I wonder if Apple is going to make any significant expansions of cycling directions by the end of the year. They didn’t mention anything at WWDC but that could just be because they want to be on the safe side in case there are any delays or problems that pop up. The same thing can be said for expansions of Look Around in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan.

London? lol

I’m glad Vegas is getting it. Hope the entire Strip is modeled!
I should have written: I am disappointed that Apple will not release European cities during this year. Maybe 3 European cities between January 2023 and wwdc23?😛

Just over 2 years after the release of the new map data throughout the United States, Apple has still not released look around in all American territories. In my opinion, Apple lacked pragmatism about look around. Most people want to have look around. Whether look around have Poi or not is secondary. Worse, the United Kingdom and Ireland are I don't know how many times smaller and it's the same problem. In my opinion, Apple has probably already finished the United Kingdom and Ireland but Apple has decided that until the United States is released, the other countries will wait...

Regarding Japan, I don't understand why Apple has still not released the new map data. What is Apple's interest in not releasing the new map data there?

Finally, the case of Saudi Arabia worries me a little. We will see if Apple will release the new map data with its own data or third-party data...

I‘ve been rating hundreds of places here and I frankly seem to be the only one doing so (in addition to my parents accounts being used to boost my favorites).

Apple needs to do a better way of advertising the rating mechanism, the link buttons seem to be glanced over way too easily.

Apple should allow you to opt into push notifications that ask you to leave a rating for a POI you‘ve been at. They have loads of on-device data to figure these POIs out: Apple Pay transactions, significant locations, photos etc.
They should also allow quick and easy rating via e.g. photo details in the photos app (if it detects you at a POI, show a small tile with a way to quickly rate and post pictures) and also do the same for Apple Pay transaction lists.

They should also improve photos selection for when you post a rating. It‘s absolutely dreadful finding relevant pictures in the overlay. POIs have location data and so do probably most of your pictures… why not filter down to a selection that matches the POI location as a default suggestion? I honestly stopped bothering with adding pictures to my ratings because it‘s so damn unintuitive to find the correct photos (searching for locations is too broad and even then it NEVER shows all images taken at a location or shows them completely out of order so you can‘t quickly find all of them).

I‘ve sent Feedback reports outlining the things above as suggestions.
Hey. So I’m running the iOS 16 beta and I rated a restaurant I was at today. There’s a few new changes you might like. First, it looked like photos you upload can actually show up and be used on Maps. You can create a little profile for yourself so others can see who the photo is from. Also, it seemed to intelligently recommend which photo it wanted me to post. I’m not sure if it was based off of GPS or time, but the app recommended the photo I took of my meal.

I think it is pretty clear that LookAround is tied to detailed city experience and therefore, the detailed roads, trees and elevation data.

I’m a broken record, but I really think they are planning on a mass release of not only LookAround across the US, but detailed roads at a minimum at the same time…possibly trees and elevation if they are tied to the same data/work.

the cartoon POI’s are completely separate even though that seems to be what people focus on when the cities are released.

I don‘t really care about having a profile or my pictures showing up prominently, but that exif location data suggestion is a welcome change.

Did they show a preview of Las Vegas with the City Experience at some point during WWDC? I came across this article on my Google news feed with a picture of what is clearly Ceasar’s Palace in City Experience detail. But it’s not public yet.

Yep, they showed a quick glimpse of it and mentioned that they were adding it. (Didn't say when). Then Craig said they were adding 6 more by the end of the year and called out Chicago, Miami, and Sydney specifically.

As excited as I was to hear Chicago, it's got me a little nervous! I'm hoping the detailed city experience covers an area larger than our current Look Around coverage and then they expand Look Around to match up with it like they have in other cities. With any luck, it'll expand out far enough that I'm included in it! It's probably an "all or nothing" thing for where I am 😂 But...part of my drive to work is in an area that is currently covered by Look Around, so if anything, at least I can get the detailed experience for a part of my commute!

The new maps popped up for me today in France for the first time (Sat, 18 June), with speed limits, traffic lights, stop signs and similar extravaganza! ;) Exciting times!

PS I am sure they were still old yesterday, as I did the same drive in the opposite direction.

Did you mean June 18? How did you find the new map data? What region are you from?

Yes, June 18, I have corrected it, thanks for spotting!

I did not do anything special, it just appeared. I used the maps the day and evening before, but they were still old style. Then during my drive today they changed.

I am based in Isère and I was driving from here to Geneva and back. FWIW, the maps on my wife’s iPhone are still old, while my mother-in-law’s - also new. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This fits the pattern we saw in the US several years ago when these new maps were being rolled out here. You may see them for several weeks and then they may disappear from your device and appear on those of others. Then, at the appointed time, it will roll out for everyone.

Another small observation about the new maps testing roll-out in France: it turns out that I have the new maps only on my iPhone, my iPad is still showing up the old ones. This probably means that Apple pushes the new maps on a device basis and not our Apple IDs?

Just came back from a week in New Orleans. But I didn't rent a car, so I didn't get to play with Maps much. I used it mainly for walking and transit directions.

Continue to be really, really perplexed as to why the walking directions in transit directions aren't as detailed and intuitive as *actual* walking directions.

Also interesting, was that the Apple Maps transit map there was more accurate than the RTA's own maps.

I wonder if it is the integration of third party transit data with Apple's own data, so it only provides basic walking info but can't combine both routes in a single transit route seamlessly?

While on the new maps trial in France, I currently seem to have lost the ability to report the accidents or dangers. It used to be three options in the menu below (add a stop/report/share ETA), but now it has shrunk down to just two (search/share ETA). The rest of the new maps features remain intact, however (the visuals, stop signs, speed limits, traffic lights, etc.). Must be some sort of a transition glitch…
