Apple seem to be the only company that hold/fix the retail price for nearly a year though. The Galaxy Note 9 was £1k when it was released a couple of months back but it’s already available for around £730 sim free. This is perhaps due to lesser demand though.

Currently, the Note 9 is still $999. Rather somebody finds that with carrier incentives or trade-ins, that might be different. But my point is, it’s not just Apple Someone can point the finger at, when smart phones in increased in price substantially over the years, when Samsung and other manufacturers have risen the costs. Personally I think it’s because of marketing, but I also think it’s the rising cost of technology has changed, where components and hardware in general are more expensive.

That’s probably the same price as the UK even at $999. It was £999 ($1300) a couple of months ago but has come down considerably depending on where you buy it but that’s not with a carrier or trade in.

The note 9 starts at £899 (128GB) over here and the 512GB is £1099 which is the same price as the 64GB max. So I think whilst Samsung are expensive it’s not as expensive as the new iPhones in the UK and like you said there are always discounts, trade ins and the prices come down after a few months.

Apple are pricing themselves out of existents with their pricing now.

I love Apple products as they for me so simple to use. I started off with the first iPhone, then a iPad, then a MacBook and then a Apple Watch.

I upgrade my iPhone every 2 years give or take.

I had a IPhone 6s for 2 and a half years and then dropped it after a few weeks before bragging I had never broken my phone yet. Then I stupidly did.

So I reluctantly spent £800 on the 8+ as I hated paying £800 let alone a £1000 which is ridiculous. Contracts in the UK are also stupid £60+ a month for a contract is a joke.

This was in March and low and behold they have now released a new phone and this one is £1100. Contracts again in the UK are now nearly £100 .

I have friends like me who had stayed with Apple for the last 10 years on phones and we are all saying the same we won’t upgrade with them again as you can not justify a months wage on a phone. You can buy a laptop for the price of the new Max.

I just did a google search to see what it was sim free and third party sites offer it as little as £649, but with sites like that you have risk. There’s just no budging with iPhone prices it seems.

This! I didn’t upgrade this year because I bought an 8 last year and prices are too high now. Sooner or later you have to ask the question, what does this phone do that the old one doesn’t and is it worth that much to you to have the latest. For me that answer is nothing.

Well Samsung does use cheaper components than the iPhone X’s max, perhaps that’s it?

I think that’s the crux of it, and it’s catching up to all the smartphone manufacturers.

I’ve been on the smartphone train since the Sony Ericsson P800 in 2002 (anyone remember that?) and each new generation has been an exciting step closer to that dream of a capable, practical, reliable pocket computer that does it all, with no bigger leap forward than the original iPhone (or more specifically the 3G and it’s AppStore). But somewhere along the line a few years back, that dream was realised. The perfect smartphone already exists and most of us have one. That’s the challenge facing anyone wanting to sell a new one.

Apple always make that silly claim with each new release that model x is their “best iPhone yet” - it’s never rung more hollow than now.
