Definitely support Apple going vegan on their leather cases. I'm sure people are going to give them 💩 for it, but before you do, consider watching Dominion Documentary or Land of Hope and Glory (UK 'Earthlings' Documentary) on YouTube to see what cows go through.

I wonder if the slimmer edges of the 15 Pro screen will represent a challenge for case makers…
Maybe for some materials, but generally I don’t think so. My leather iPhone case barely has a lip as it is anyway. The friction of the case hugging the sides combined with the MagSafe magnet more than holds a case in place.

Been a long time since I used a case that had much of a lip thatd protrude into the front of the phone. My current case is so unobtrusive in that respect that I can see the side metal frame of the phone front on still.

Maybe some flimsier materials or those without MagSafe magnets will be impacted but.

Hopefully with the new material they can start doing nice colours again rather than the boring ass leather ones for the past few years. Just give me back a leather Product Red.

This happens to all my leather cases tbh
Not to my leather cases. I've only used Apple. Yes, they will patina which is normal, but I have not seen them peel and fray like the Apple silicone cases.

There was a video done by I believe a Swedish leather worker who showed by Apple leather cases from the past patina nicer than more recent ones. I'll see if I can dig it up. As I recall, it does not have to do with the quality of the leather but rather the kind of dye or something similar that was applied to the leather.

Edit: I found the video I was thinking of:

Basic argument has to do with the finishing or the coating. A very heavy coating means that it'll take the leather a long time to patina, but also patina unevenly in different spots. The leather worker in the video, Kim Bertilsson, says a lighter finishing makes for a better and more even patina.

how is leather not sustainable? you don't help the cause with misinformation.
Leather in itself is a sustainable material. But the entire mass animal slaughter industry (for meat or whatever) is not sustainable at all. The methane the animals emit, the enormous amount of water that's used, the transportation... so many things about animal products are not sustainable. So it's an obvious choice to get rid of it.

In the future we'll look back on this time with disgust about the industrial scale of killing other species.

(But I'm not here to convince you, I don't think this is the place to agree on such a world view.)

Personally I've bought the apple leather case for my 5S, 6S, X, and now 14; I love it. I know I could find a cheaper case but they just never feel quite as premium or good in the hand. My wife's apple silicone case especially just feels gross to me.

So yeah, I'll obviously deal but it would suck to see the leather case go. If it's just vegan leather but feels the same then great.

It would be nice if they introduce Alcantara cases to replace the leather ones (at the same price point), as I really cannot handle the silicone ones. The alcanside cases are quite expensive, especially with shipping outside Europe.

I hadn't bought leather since XS Max, they do seem to wear down much faster than silicone even when throwing it a purse. But always felt great to hold. I always have to use a case cause my grip is just bad on metal lol.

I used two silicones through the life of my 12, they still look great and surely they have fallen to the floor on planes and stadiums several times. I do prefer those 3rd-party plastic tough cases the most, but they don't hold MagSafe backs as secure.

The Caudabe Stealth and Synthesis cases have the strongest MagSafe magnets of any case I have ever used... stylish, functional and protective.

Apple may not release any leather cases for the iPhone 15 lineup, according to the Twitter leaker known as "DuanRui."

iphone-cases-yellow.jpg

DuanRui sources information from Chinese social media platforms, often revealing accurate insights into Apple's plans in the process. There is little other information about Apple's apparent move to discontinue leather cases at the current time, but "ShrimpApplePro" and 9to5Mac claim that they have heard the same information from other sources, so the rumor seems worth taking seriously at the current time.

Apple first released a series of leather cases in 2013 alongside the iPhone 5S. A refreshed selection of colors has accompanied every new iPhone model since then, featuring minor design refinements, such as the addition of aluminum buttons and MagSafe. Rather than overtly discontinuing premium case options, it seems likely that Apple could replace leather with an alternative high-end material that is vegan and has a smaller carbon footprint.

fairly certain this just means they are moving to a "vegan" leather like many cases on the market... its fake leather that looks like the real thing but doesn't really patina the same. apple's leather cases haven't patina'd well in the last few generations anyway... I suspect this change won't be noticed by many... it will still be the same texture / style leather looking cases (probably at the same high prices) but apple can add a new environmentally friendly feather to their cap.

To me a lip that protrudes past the front of the phone is the whole point of the case as it prevents the glass from hitting a hard surface dead on

Otherwise what is the point of a case at all?

(Genuine question)

If true, it will be hard to outdo the beautiful patina with older saddle brown leather
My first Apple leather case was saddle brown, but unfortunately I just don't have them long enough for them to develop the patina I was hoping for. Even though I've now gone from annual iPhone updates to every two years, its just not long enough for the case to age nicely and there's no chance of the old case fitting the new phone.

Please share your sources for this leather being a byproduct of cows already killed for meat

I don't know much about the issue, so I googled it, and even PETA says that most leather comes from the agricultural industry. They say it's not a bi-product but a co-product, which is technically fair enough, but there are very few cows being slaughtered for their hide when 95% of its value is in the meat.

Ever since the iPhone 6+, I started buying the Apple leather case for every iPhone, even my 13 Pro Max that I bought a year ago. A second 13 Peo Max I bought the Silicone case for. After a full year, that silicone case still looks like it did a year ago so I bought another silicone case for the other 13 Pro.

I dropped my 13 Pro Max in a parking lot a few weeks ago and it landed face down. Picked it up and it was perfect in every way. Even the case didn't get any damage. Even went and bought a silicone case for my XS that I still use today as well.

Might be bad working on my part, but by a lip I was referring to it wrapping over the front surface of the device, to basically grip from the front and rear with the bezel partially covered. Cases will protrude past the glass so that when sat face down, the display doesn’t touch the surface. What cases I’ve used more recently don’t do is encroach on the display or even the bezel itself in any significant way but rather are tight on the sides and have a MagSafe magnet, which means there’s no need for much overhang on the front. In turn having a smaller bezel probably won’t limit the ability to make a case too significantly as the bezel isn’t used by the case.

Hopefully that makes more sense? Definitely agree the case needs to be marginally taller than the phone to keep the display off flat surfaces when placed face down.

Now you get to enjoy an "eco friendly" (ironically less eco friendly than leather) option instead. Just like the alternative food products that go bad quicker or crumble in your hand.

Would you care to explain how it would be less eco friendly than leather?

Aside from not even knowing what this mystery case is made from, do you understand how the industrial raising and slaughter of animals works and the environmental toll it takes? As well as the process for making leather and all of the chemicals involved?

Totally get it

That was my misunderstanding
