Ok, I got the MBA back today. The screen is a lot tighter. There is some minor, minor give when you push on the top of the screen at 90 degrees. But from what I have seen most laptops do that.
It looks like they changed the top case where the keyboard sits on. The top cover that encases the screen has not been changed so I am assuming the hinges rested on bottom panel.
This is the list of the items replaced:

Antenna - Enclosure - defective latch/hinge
Magnet - Enclosure - defective latch/hinge
Bezel - Enclosure - defective latch/hinge
Top Case - No Mouse/Trackpad Response
Clutch - Enclosure - defective latch/hinge
Clutch - Enclosure - defective latch/hinge

So far it works well. I am quite happy that Apple finally 'fessed up and stood by their product. I am sure the pressure from the legal community also had something to do with it.

Overall, I am quite happy with the repair.
Thanks

My hinge broke three days back and it looks exactly like this:
mba-broken-hinge-1.jpg

I took it to AppleStore and they said it is not covered as it has two dents. There is a small peck of a dent on the lid happened a year back and a tiny bend in the lower bottom corner of the screen closer to the broken side of the hinge(LHS one).
Apple tells me these two accidents voids any warranty and AppleCare. I tried telling them that the bend would have happened around six months, and this hinge thing just happened three days back when I was opening the MBA, but to no avail.

Is there any way I can convince them?

Thx

The good side of the grass.
^^^ BASTAADS!! I'd try another Apple Store or just send it in to Applecare. Depending on which ****** who you talk to at the store can make a world of difference. Some stink more than others. I've taken things to one store and no way Apple is covering it, take it to another and fixed without question or issue.

Sorry to hear that my aholes must have moved to your store.:p

any pictures of the dents you're talking about? I have a tiny dent on my lid but due to something poking at it while in my backpack.

Go to another store and give it a shot. Better yet, send in your girlfriend!

Call Applecare. Take pictures of your MBA and what the dents they claim caused the hinge to break - then kindly asked them how two tiny dents can cause your hinge to fail and break off.

I definitely agree. My wife gets treated like a Queen at Apple stores. Meanwhile, the one who spends the money, ME THE DUMB SUCKER, gets treated like crap to those arrogant, obnoxious, holier than thou mighty "geniuses."

Send in a woman (girlfriend, wife, mom, mistress - it doesn't matter), and I believe your problems will be covered.

Finally, Peace of mind!

My Rev A MBA has been wonderful, with very little play in the screen... but the other day I noticed a slight clicking noise when the hinges change direction. it's good to know that if it ever does become a larger issue, apple has it covered. Brilliant!

Unfortunately it's right next to the broken hinge on the display corner. That's a rough one. I can see why Apple will give you grief on that.

Yeah, it makes it seem as though the hinge broken when something was closed in the display. Dont give up, but understand their position and why they might not believe you.

About time! Holy crap.. they finally see the poor design flaw for what it is. At least they will replace the failed ones, and hopefully redesign the MBA to have a much better hinge.

Maybe once they start to get enough of their netbooks back they will make a machine worth paying a premium for.

Guys, great news!!! As per your suggestions over the weekend we went to a different Apple Store at the Garden Plaza mall at Paramus and sent my wife instead.
The Apple Genius guy looked at it mentioned this is a known issue and not to worry about it and will get it fixed soon. I got the call today morning that its all fixed and just came back with a new/refurbished display attached to the laptop with a tight hinge :)

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions!!!!

The good side of the grass.
Great success!!

So VS007, the whole dent got fixed too which is a double win. Glad to see it.

I think I'm going to take my Rev.B in this week. Even though it's not broke broke yet, still gotten way sloppy and will close itself from about a 45º angle and flops around when typing. The hinge is the reason I bought the only Applecare ever in 22 years of owning Apple products.

It sucks that things like this are not so black and white. My wife is a technical moron but I guess I could send my 16 year old daughter in to sweet talk them. I always seem to get in a bit of a pissing contest and often argue with myself if no one else is around.

Any hinge/display repairs have resulted in a non-lined MBA display coming back with lines? I wonder if they can do something about my battery too that's only reading 87% capacity.

Glad to hear it! I still have a Rev A here as a backup machine. My girlfriend really just uses it in her lab and for conferences so it doesnt get much wear and tear. However I am sure the hinge will go eventually, and it is nice to know that when it does we can have it fixed right up!

That's awesome to hear. Mine is still being repaired right now, they had to send it off to a service center.

Well I was playing with my Air and trying to decide how floppity my diplay really was and, bam - double jointed! I'm really debating if I want to take it in since I kind of really like this feature:

Well my MBA went back for repair yesterday. I asked if they could just tighten the hinge and leave the extra feature but it appears a no go. There were no questions asked about repair when I showed the Genius how loose it was, I didn't even have to really show him the opening angle. The first Genius I've encountered who was actually knowledgeable. Wanted to see performance of my MBP's X25 G2 and genuinely liked the optibayed 500GB drive.

Here's to hoping I get it back with no dents, scratches, KFC crumbs or a crappy display.

Horrible luck. Try another store. My hinge died 6 months ago, applecare died 7 months ago.

It has a small dent. It has the power button missing and I open the laptop twice to re do the thermal paste and remove the hinges. I even left super glue residue on one of the hinges.

Guess what? It coming tomorrow and I turned it in tuesday. :D

Actually I did try at other store. Thanks to my wife I am enjoying my maccu(pet name for my MBA)on my lap with a tight hinge.
Never realized what I was missing with a wobbly display even before the hinge gave up.
Now surfing is fun.

PS: You dont realize the beauty of MBA until you are forced to surf on a IBM brick laptop. :D

Are you guys saying that the hinge will definitely break no matter how much care I take of my baby MBA?

NC MacGuy, let us know how it goes regarding the lines :D
