Does anyone recommend to use the default Mail app or is Outlook the to choose?

My main concern is security. Which mail app would be secure and stable? The Mail app or Outlook?

Please don’t suggest another app. All I need is either Mail or Outlook.

Thanks

As someone who uses both, I find outlook to be way more organized and have a better interface. Not sure about security and stability, though most email is encrypted nowadays. Outlook's "Focused" inbox feature is very helpful.

Have used both.
If you are on 13.4.1 and the Mail app gives you problems (bugs) I would go with Outlook.
If you are on 13.5 Beta and can live with the bugs in Mail, use Mail.

Personally, till Apple fixes Mail, I am sticking to the app designed for the email I am using.

The fact there's an option to mark as read from the lock screen without having to actually look at the email, like you have to on Apple Mail is one feature I like.

I really liked Outlook for awhile, but it wouldn't stay logged into my iCloud mail for more than a few days, and with the app specific password, it was a pain to log in over and over. I have switched over to Edison Mail and like it even better than Outlook and don't have the problem staying logged in.

I will go with Outlook as it seems the Mail app is till buggy according to my test emails. The messages were sent through, but I hear no notifications sounds or notifications at all, except on the Mail app icon (Badges). That's it.

I left all notifications for the Mail app as default (untouched) and they seemed fine. But when messages arrive, no sounds or banners on the lock screen...

So yes, the Mail app seems to be still buggy.

I've been using Apple Mail since the MobileMe days with an "at me" email address and it's been fine for me and my usage.

I switched back to using Mail app just to see how things work out as the notifications seems to be back to normal by doing the below steps:

1. Uninstall/Reinstall Mail app
2. Once in the Mail app, hit Mailboxes and Edit, and I removed the VIP mailbox.

Tested this by sending out many test emails from my other email account from my Windows PC and started to get sounds as well and banners on the lock screen.

Just a needed info to everyone who has had similar issues.

Another thought, does the Mail app support opening Outlook calendars and Outlook meetings?

Keep an eye on things.
I have done that couple of times on both a Pro Max and IPP and it never lasted.
Hope your experience is better.

I much prefer Apple Mail over Outlook for email. I find it has much better search. It's conversation view is also very helpful. I use for gmail and used it for Office 365 email until Catalina 10.15.4. It seems that update allowed my company to enforce its policies and restrict mail to Outlook.

Now I use Outlook for my Office 365 email. I don't like the stable release very much. I do like the new version available on the Office Insider Fast track. Its search seems to actually find what I am looking for.

Only thing I can't stand about Outlook is the badge count is always off. Sometimes it says I have 5 unread emails when I only have 2. It only started this about 6 months ago. Not sure if uninstalling and reinstalling the app would fix it, but didn't want to fool with adding accounts back. I use Mail for my iCloud account and Outlook for my two work accounts.

I’ve had the same problem with Outlook. Support told me after a long conversation that this is a known issue and will be fixed in some of the later updates. But I think they gave it up.

I liked Spark too. But it doesn’t load every new email. On every account. Apple Mail is still broken. So I’m using Edison Mail too. And I like it.

It’s the Apple Calendar app that’s used to access your outlook/Exchange meetings.

I would avoid using the Apple mail/calendar apps to Accept/Reject calendar invitations from MS Exchange. The Exchange Activesync implementation by Apple is buggy and it occasionally results in calendar invitations that are permanently stuck in the inbox, cannot be deleted, or keep reappearing. If you prefer to use Apple mail and Calendar keep a copy of the outlook app around and use that to accept/reject meeting invitations.

I accept / decline meetings via the Apple Calendar app 24/7 (around 50+ a week) and I have yet to experience any stuck invitations or other glitches caused by using the Calendar app but I guess ymmv. I also use the Mail app exclusively and it does well (other than notification settings reseting every once in a while and delayed downloading when opening after a notification came in).

I get why people complain about the mail / calendar app though, wish Apple would focus on both in one of the major releases and give them the Notes / Reminders treatment sooner rather than later... but they seem to have a thing for redesigning the Photos app every release instead (don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the iOS 13 year/month/days browser and for you tab... but I'd also love resources being invested into essential productivity apps like Mail or Calendar).

I dumped Apple Mail for Microsoft Outlook a long time ago and have never looked back. I totally recommend that everyone do the same! Hopefully in iOS14 Apple will allow us to set it as the default email client.

While you will note my total happiness with Outlook in my other comments- I do not use it for iCloud mail, I find that it only works correctly with Apple mail- and that is all that I have my apple mail doing.

Edison Mail is not good on security. In fact, they sell the information they scrape from your emails.

And when I set this?

The point is that it took news articles exposing Edison to get to that opt out option. It should have ALWAYS been opt in, not required the user to figure out how to opt out of data collection.

If it took that much press to get them to stop doing something shady that should have NEVER been that way by default, what else is being done in the background still?

Its the trust factor. For many it is gone with Edison. If you aren't paying for the product you need to figure out how the company makes money.

As long as Apple doesn’t fix it’s Mail app people will use other apps like this

I've used both, too. As far as security is concerned, I think it's up to the individual user as to how much faith they may have in either company. Not only for not skimming the (*anonymous*) info in your mails and selling it off to 3rd Parties. But also how does a user feel about your info and emails buried away in corporate servers elsewhere, and the chance of hacking. And who may have have a better rep in that regard?
As for usage, its been pretty much equal for me - though Apple does seem to have some serious lagging going on with retrieving Mail these days. Notification Icon will show new mail, but opening up app and it can be some time (in one case I timed, 43 seconds) to actually get the mail on the device. Then again, there are cases where Outlook can't access the entire email without a secondary click within the email body. I think that's limitations actually imposed by iOS itself. Irritating.
Both allow for adding attachments now (not always the case with Apple - and then, it had to be a photo), but Apple's option to do that still a little buried away - not as obvious as Outlook.

I note you specifaclly asked about these two - noted others making other suggestions. I've tried a few, but really not what I'm looking for in any of those. Currently on iOS Mail.

Very true. @1144557 had a good point about the money ... most never consider that.

Welllllllll its not that simple. Gmail and Outlook apps are free and they arent doing anything more than their mail services already or dont do. Ther business model isnt making money on an iOS app; they have billions of income in the services, products and many other categories.

Its the 3rd party dev apps you have to be careful with.

THAT is my bigger concern that anonymous data about my Amazon purchases sold to 3rd parties which I really dont care all that much about.

Someone gets into their servers, they have ALL of your data. Password resets to accounts, the mail account, banking, credit cards, stocks, etc etc. Everything is digital and requires an email address these days.

If you said do you trust Microsoft security, who host millions and millions of 365 accounts and I have not heard any major issues, or Readdle/Edison with a limited track record. Who would you choose?
