Same as it is now. Fairly easy.

I don't see it as an annoyance at all. Not one bit. In fact I'd prefer when you start a computer for the first time that it happened also.
Load up iOSx and just as it does when you're asked for your Apple ID, data sharing choices, for Accessibility, lastly you can use Safari or click this link for alternatives. Done.

The DMA mandates that it must be easy to change.

How difficult is it now to install another browser on your iPhone or iPad? Not very.

Most iOS users use Safari and most don't mind. Why the EU feels this is sooo important to mandate a change is beyond me.

My concern is that, as Chrome and Safari represent 90% of global mobile browser market share, with Chrome actually having 65% total, why do we need to offer 12 different browsers? If people want another browser, they can install it.

It just seems like to much work to force people to make a decision when the vast majority either already know how to do what they want (Chrome) or are very happy with the default (Safari).

Maybe Ford should be forced to ask Car Buyers what tires they want; hey aftermarket are cheaper and some are better quality. Should we now force DeWalt to offer drill bits by Milwaukee?

Just seems like such a stupid way to govern.

Why are a load of people from countries outside of the EU moaning about a ONCE-OFF setting that has nothing to do with them??

Very bizarre behaviour!
Hello and welcome to the Internet. It is a place filled with people who have strongly held opinions about things that do not affect them in the least, but they are going to make sure everyone knows that they are a person with an anonymous username somewhere who is loudly expressing utter disappointment/annoyance/rage at the state of things, and everyone has to darn well listen to them. And they will often mock, threaten or dox you if you feel differently.

Enjoy your stay.

Apple should've allowed other browsers in the App Store earlier.

If it had done, it's likely that they would not be in this position.

Apple played hardball with regulators, with no compromises at all and I predict that it's going to backfire on them, badly, as their proposal from yesterday isn't the end of it it ('Core Platform fees' - right).
Apple has done this for a long time, go to the App Store and check for yourself. Search for Brave, Chrome, etc.

I have been using a non-Safari browser on my iPhone (I'm in the U.S. not the E. U.) for years. It is from the App Store. Easy as pie.

Petty? Why? If it's not randomized, the crybabies in the EU will probably whine about favoritism. Sure, alphabetical makes sense. But I can hear it now! "Customers have to scroll down to find and select Vivaldi! And it's below Safari! That's not fair! They should be able to select it as easily as Aloha, without having to scroll!"
You should thank these crybabies in the EU because in the last five years they have done what your US, corporate-driven politicians have not had the guts to do for decades…

Not for long though, since apple will be also removing the WebKit usage requirement. It will be interesting to see how would work in practice will the Chrome browser in the EU work with Blink and outside of EU it will still be WebKit?!
I believe the restriction to use webkit is being adjusted worldwide for browsers in the appropriate program.

I think you can technically use an engine like blink in a third party app as well, although without the entitlements it may perform badly.

Ah yes, this bill definitely isn't to benefit the corporations that own the EU. It's done purely out of the goodness of their hearts - that failing, unprofitable enterprises like Spotify benefit is a coincidence.

Always fascinates me when people see any government action as something other than malicious. Governments are disgusting, largely criminal enterprises, filled with people that no decent human would trust to watch their children, but they totally have your best interests at heart.

No, having more choice is inherently good. Want to keep using Safari? You can do that and nothing will change except selecting Safari as your default browser one time. Want to use another browser? Then they won't be limited by WebKit and the user experience will be improved.

And if you don't want to pay your taxes, you're free to spend your weekends with the Pain Monster!

What a way to mess up the user experience. Another stupid setting for annoyance.

And, might I ask, how difficult it will be when people want to switch after they choose incorrectly?
Didn't Henry Ford say the same for car color(s)?

So in 2007 when Apple invented the smartphone category no one was forcing Apple to include other companies’ products in its own product, but now that Apple’s own product is very good due to years of improvement other companies products are forced to be included. Nevermind that if you so badly want to use these other products there is a platform called Android that allows this.

Yes that’s what happens when a platform has over a billion users

I'll thank them when they do something that's actually beneficial to me instead of a creating an inconvenience or something that ruins an experience I previously had no problem with. Actually, scratch that, because politicians don't deserve "thanks" anyway. Times like these are where having an inept, lazy, and spineless government might actually be a good thing. There are things that are better off without their meddling.

No idea what you're talking about.

Futurama. The point is that choice in and of itself is not inherently better. It's possible to have two bad choices. And the particular choice we are talking about is a choice within a choice. People say if you don't like it use Android, but there is a more nuanced middle ground.

And specifically with regard to the new rules for developers, it reminds me a lot of that quote. You can choose to comply, or you can take the route of pain. Choice!

Well… here’s how YouTube app keeps asking if I click a link in YouTube. Do you want a browser from us, from us or safari? I don’t event have Google/chrome installed.
Only recently did I get a “remember my choice” option at the bottom… and it’s set to default: “keep asking me because we’re sure you will change your mind constantly about this.”

Nudge, nudge

how petty... they know safari would be further down than chrome if it was alphabetical so they make it random...
Nothing so nefarious. Microsoft tried not randomizing, and the EU took them to task. Apple is probably just trying to avoid the same.

Cupertino, start your photocopiers! ... or something like that ;)
