In the past year, they have introduced three Touch ID iPads (iPad, iPad Air, iPad Mini) and a Touch ID laptop (MacBook Air). Anyone thinking that Apple may eventually release some kind of Touch ID phone (refreshed SE, internal update to the 8) over the next twelve to 18 months?

Perhaps an in-display fingerprint sensor but nothing with the traditional one on the 8/SE.

Unfortunately, none of the current in-display FPS technologies (ultrasonic and optical) are any good.......so, i doubt we will see Apple adopting such incompetent biometrics.

If they introduced more TouchID devices, then it will be traditional TouchID.

Yeah, they released TouchID devices, all of which were old recycled designs and are not flagships. Of course the old low end stuff is going to use the old TouchID.

The Macbooks got TouchID as the logical step because they had nothing at all prior for biometric security. Expect them to move towards FaceID next time around.

We really gotta start locking these threads, it's every day. TouchID is NEVER coming back to iPhones.

Want TouchID? Go buy a Samsung, where it's under the display in one specific area of the entire screen and where you have nothing to feel to know if you are in the right part of the screen or not.

How do you know? Only Apple can tell if it's coming back or not.

can't blame them, faceid is unreliable junk.

nothing more than a gimmick with a failure rate 3x that of touchid.

it didn't even work when it was demo'd to the entire world lmao.

Nice. I guess you and I live in different worlds. FaceID is incredibly reliable for me... and is significantly more secure (faces vs fingerprints)... but yeah, if you think it's "unreliable junk" and "a gimmick", then it must be true,

"We" "Lock"

You don't have a say in what other people want to post and discuss. Perhaps if posts on Touch ID don't please you, don't open them.

"Never"

Never is a long time. While you may be right, none of us mortal Apple users really know. If people yell loud enough, Apple may bring it back. Keep yelling folks.

Right it’s not like Touch ID ever fails when you sweat a bit, or when your hands are wet, or during cold weather. But sure keep spewing your anti Face ID posts.

I think they are just reusing old parts. They made it quite clear that they were done with the FPS at the iPhone X keynote. However if they did choose to go with an in display FPS say next year it would have matured to a level at which Apple would consider using it.

Did they not release iPads with Face ID?

There literally is nothing indicating/rumored Apple is releasing an in-display fingerprint sensor for any iPhones. As a matter fact, that was even debunked by Craig Federighi when he mentioned in an interview about a year ago that Apple experimented touch ID under the display and ultimately abandoned that in place of Face ID.

Side Note:

The Only reason Apple is still using touch ID like on the iPad mini, the $329 iPad, is because it doesn’t require a complete chassis overhaul where they can use older components to keep the price affordable.

I hope they release an updated X phone with both Touch ID and Face ID. Both work in conditions that the other don’t and would make a great update.

That would be my preferred solution also.
There are contexts of usage where each one really shines over the other.

Hard to believe in your statement as multiple poles have been taken here and FaceID was preferred over touchID every time.

I will take FaceID over TouchID any day. Works so well I forget what it is doing.

Not really. Remember "Apple will NEVER release a big phone" ? "NEVER release that cheap wireless method", "NEVER remove 3D Touch" ? I can go on...
This isn't the same, since when has Apple ever gone back to older technology after releasing new tech?

If Apple is able to integrate the finger print scanner across the whole screen, then maybe we will see it, otherwise I think FaceID is here to stay for a while.

That's very true..

But..
It's also a horrendous way to make decisions over time.

If a "new tech" is implemented but it isn't as great in practice as Apple had hoped and/or if there's a better compromise to make, they should.

Nothing is worse than just "making a decision" and "sticking with it simply because the decision was made".

I'd love that too! Doubt we'll see it... but would sure be nice.

Even better to give a security option allowing users choice if they want to use one or the other, or both.

With this I totally agree with your point. I think it's fine to go back to old plans, especially if older designs worked and your new ones don't, I just don't see Apple ever adopting that philosophy unfortunately.

Yes, I suspect that they will release a sort of iPhone ‘classic’ that’ll be an iPhone 7 body and camera with an a12 and haptic touch w/ & keep this model around for 3 or so years.

Reason: for those who can’t or won’t pay for the latest and greatest & those that just want the classic form factor.
