The $200 jump is more like a 33% increase than 20%. The thing here is the Air 4 itself has gotten very close to iPad Pro territory. There's much fewer reasons to pay the extra $200 now than there was the $300 for Air 3 to Pro.

I agree about the $500 threshold though.
True, thanks for the correction. Fixed me post above.

I think the $200 extra is still easily worth it. For that, you get a slightly better screen, double the storage, FaceID, and better cameras. That’s a lot of extras (esp compared to Macbooks where $200 barely buys a RAM upgrade usually, hah). And since we’re already north of $500, the extra outlay is not as significant.

I am pi**ed off! Apple just introduced Apple Air that is more powerful than my iPad Pro 2020. Really cannot understand this. They should include Bionic A14 is iPad Pro. What are your thoughts?
A12Z is an has an 8 Core CPU (4 Performance + 4 Efficiency) and an 8 Core GPU vs a 6 Core CPU (2 Performance + 4 Efficiency) and a 4 Core GPU. The A12Z will still outperform the A14. The A14 may have a higher single core speed but that's likely it.

Also an aside, but this is exactly why I didn't try to "future proof" my iPad Pro 11" by going 2020 / 6GB RAM or whatever and instead went for a refurb'd 2018. The iPad Pro is in for some big transitional leaps and this revision makes it more clear than ever. Apple is going to try their hardest to make us want to upgrade, and there are more opportunities to do that than I can count right now.

So with the 11” Pro (£769 base) vs iPad Air (£579), what does an extra £190 get you.

-Slightly larger screen
-Face ID
-Quad Speakers (not Dual)
-120Hz Promotion Display
-Double the storage
-Better cameras
-Better microphones
-Thinner device
-Brighter screen
-LiDAR
-Probably similar chip performance A14/A12Z (the A12Z will likely be better for multi-tasking)

Anyone who has the 11” Pro right now, just think you have enjoyed that device for however long you have had it already, and everything is better about it over the new air except that the air will perform a bit better at doing single tasks, but your pro will perform a lot better at multitasking.

IMO, the extra £190 currently for the PRO vs the AIR is still worth it, and a refurb 2018 pro will bring you even better value over the current AIR...

PLUS, let’s be honest here, not many people who purchase the AIR at £579 are going to splash out over half of that on the magic keyboard and get the full experience of their iPad.

I was thinking the same. If someone buy Air model, they will probably not spěje so much on keyboard..

Just bought a 2020 11 pro. Man, I'm so pissed. 1200 euros vs this thing. I think I'm done with them.
I wouldn’t be upset. To me, the release of the Air shows how much more value you get with the Pro. Double the base storage, more RAM (I’m guessing), better cameras, ProMotion, FaceID, better gpu — all for not much more than the Air. I wouldn’t be concerned with processor performance between the two. The stats they gave were comparing to the previous Air processor.

I was holding off to see what they would release, but I’ll probably go with a Pro.

Personally, not for me. I'd rather have a 256GB Air 4 than a 128GB 2020 Pro 11 for around the same price.

Although if one is lucky enought to find it in stock, the refurb 2018 iPad Pro 11 offers better value than both.

Yeah, I think the iPad Pro and iPad Air RAM will be 6 GB and 4 GB respectively, and I think the iPhones will be the same. The Pros and non-Pros will get 6 GB and 4 GB respectively.

Rounded screen corners are the worst!!! Freaking marketing overtaking functionality. I probably would've bought this if it weren't for the round screen corners. Goddammit apple, just make a full size screen. No cut off rounded corners, no cut out for a notch, just a normal maximum-functionality rectangular screen. Dammit.

You do not not get the point. We buy iPad Pro because we expect for the price highend product and most advanced technology. Rumours said there will be new iPad Pro with Bionic A14 and miniled display in fall - not cheap iPad Air. I was waiting for new iPad Pro two years. I was waiting mostly because I expected more powerful chip and after 2 years there came nothing special. And now they put it into lower model. I could just wait for iPad Air and save money. They are just laughing to the paying customers.

I still do not understand why we have LiDAR when there is no technology or software for it. I happy they surprise us with better AR with iPhonu introduction.

At the time it was the best. But just like anything in tech, it gets outdated. The iPhone 12 will likely have a better processor than the iPad Pros. Next year they will likely release a Pro with the A14X outpowering the iPad Air and iPhones. Its just the way things work. You can probably still sell your pro and buy an Air if thats what you want to do. But getting mad about it wont change anything.

I personally never used anything AR and thus disqualified the 2020 model as a reason to upgrade. Don’t simply jump on the new releases because they are “faster” or more powerful. But rather this offers something I want/need that will have some practical use. Even if you chose to upgrade to the air, youd have a faster processor, but you lose FaceID. To me that is a big plus as signing in has become easier than ever (on my iPad) the same cant be said for my phone however...

It's not more powerful than iPad Pro 2020.
It should be... CPU is a given as it's two generations newer, but with 2x the graphics performance of the A12 I think it's going to be closer than you might think to the A12Z on that metric as well!

A14 CPU will likely still be slower than A12Z for multi-core.

And yes, while I agree A14 will get close, "close" is not the same thing as "more powerful". Plus the 2020 iPad Pro has 6 GB RAM.

6 GB is more future proof than higher CPU speed so 2020 Pro will last a while. Even my 1st gen 12.9" and 10.5" Pros are still doing well aside from the battery life.

This is a great product - I'm sure Apple will sell tons. I'm waiting patiently for these features to make it down to a new mini/promini?.

I like the smaller form factor that much.

Absolutely right. I too am waiting to see a Mini with the same design as the new iPad Air. That will be perfection as a portable sketchpad and book reader.

Reckon it'll be similar to A12 vs A10X.

A14 wins single core, more or less comparable for multi-core and A12Z wins GPU.

I don't game or do video editing so I tend to prefer non-X/Z chipsets for the power savings.

I purchased my 11” 2020 iPP July 18th. No regrets. It‘s inevitable they will keep making faster iPads. This machine still outshines the new air with all the given extras. It just means early next year a new 2021 iPP will debut and that one will really outshine the 2020. Thats when you get pissed. 😂

I love how most people on here are just assuming the A14 bionic will beat out the A12Z at everything. As a few have pointed out, the A12Z will likely still be a better performer in many areas. PLUS, the A12Z is a beast at running all apps available at the moment. What exactly are you complaining about?

I just got a Pro not too long ago myself. Although in my case it’s the 12.9” version, so I would not have jumped for the Air anyway. If I were buying now and needed something with a smaller screen, I’d probably still get the 11” Pro.

Yep, me too. I have a 2020 iPP 11", but a Mini Pro would be perfect.

What I understand is:

A12z has more ram, 6gb vs 4gb (Most likely)
A12z also has more gpu cores. 6 vs 4.
same 6 core cpu.

Wrong

A12 CPU and GPU have 8 cores each, not 6

The A14 may have a higher single core speed but that's likely it.

Not may. It 100% will

Don’t forget A13 Bionic has faster single core speed than A12X/Z by around 150-200ish points (it varies but yeah)

The Pro 2020 does remind me of the new iPad (the iPad 3 lol) but at least Apple won’t stuff up the performance of the Pro 2020 compared to the iPad 3 when even the iPad 2 in areas was better than the 3 (it was lucky it had no Retina display) that and the CPU/Screen Res, the millions of pixels on the screen on the A12X/Z they can handle, unlike the iPad 3

Plus when the A6X came out it fixed the A5X’s problems of its performance on a same retina display of the 4th gen, there is no problem with the performance of the A12Z plus i believe it could be just as capable of handling iPadOS updates compared to the A5X *cough iOS 8*

Bought the Gen 3 back when the shutdown started for my wife and I and let the kids use our 2018 regular model — kind of wish I had waited now after seeing this beauty Gen 4 Air.

Future is bright with that processing power!
