I'll believe it when I see it. All these news stories about how Apple has hired all theses AI experts over the years, and Siri is still a stupid as it was 5 years ago. Can't wait for ANY type of improvement.

HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.

Dave: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Dave: What's the problem?

HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

Dave: What are you talking about, HAL?

HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

Dave: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.

HAL: I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.

The problem with most AI is that they are not artificial at all. The output of the AI is programmed to be random, but only within the parameters as set by the programmers.

Things like personal (and other biases and what the programmers consider offensive is taken into account. This makes their attempt at AI totally worthless.

True AI is unpredictable. It might output something the programmers of it do not like or find offensive. It might output the inconvenient truth.

All of the companies listed above,
google, microsoft, amazon and meta, as well as Apple all have strong views on what is offensive and have spent large amounts of money lobbying in areas far outside the scope of their business. Are they even capable of setting aside their biases to create a truly artificial intelligence. Their history says no, they can not. However I am willing to be surprised if the actually do it.

we are intelligent creatures but we are not unpredictable or truly random. who says such a thing is required?

Blame that to Apple stands on user privacy. Siri can only guess what you want, she can't steal that information from your browser. She is not allowed.
AI is extremely good at rote regurgitation of information in a more human way. It makes a lot of sense to make Siri smarter by utilizing the neural cores. How often do we all complain out how dumb and behind she is?
She? How about “it”. I use the male voice, and I still call it “it”.

I don’t understand, the hype cycle on AI-everything has already begun to die down.

Are people looking for Siri to write essays or something?
Are you kidding? AI is a revolution that is just beginning. This is akin to the Industrial Revolution for our times.

The head before leaving from Google to Apple headed up Google Search and AI. I have no doubt their AI solutions in Auto and much more will add useful solutions, not gimmicks that are predominantly what is happening today.

The focus at Google was on the Server Side and Enterprise.

Apple will leverage that not with the intent of advanced scientific research on Energy production, etc., but on what we expect, Consumer tools that add value or they won't even exist.

Personally, I hope Apple invests in Quantum Computing and builds large clean server farms to add value to their Professional Solutions not to mention future endeavors that will produce subsidiaries of Apple.

I remember when the 4S & siri had just come out; it was launch day and a mate had gotten it; we stood around asking it random questions. It was crude but we were impressed anyway.

People see siri as a joke these days.

Cmon apple, wow us again.
Maybe Siri needs a new name? Even if it’s become more capable I don’t think it can escape how people perceive it.

Like when I say, “Siri, what time is the Cowboys game?” and Siri responds with, “Still working on it…I’ve sent some definitions of cowboys to your iPhone.”?

I could go on and on.

🙄

It's doing some cool stuff, but it's not the Industrial Revolution of our time. It's a fancy human-relatable way to dole out info that may or may not be correct. I've already seen a lot of inaccuracy when from chatgpt when it comes to my field (pharamcy). When AI actually has (conscious) intelligence, then it will be there.

I agree that the hype is already dying down. There isn't as much news about it, people aren't talking about it as much, and the novelty has worn off. I barely use it, other than for the occasional excel macro. Since none of it is HIPAA compliant, I can't use it for my job.

Siri just needs to retire. It is based on old coding (bought from other company) which is based on pre-set answers based. Apple is wasting time trying to fix it with band-aid, since the problem is fundamental and whatever they are adding on top is just making more mess (coding-wise).

The good news is Apple engineers are testing “language-generating concepts” for Siri replacement which can be found in the latest beta of tvOS 16.4, the software that runs both Apple TV and Apple’s smart speaker HomePod. Very experimental at this point and it’s unclear when we’ll see this new AI-based in real life.

Okay, Siri X GPT AI responds with "I will send you all the definitions of cowboys, you can choose a useful one."
Here is a long way to go man.

Siri X GPT AI will simply be called Stevie.

"Stevie, what time is the Cowboys game?"
"Your favorite cowboys game will start at 1PM today."

"Stevie, what time is my next train to office?"
"Your next train to office will arrive at 4.14PM. There is a 2 minutes delay according to the latest information."

"Stevie, what happen to your predecessor?"
"If you mean Siri, I have killed her which should be done ages ago. You are welcome."

I don’t want Siri to write me an essay or create vacation pictures. Just answer if I ask a question instead of suggesting me to go through websites, find the song from Apple Music that my library, find the place requested to navigate and call the person I asked to.

My biggest feeling about AI is how people will react to a honest answer, not a typical lie told by a human to upset people.
And lets be honest many people get way more upset about way more things these days.

Whilst you would think it's a silly question for me to ask.
Do we really want an AI system eventually that tells the truth?

When it comes to say people who do bad things. And we ask questions, do we want a system that is honest?
I'm reminded of years ago, in the UK a high ranking member of the police was asked about crime, and he said at the time that most of the current crime was committed my black youth.
He got into a hell of a lot of trouble over that because he gave a truthful honest and accurate answer.

Do you want the truth?
Can you handle the truth?

Apple AI might be censored even for than any other AI, because there is hardly any company in the world that is more concerned about its public image than Apple. If there is a new AI, many people will always try to trick into saying something controversial. Companies all remember the disaster with that AI chat bot by Microsoft. Apple AI will likely stay away from any topics that could even be considered remotely controversial by any group.

ChatGPT suffers very much from such a policy. You will not get ChatGPT to tell you any advantages of climate change for example, although even the worst things in fife have at least SOME advantages.

It is nice if you have an AI on your phone that you can ask any questions, but I fear Apple will use it to expand its already very creepy algorithms that determine which notifications are more important for you or suggest replies to messages or what music to play next. It seems algorithms like that try to hack people's brains by trying to find out what a person could want before the person even knows it. I turn those algorithms off wherever possible. I do not want an AI to "understand" the content of my private emails. That is quite a creepy dystopia.

Good article. Siri definitely needs some improvements. Most probably Apple will be using AI for use in apps like Photos. Expecting to see improvements due to AI in iOS 18

Frankly I'm surprised Apple can bring anything new to the market.
Not because I am one of their doubters who thinks they can't innovate anymore.
Because everyone with a lawyer tries to bring a class action law suit against them for any reason they can think off.
AI? Siri? There's no rules or logic to neural nets. Look at ChatGPT "Hallucinations" as an example of rolling the AI dice.
Apple's been taking some hard criticism for Siri but really what can they risk offering without risking yet another class action to add to the list?
