Currently yes. But as the technology progresses I bet a few voicemails that the person left would be enough to recreate their voice.
Already happening.

It would be nice to have the ability to have the voice say anything you want.
For instance you record a grandparents voice that's gone after a grandchild is born. The grandchild could hear her grandmothers voice saying whatever you want.
What do you think is the purpose of the phrase Rest in Peace?

iPhone is everything but a phone now…
Bluetooth calling does not work in cars, impossible to edit a mytyped number in the dial pad, etc. the worst phone app ever, even worse than Windows phone. Everything else is acceptable.

This would have been perfect for me about 30 years ago. I had to have neck surgery to remove a tumor and one of the possible outcomes could be that I lose my voice. Unfortunately, that’s what happened. I went for an entire year without my voice as they waited to see if the nerves might recover. When they did not, I had another surgery to restore most of my vocal functionality, which has worked well for me. I have my voice again, though it sounds rather hoarse most of the time.

If I would’ve had this technology to recreate my voice for me on demand, that one year period would have been much better and much easier to deal with.

Carry on, Apple! You’re doing great things!

That's exactly what I thought. That could be a powerful thing to hand down to the next generation. I never got to meet either of my Grandfathers, never heard their voices since they passed before video was widespread (1970's for both). I would love it if something like this was available with their voices.

You can have the voice say anything you want.

Does anyone know of a service like this that allows you to preserve an aging family member or loved ones voice?
Firstly I’m not sure why you don’t use your iPhone? You can add up to 3 voices so you can do your own voice and both your parents?… But, I’ve looked into this quite a bit and there are a few services. I’d love to create a virtual avatar that has my voice, it would be cool, anyway I’ve found Mindbankai to be interesting.

The number one reason for not using this iPhone is because the voice is locked to your Apple ID. Even your legacy contact cannot access it according to Apple.

That’s…creepy. And why would that person care about hearing the voices of people they never knew?
Why wouldn't you? You don't think it would be cool to hear the voice of a relative you never knew? Just image if we could her George Washington or some other significant person from the past.

I'd only be interested if I could mimic Morgan Freeman's or Jame Earl Jones' voice.😎

Why would I want my own voice‽
I mean... I just listened to Freddie Mercury sing "Don't Stop Believin'" on YouTube for exactly this reason.

I so clearly see the use case for this, and since the next version of iOS is rumored to be AI-heavy, it makes perfect sense.

And, I'll be incredibly curious to see what ethical debates arise and how Apple tackles them.

The assistive technology edge case of people losing their voice seems specious -I'm getting trojan horse vibes. This AI could be able to impersonate you, either when doing language translation or for some other task like reading aloud text messages or emails you send. This will probably further cement users into apples ecosystem creating the next generation of blue bubble vs green bubble or used to train the next gen of voice recognition.

Right. But with the samplings of all of the iPhone users who use that feature, it won't take long for the AI is able to match it perfectly.
But it is on device work, not on Apple's servers unlike when Google used Google voice on their servers and used that to create excellent speech recognition. Privacy and all that has a down side. I don't care if Google knows what I sound like, I'm not super paranoid.

So many people thinking of the negatives, or something that doesn’t suit them. How about for those people who will use this to enhance their own lives in a personal way?

With every good thing technology does, there are bad ways to use that technology. Does that mean we shouldn’t be developing voice or images, video or whatever!

How is it specious? How is it actually wrong? Just because there is potential for someone else to develop AI speech doesn’t mean it is wrong to use it in scenarios like the one depicted in the video. I guarantee Apple thought about security when doing this, whereas Google, Microsoft couldn’t care less about security.

Has Apple given any indication what information is being sent to their servers as a result of using this feature? It doesn't have to be actual audio recordings for the information to be helpful in refining the AI model.

It was a potential side effect (improving DeepFake-like AI) that I considered and not caused by any paranoia.
