You don't just lift the skin off a cow and drape it over your phone, my dude. It has to be processed, it has to be tanned, cut, dyed, formed over a plastic frame... all processes that use energy and other materials.
And farmers rely on all parts of the animal being bought so if you take away the value (by not being able to sell the skin) then hopefully, over time, fewer animals die just so we can cover our phones/feet etc with dead animal skin. Good move by Apple if true.

What are the chances of Apple announcing the iPhone 15 Bumpers 🤪

Please share your sources for this leather being a byproduct of cows already killed for meat
PETA: “Most leather comes from cows raised in the agriculture industry, where their flesh is turned into “beef” and their breastmilk is made into cheese, yogurt, and ice cream."

One Green Planet: “Of the leather from cows, the majority is taken from those who are slaughtered for their meat or from dairy cows no longer producing enough milk to remain profitable."

I got this on Amazon. $10. Works great. Holds my drivers license, a couple cards and some cash.

Their leather cases are garbage so can't believe they would stop selling them with the $$ they make off of them. Plenty of other options if you want a leather case (that doesn't fall apart after a few months) if apple does stop selling them.

This still seems like more greenwashing.

From the 'Apple Leather' materials page:
"...peel, body and fibers of the apple is obtained and the drying process is carried out.The dried product is mixed with polyurethane and laminated on recycled cotton and polyester fabric..." (my emphasis on the materials used).

So, sure, some fruit waste + plastics. Another way to keep the petroleum companies in business and ruining the planet for profit.
Yeah, that doesn't sound too good. Even if it's from recycled cotton and polyester.
Not sure if ”real” leather production is so much better though?

Erm… yes there are industrial processes to manufacture a case just like any other case. What point are you trying to make here?
That 1) tanned leather is not some kind of "freebie" and 2) it has environmental consequences and 3) reduced demand for livestock is undoubtedly a good thing.

Would be really awesome if they'd go the extra mile this year and make premium cases with one of the many vegan leather alternatives. There were a lot of cool developments in the industry in recent years, adapting/developing new material like Pinatex (made from pineapple leaves), cork and cactus.

I always went with the Apple silicone cases so far, but would immediately pay more for a premium vegan leather case. Let's make this happen Apple! 💚

I've used an Apple leather case with my iPhones over the past 10 years, but the recent ones appear to be of a lower quality.

Looks like I'll just have to go with a Bullstrap case - I will not be giving up the leather.

If they come up with a nice alternative that's vegan and just as good or better, that would be great for both the environment and animal welfare.
My understanding is that leather is a byproduct of slaughtering cows for their meat, so creating a synthetic material wouldn't necessarily be a win for the environment.

Basically every source on leather says the same thing, it is a byproduct of the meat industry. But "your suppliers" claim meat is the byproduct. Ignoring the fact, that it is suspect how only "your suppliers" think so, logically it makes no sense to breed animals for leather."

With that logic, it makes no sense to breed mink. Which we do.
pm me and I can mail you from my corporate e-mail address, which you can then check...

Anyway, if you just think for a second about two of the most important leather supplying countries: Italy and India, it should be noted immediately that in the large parts of India, slaughtering cows is rather frowned upon. You know WHY the slaughter of cows was made legal there? For leather production...

If we look at Italy, they make their leather for the fashion industry. To quote an article from 2016:

It's like with pigs and bacon: if everybody just wants bacon but not the less tasty parts, you need to raise WAY more pigs than what you'd need if the meat was eaten indiscriminately. A cow only has so much skin; if everybody wants leather, you need more cows than what you can get from just slaughtering the ones we already raised. How do you do that? By impregnating cows and slaughtering their young for the skin.

Turnip peels, maybe? How about leather made from impossible burger cows?

One year, I bought an Apple leather case and a toaster oven at the mall on the same trip. Guess which cost more? I’ve been using silicone since then.
