In fact, in some respects we are quite close to this vision. I use ChatGPT-4 (the gap between 3.5 and 4 is huge) and it is a perfect assistant even at work - not a replacement, but an assistant. If OpenAI adds (partly already exists) full voice support with voice responses and improves Dall-E to match MidJourney or Adobe Firefly 2, we will be in a very similar place. Unfortunately, we will not receive an answer about consciousness for a long time. We still have much to discover here, and there are many paths. There will probably even be defenders of Cartesian dualism, material monism, pansychism, although functionalists dominate, and we can mention several other trends in consciousness research, but none of them has given us the right answer. At the level of fortune telling with "Her", we will have more failures than we think, we should rather count this time in months rather than decades.Whoever nails the AI assistant race - I mean really nails it - will lead in hardware, IoT, and [name] store for many many consumers.
Generative AI has its uses, undoubtedly, but a virtual assistant that can understand multiple commands, context of requests, and even anticipate needs on a near human level?! Sign me up.
Watch the movie “Her” and take away all the emotive and self-aware parts (basically keep the first bit of the movie), and you’ll see the ideas which are theoretically/realistically possible; maybe not soon, but the speed at which we’re approaching it is ever-increasing.
I hope it’s Apple - ‘cause I like their hardware and (mostly) polished software - but I’ll jump ship in a heartbeat if someone else makes that breakthrough.
[well, maybe not a heartbeat]
