Honestly, I can't see myself ever using a Windows laptop ever again. Having a cold laptop on my lap 90% of the time to lukewarm even under heavy loads is something I will probably never experience on a Windows laptop. And the ridiculous battery life. And the fact that I don't lose performance when it's unplugged. I'm very impressed with the direction Apple is going.
It might be possible when Windows are supported on ARM chips (when and how will that happen I do not know).
Would be so cool to game in an ARM windows gaming laptop that does not turn into a jet engine.

I know somebody whose Alienware laptop sounds like a jet engine when it's in sleep mode, lid closed. He's a savvy computer user, I know he keeps it free of viruses and malware... but you can always, always hear his computer roaring away when you're in the same room.
It is probably calling onto the mothership on the moon ;)

I have a lenovo legion 5 pro (intel) and play the games in quiet mode so its not loud :)

Is the OP high?!

The slow release cycle was the worst part of the old machines!

We want to update our developers machines every ~3 years, and they all roll on different cycles depending on when they started. Historically the current available hardware from Apple was rarely up to date.

Continuous frequent updates means that what you buy is always relatively new, irrelevant of your own cycle.

Hm. I replaced a 10 year old MBP last year, and don’t anticipate replacing my new one for at least 5-7 years.
Me too (well, 11-years). What did you change from? Went from my 2010 top-spec 17" i7 MBP which had gained 3 TB of internal storage over the years and had been stripped and re-thermal pasted twice but was finally just unable to run my music projects reliably, to a new 16" Max with 32 GB RAM / 4TB / 32-core GPU. This thing's unsurprisingly far faster and I can now run all my plugins and as many instances as I like, do loads more in the box without outboard gear and I don't have to crank buffer sizes when mixing. It even games when I have spare time!

If I have to replace this >£4k laptop next year like the OP suggests, then I'd be mightily pissed! 🤣🤣🤣 Later this year/next year is the year to replace my 6.5 y/o iPhone 6S.

Still need the old one running though occasionally, as some old obsolete but still brilliant hardware I have has an editor and drivers that only works on old intel stuff and is clearly never going to be updated.

Just replaced a 13 Year old Macbook Pro 17" with a 2021 16'' MBP M1 Max, the 17'' MBP was purchased in mid 2009 with a top of the line (back then) Core 2 Duo 3.06 processor later updated with a whooping 8GB RAM and a replacement 1TB SSD and additional 1TB internal SSD that replaced the DVD drive, these upgrades actually gave the laptop another 6+ years of usability.

Reason? it was not cutting it anymore. 😂

the way i see it, it all depends on a persons habit, some people have to have the latest and greatest others don't, and only upgrade when it is really needed.

I’m still using my 2015 MacBook Pro daily. Still runs awesome. I don’t anticipate upgrading til we’re at macOS Blythe

I've only just replaced my 2009 27" iMac and only because I got a killer deal on a refurbed 2014 Mac mini.

You don't need to be on the latest and greatest if what you've got now fits your workflow.

I do! I am about to upgrade from the 15" 2015 MBP to this M2 MBA.

The tech update cycle ensures that people who need machines when they have to gets the latest increment. Instead of buying a new machine that was updated 2 years ago (need to buy because old machine broke down), and an update comes in 1 year later and the differences in performance is so huge. But most people don't buy new machine every time when there is a new update.
I would highly advice against an MBA. Get the 14" MBP.

Yes, and small boys with low and small this and that, needs to show the world they are and have something. A NEW phone, or Apple 'toy' all the time.
Must be hard to think they need to upgrade everything every year at least, when Apple releases something, to be someone.
For God's sake, oh I meant, for Apple's sake, upgrade every year, otherwise there's no Apple heaven for you, ever. 😂
Agreed, the only one benefiting is Apple.
