SSD, blueray and a better graphics card.. SSD should have been offered as a BTO already.. :(

I would like to see the following on the next family of iMacs (wishful thinking most likely.)

- user replaceable hard drive with no vendor lock in
- SATA 6.0Gbps and eSATA 6.0Gbps
- bring back jumbo frames for the P55 NIC (1500MTU max makes me sad)
- USB 3.0, >=5 ports, and slightly wider spaced as well
- if there's no Firewire 1600, then 2 Firewire 800 ports, or 1 Firewire 800 + 1 Firewire 400 even
- return of a front LED for system power (why did they take this off from the white Intels, even if it's tiny that'd suffice)
- option for an SSD drive + boot drive
- Radeon 58xx Mobility or nVidia 200m series graphics
- SDXC support for card reader
- proper Mini Displayport/HDMI in (ie. not needing to have the computer up and running to do so)
- MiniDisplayport/HDMI In and Out
- Blu-Ray drive (even if it's just a combo drive [BD read, DVD write,] I don't see BD burning as a big deal)
- possibly thicker design (thinner isn't always better, I'm finding on the i7 I have that if you do anything remotely CPU intensive, the power supply scorches at around 80c, this would allow for better cooling via more heatpipes/more fans, and allow for more devices internally
- option to remove speakers for better cooling and more devices (I'll keep dreaming, even though removing them would allow for bigger heatpipes or even a 2nd hard drive)

I'm one of those who can't stand the built in speakers on the iMacs. They are craptastic. I don't expect much for 'free' speakers, but I'm one of those who finds that those speakers are a lot of wasted space for something that could be doing more (another HD, more cooling for the CPU or GPU, another quiet fan, etc.)

I'm Very happy with my Late 2009 3.06 base iMac

I'm Very Happy with my Late 2009 base 3.06 iMac and the nvidia 9400M.

The value for the money is Excellent. :D

Sure the compenents could be faster but I can do Everything that I want and Need to do with the iMac JUST As IT IS, so why pay more if I don't need it?

I upgraded my Modem and Router, and now have a super fast internet connection ( ave. download speeds over 43 mb/s)... which make most of what i do seem Very Fast.

i am enjoying my 21.5" i mac as well

the changes i think it will be in 21.5"

  • dual core i5 3.06Ghz

  • better and newer graphic cards

other than that everything will be same, performance may be increased by 10 to 15% because of the dual core i5s

WWDC 2010 will be right time frame for next iMac upgrade but apple might do a march upgrade as well since dual core i5s will be out by January 2010

Some variant of the ATI 58xx series. The 4850 is old. I know, I know.... if you wanna play games, get a PC. But I need the iMac anyway, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

If they could somehow, magically, fit a 5850 in the 27", I would fall in love.

Top 5 Suggested Improvements

5. Keyboard with MBP type touch pad for gesturing
4. SSD BTO Option
3. Better GPU (5000 Series or otherwise)
2. Blu Ray Burner

and most importantly

1. More effective QC before release so you can buy one without a high likelihood of a defective blinking and/or uneven yellow screen or other issues

I'm loving my iMac 27inch Quad Core i5 everything is super fast no freezing or crashing or waiting.

Some things however i want
-Blu-Ray drive (would not mind paying extra $200 for it)
-More ports 6 USB 3 FireWire and inclusion of HDMI cable.
-Sounds small but include a Apple Mouse Pad so i have a matching pad to go with my magic mouse.
-Sounds like a few years out but perhaps starting to put multi touch technology into the beautiful display the imac has.

Mobile version of ATI 58xx is likely, but don't count on desktop version. If ATI follows the same line, mobile version will be just underclocked desktop version so performance will remain excellent

Quick question, I should be recieving my i7 27" with 8gb ram next week,

and well my question is, if I were to sell it by the time the new Imacs are out, (say march maybe) what do you u think the resale would be? Do they hold their value? AU$ 2889 is what I paid brand new through apple what is a rough figure for a resale?
As i never owned a mac i'm curious to know this? Cause if u lose out on a few hundred it works out well, cause basically your just paying the difference which may be a few hundred more.

It depends on what comes out. If quad core's price drop significantly, your iMac's price will drop too. If updated quad core is 2400AUS you might get ~2200AUS from yours

Hey champ, thanks for the reply! So basically resale is pretty good? I'm assuming that's what most ppl do yeah? New one comes out, they sell theirs for a loss of a few hundred the., add a extra $300-400 and u have yourself the newer iMac?

Yes, that's very common, especially if the update is major. Macs' resale value have always been great compared to PCs. Of course, if the update is just minor, you should think is it worth the hassle and couple of hundreds.

Well if it's a minor update I won't bother till there is a major one. I think apple really only do 1 big update a year? Or am I mistaken?

IMO, the last update was the only "big" update since the transition to Core 2 Duos. Because the last update was so major, I doubt we'll see another major one for a year or so, just new GPUs and CPUs

I think it's just a matter of supply. I tend to think Apple may have gone with the 58XX if they could have gotten their hands on it.

Hey

Baah, was about to buy a iMac in january, but guess i shuld wait now when they might release new versions in febuary... baah :D

Personally, I'd love to see some new GPUs in there around march-April. Then I could sell my Macbook Pro and treat myself to a nice iMac/iPad combo come graduation :)

I think this is what we'll see and the timing also seems logical. ATI has released Mobile Radeon 5000 series which is very powerful and nVidia also released the "new" (just renamed 200M series) GeForce 300M series. Maybe Clarkdales will replace Core 2 Duos in some models as well.

Graphics Card Not Chip

Graphics card (upgradable). Not a graphics chip soldered to the motherboard.

Apple would never allow the expandability to go beyond the RAM of HDD - this would compromise Mac Pro sales. Plus the iMac gets away with being so slim because its not design to be expandable.

In the next update, all I can see are i5's and new graphics chipsets.
