Check out wireless FileHub - I use one with a 4TB HDD:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016ZWS9ZE

And Meenova uSD card reader:

http://www.meenova.com/st/p/dash_i.html

I have the Dash-i Plus. Both this and the FileHub work great with my iPad.

Hey...thanks very much! I like the Dash-i Plus. Am gonna get it! About that FileHub - do you know if i can slip in a LTE SIM data card and use it as a Mifi? I am asking because it says it has the capability of converting a wired connection into a wireless one.

The wired-wireless capability is through an Ethernet connection. I've had to us it a couple of times in places where wired was available but WiFi was not.

Hi All,

So I recently viewed the latest and greatest AD from Apple. The one with the girl saying "What's a computer". I'm not an Apple hater by any stretch but this is flat out a lie. The Ipad is a pure
entertainment device for 90% of the population, much less a computer. It's sad they
are trying to market it as a computer. It's no more a computer than an Iphone..

I think the point of the ad was that the young lady was able to do so many things with it and that from her point of view it’s the only device she’s used. No one called it a computer. It’s always called, the iPad. So from her point of view, the iPad is where she expresses her creative side. So what’s a computer from her point of view?
[doublepost=1512270474][/doublepost]
It’s not a computer in the tradional business sense as maybe an iMac or MB Pro might be used for. But a computer nevertheless, needed to power the entertainment functions. But OP has a valid perspective.

I’m still learning the iPad Pro. I just got it. The pencil is really great. I like that the battery seems to last forever, and charging it takes only the little charger adapter. With the folding keyboard and pencil the total weight is very low. It’s also always on. I have Pages and I like that a lot. The browser seems to work well. Email is good. So far I have no regrets at all. When I take a photo with my phone, the photo is automatically on the iPad. I store my documents in iCloud, which is really cheap. I added more storage for just $0.99 a month. Something else really nice about the iPad is that the software is typically very inexpensive. I like the YouTube app better than using the web page for YouTube. I take it everywhere and it’s just really simple and personal.

Except for really big tasks and some games. The iPad can do just about everything a normal computer can do so I think this commercial is not false advertisement.

I understand that, if all you do is e-mail and watch Youtube. I'm an engineer though, working for Vmware.

So is your point that if an iPad can’t accomplish everything a traditional computer can for every job in the world then it’s not a computer? Much of my work (though not all) is done via supercomputers so normal desktops and laptops would not work for me. Does that mean those aren’t computers? I mean, use a little bit of logic here. It doesn’t accomplish what you need and a traditional computer does - congratulations, you’ve successfully identified why multiple products exist.

Do you understand the diversity of jobs that exist or are you tucked away at VMWare’s campus thinking your usecase as a software engineer trump’s everyone else’s?

Each time the underlying OS is made better on the iPhone and iPad it blurs the lines between traditional computer and the tablet Apple started with. The Files app will evolve and gain more of the features found in the Finder I hope.

If I stick with Apple Pages then Files feels more advanced. If I use Microsoft’s Word then it feels pretty bad. Microsoft I think is lagging in support of the Apple way of doing things.

For 90 percent of the population, they use their “computers” for basic web surfing , email, music, movies, games, etc. So yes, the iPad is perfectly fine for most. Just because it’s not a “computer “ for you doesn’t mean it can’t be for many. I personally know multiple people who use iPads as their main computing device. We use laptops at work and iPads at home. Try a little analysis before making blanket statements.

On the subjects of facts, Apple sells more iPads every quarter than it does macs. They sold double the number of iPads compared to the Mac last quarter.

I was about to ask how many iPads are sold vs. how many Macs are sold. Does Apple break those sales down by category? How many iPad minis vs how many of the 9.7”, 10.5” and 12.9”?

How many iPads are sold in a year vs. the Mac?

Go look it up. It’s broken down. Roughly ipad sells double the units of Mac. They don’t beak down which iPad models. But I’d guess that in 2017, the mini is a very low seller.

Wondering if the low sales are just the lack of an improved model. People tend to wait I would think.

Computers can be attached to peripherals. These include printers, monitors, scanners, etc. No i'm not talking Airprint which works with 10% of printers. Computers work with external hard drives, computer's have full operating systems. Computers can run full versions of software, lightroom, photoshop, Vmware workstation. Real computers allow you to run different operating systems.

I never said the Ipad was a horrible device, wasn't capable of doing a lot of tasks, etc. It's however not a computer, it's a tablet.
I understand that, if all you do is e-mail and watch Youtube. I'm an engineer though, working for Vmware.

This could have been written by an engineer working for Sun or DEC in the early 1980s. All you'd have to do is substitute "PC" for "iPad." At that point (and well into the '90s), there were engineers who called PCs "toys." They had their 32-bit minicomputers (back when PCs were running on 8-bit and 16-bit systems), running Unix or something like it, and nothing less than what they had sitting on (or beside) their desk qualified as a "computer." Of course, those "toys" totally consumed Sun's and DEC's business.

Now we hear the same whining from PC users about mobile devices. Get a clue. It's too late to close computing's "borders" to these upstart immigrants. Yelling at them to "talk C++," or insinuating that they must have Intel Inside to be socially acceptable isn't going to hold back the tide.

This attitude is as absurd as someone claiming all motor vehicles must have four wheels, an enclosed passenger compartment, and a place to store luggage. Motorcycles or Caterpillar tractors, by that definition, would not be motor vehicles at all. Certainly an engineer should understand that peripherals like printers and external HDs are just that; peripheral to the core capabilities of a computer. Further, while being multi-lingual is certainly advantageous, it's not a fundamental requirement in either life or computing.

What do you think most people use their computers for that can’t be done on an iPad?

Audio and Video Editing
Coding (github/subversion)
External monitors
Virtualization (running different OS)
Photo editing
External devices
Ethernet Requirement at some locations (corporate settings)
External video ports
Sd card slots
USB
Full application versions
Screen hinges
Docking stations
Applications not on the App Store/unavailable.
Printers that don't support AirPrint (like at work)

I could go on for days.. I'm not stating iPad's are not useful, but it's far from a personal computer. Great for Grandma, but not for corporate users and those in the technical arena.

I didn’t ask what you did. I asked about most people. And if you think even 5% of people do video editing, audio editing, or coding?

It’s obvious this is just another iPad bash thread.

Umm.. I think external monitors are pretty popular, as well as a lot of people work in corporate settings where an iPad wouldn't make the cut. I work in an office of 800 plus people, I haven't seen one person who solely uses an iPad.

Tell the accounting staff to use iPad's for excel... no way..

I really thought we were talking about most people. And you’re bringing up coders not being able to do their job on it, video and audio editors, and now accountants and people at your workplace.

But fine. Let’s play this game. The newest MacBook Pro is not a computer.

No SD card slot
Can’t hook up to most monitors
No Ethernet port
USB C means you can’t hook up your peripherals and good luck with that printer

Huh?

I'm using a 28 inch 4k monitor with a MacBook Pro right now.
I'm using Ethernet with my MacBook Pro right now
I print to both my office and home printer with no issues.

Corporate america uses computers bro, not iPad's.. That's hardly a small percentage of the population.

At least it can play YouTube in the background. :D

Ah, so you bought how many of those dongles?

I could go on for days..

Please don't. You have yet to make a point and have only shared what does not work for you.

Audio and Video Editing
I can edit video and audio with my iPad Pro

Coding (github/subversion)
Don't have a need for this so this does not apply.

External monitors
I use my iPad an an external monitor all the time.

Virtualization (running different OS)
Don't have a need for this so this does not apply.

Photo editing
I edit photos all day long on my iPad pro

External devices
I can connect to external devices with my iPad pro

Ethernet Requirement at some locations (corporate settings)
I can connect to Ethernet with my iPad Pro

External video ports
Don't have a need for this so this does not apply.

Sd card slots
I can use SD cards with my iPad Pro quite easily.

USB
My iPad can do USB 3.0

Full application versions
No need for full versions when the APP counterpart can create just as well

Screen hinges
Why would the iPad need this? If it's important there are plenty of keyboard combinations that will give you a laptop set up with the iPad.

Docking stations
I can dock my iPad Pro

Applications not on the App Store/unavailable.
Irrelevant

Printers that don't support AirPrint (like at work)
Use a wireless bridge

Seriously, have you ever used an iPad? I am having a hard time believing that you own one.
