If true, it will be hard to outdo the beautiful patina with older saddle brown leather
I used to love the saddle brown leather cases until they changed how the cases are colored (iPhone 12?) and it started looking like absolute garbage with time instead of developing a patina. It’s like the color just rubbed off instead of staining.

Why? Besides those sucking anyway
(I bought 3 ... lol)

You can basically watch them fall apart over time, especially if you are living in humid climate like Miami

The Silicon Case is not much better though, as others have already pointed out, the edges always start to peel off (revealing the plastic underneath) after a while. Ironically my 2 EUR fake from AliExpress is still going strong (I have to admit it does not have the same "feel" to it though)

I’m using the dark purple maroon on my iPhone 13PM right now. Every iPhone I’ve had since the 6S has been leather cover from Apple. Why would they stop it ?!
Could be a supply chain shortage:

Do you guys remember iPhone 5c cases?

I had the white one. Those cut out holes certainly collected a lot of lint, dust, dirt, fluff etc. etc. But i liked the phone.

If they come up with a nice alternative that's vegan and just as good or better, that would be great for both the environment and animal welfare.
Isn't vegan leather typically vinyl? Or usually it's just a polymer of sorts. (I always laugh at the thought of calling it 'vegan' leather. Let's just call it vinyl and not attach the vegan name to it ;-) )

I hope they do an alternative. I always get the leather case on launch for Fall and Winter and then to mix things up half way through the year, I get the silicone for the Spring and Summer

I stopped using the leather cases when they jacked up the prices. I think that was when the iPhone 12 launched. Been using the silicone cases ever since and honestly I prefer them now. They seem to hold up much better and the color has never faded on mine. I just wish Apple offered better colors at launch.

Strange move. I usually get silicone anyway.
They don’t patina well and are the antithesis of durable. And drops cause scuffing, avulsions, etc. which then lead to peeling. The plated coating on the buttons wear away.

Not strange. They’re overpriced and, anecdotally, suck.

This sounds to me like a trap to catch leakers, but I switched to their silicone cases years ago regardless.

I like the feel of the silicone case better than the leather when the silicone is new, but it falls apart (chips) too fast and easily so I choose leather. Aging leather looks nice, aging silicone looks like something to throw away and replace. Both silicone and leather feel better than hard plastic. Whatever they do had better be as good or better than the leather or they will lose their case sales to third parties.

hopefully this does (as the article posits) end with a replacement that’s vegan and just as premium. I made the very bold decision to not have a case on my 14PM, and I’m currently typing on it with a shattered back…gotta get to the Genius Bar at some point + get a case for it. it will definitely be a leather case that matches the Deep Purple—that “Ink” color is gorgeous. they’ve been reliable cases since they came out.
