my work is upgrading everyone from the 6 to the 7 now that it is discounted...there are options other than the 10 available.

Smartphone craze is waning. Most of the features are really gimmicks.

New way to unlock your phone
Taller display
Curved display
Bezel-less display
Animoji
Dual lens

With the exception of Animoji... nearly everything else on that list is available in the Galaxy Note 8 and other flagships.

Iris/Face unlock, 18:9 display, curved edges, tiny bezels, dual-lens cameras...

So are these really gimmicks? Or are they features that all major smartphones will have from now on? :p

I wouldn't call them gimmicks. More like differentiators. How they are implemented or what they are paired with could be construed as a gimmick though.

What sort of business are you in mate out of interest? I’m guessing it must be a huge medical company with hundreds of sales staff to have a £1m company phone budget? GlaxoSmithKline or something like that? :)

I work for a software company. We’re still on a huge growth curve but have revenues exceeding 9 figures annually and head count that recently crossed over in to 4 digits. We do have hundreds of sales staff.

That makes sense now. I knew it would have to huge to have such large hardware budgets, especially as sales staff are notoriously careless with phones. Some of the iPads and iPhone 7’s that come back to us are smashed and look like they are dropped out of cars daily lol, hence why the latest iPhones are no longer offered. We only have 200 sales staff across Europe though.

Its more of a personal opinion but I wouldn't consider some of them as main features :D

The screen, the body, the cameras...

If those aren't main features of smartphones... what are? :p

The cameras in smartphones have been great for many years now and they slightly increase in mp and quality each year.
The body is pretty much the same with slight differences per generation either metal or glass back with a touchscreen in the front.
The OLED screen is nice but also has drawbacks when it comes to burn in and price increase.
The animoji is completely useless to me and also the slow 7.5w wireless charge. Coming out many years late to the game with Qi charging on the iPhone, only slower than other current capable androids out there.

If there's a list of features talking about the screen, body, and cameras... those would be "main features"

But let's take away the screen, body and cameras... what do YOU consider to be the "main features" of smartphones these days ?

That's actually the question I asked you in the first place. :p

The minimal camera upgrades each year are obviously not a main feature.
Smartphones for years now take good photos.
Body is not, the OLED screen I would consider as the main feature.
But in reality there are no main or groundbreaking main features. Smartphones had wireless charging and OLED screens for years prior to the iPhone.
I think the smartphone market is getting over saturated and running out of ideas or new additions.
You cannot reinvent the wheel every year like back in 2007 when the original iPhone was introduced;)

My iPhone 6S takes "good" photos... but the iPhone X takes "better" photos.

How is that not a main feature? ;)

These "minimal" camera upgrades are still very important to a lot of people.

I'd argue that camera upgrades are the biggest thing people look forward to when they get their next smartphone.

Nobody expects their new phone to be better at texting or web browsing... but taking better photos and videos? Absolutely.

I guess we can agree to disagree here... but I think camera upgrades are near the top of the list... or maybe at the very top.

That would put it in the "main feature" category. :p

Let's be honest... someone will notice they're taking better photos before they notice an increase in RAM or some other mundane spec.

I think that will apply to all smartphone manufacturers.

Do we really think the Galaxy S9 will be that much different than the S8 ?

Or the LG G7 from the G6 ?

I dunno though... automakers are still finding new things to put into cars... computer makers too.

I don't think we're out of ideas for smartphones... yet. :D

Yes, I agree that there are camera upgrades each year but its not really something I would go out and purchase a new phone based on that. My iPhone 7 Plus takes good photos but the iphone x takes slightly better photos. Not really a reason to spend $999.
To regular folks that are not professional photographers those minimal camera depth or slight MP upgrades are not that important.
I will have to disagree that the camera spec bumps are the biggest thing people look towards the new iphone. Far from it.

Yes about Galaxy and most smartphone manufacturers its the same thing with over-saturation. Not much new or different but incremental yearly updates.
Slightly better processor, some more ram and slightly better battery life per upgrade cycle is standard.
There's only so much you can add or change to a smartphone.

Every iPhone sells the best the following year they are released. The X likely sells between 25M-35M before this year ends.

We don't know if it will slow down dramatically or what? If it only sells 70M in its lifetime, then yes. You can say it didn't meet expectations as it is expected to sell over 130M in two years.

The most popular product ever from Apple is the iPhone 6 which sold two-thirds of the 220M sold so far between it and the 6 Plus. This X design will be around another 3-4 years. People are no longer rushing to buy the latest every year. Maybe if the X only sells 70M, it humbles Apple a bit.

I suspect if they could, Samsung would roll out an almost exact copy of the iPhone but put in all the options that make the Samsung Galaxy and Note so popular.
I know if I could combine them I would (iPhone and Note.) ;)

For sure

To me personally the biggest improvement/feature of the new iPhone X is the OLED screen.
But they went and killed it by cutting up the top of that nice screen to fit the earphone and sensors in order to completely eliminate the bezel.
Bad idea.
Seriously? Never understood these critiques. Seems like the same people crying about the notch, cried about the red dot on the Apple Watch crown. Neither design decision is significant to take away from the product itself or its usability.

I have over 100 people working in my company, not one has ordered an iPhone X. Its easy to make stats work for your argument. ;)
That makes sense if the company you work for doesnt use iPhones for their business.

Have you try watching a movie in full screen and have that notch there? I have and its ridiculous.

Maybe $1k for a phone that once started at $199 isn't settling well with the masses,

Maybe the X @ 1K is a bit too much for some people, but your stat of...

"a phone that once started at $199 isn't settling well with the masses" is wrong. The first iPhone listed for $499. The $199 figure was for a phone that was under contract for 2 years, with the balance paid for by adding it to the monthly wireless charge.

And that phone had a 3.5" screen with only 4Gb with sub blazing speed of 2G.
