So instead of leather, it'll be Naugahyde? What about the poor Naugas?

About time. It's a ridiculous backwards idea to kill animals for phone cases. Or anything else, for that matter. There are high quality vegan alternatives available, that use much less resources and are much more environmentally friendly. This is in line with Apple's sustainable goals, and I'm actually surprised this change didn't already happen years ago.
Since our betters want us to eat bugs instead of cows, why not turn the methane- and CO2-emitting bovines into iPhone cases?

Apple leather perhaps?
So they can continue to call them Apple leather cases. :D

This still seems like more greenwashing.

From the 'Apple Leather' materials page:
"...peel, body and fibers of the apple is obtained and the drying process is carried out.The dried product is mixed with polyurethane and laminated on recycled cotton and polyester fabric..." (my emphasis on the materials used).

So, sure, some fruit waste + plastics. Another way to keep the petroleum companies in business and ruining the planet for profit.

Please just call it polyurethane, vinyl, or plastic...not 'vegan leather.' This is an environmentally negative choice.
I would be interested in reading credible sources that have data on this.

Could you point me in that direction?

I imagine this can be easily manipulated on both sides depending on where you start the measuring of environmental concerns.

I am not taking a position either way. Although, I don't have an issue with what its called for the same reason I don't have an issue with calling almond, oat, macadamia or any other nut, milk.

I do believe there will come a time where faux leather is made from sustainable sources that are not an oil derivative.

Animals aren’t killed for phone cases. Leather is a byproduct, the animals are being killed anyway.

And that’s your choice, you don’t have to buy a leather phone case.

If this rumor is true, it's disappointing to me. I've used nothing but leather cases, and they've always lasted and worn well for years. I prefer the feel of leather in my hand, rather than the silicone/plastic/artificial materials used in other cases. We all have different opinions, so there's mine.

If the rumor is true, it is too bad if the leather cases go away. The first party Apple cases are the best I have ever used, IMO. On my iPhone 13 Mini, I started with an Apple Silicone case, which was very grippy and worked very well. However, after a year and a half, it was worn out, with most of the silicone covering peeled away. I then replaced it with an Apple leather case. It is almost as grippy, and gets better and softer with age. I had an Apple leather case on my previous iPhone Xs. They are the best iPhone cases, hands down, and they are virtually indestructible.

The accessories Apple offers that revolve around their main products such as cases for the iPhone represent a significant portion of their revenue each year. They will not jeopardize that revenue by simply leaving that share of the case market to their competitors. This is not going to happen.
Their options are: increasing prices and/or lowering quality - which they have done both in regard to their leather cases in the last years. Another solution would be to substitute the leather cases with something else, like the car industry has been doing for a couple of years now. This would line up with their long time goal of having a smaller CO2 footprint.
Or they will just offer a leather substitute alongside their standard line-up to see if they can score a hit with it in the years to come.

I always buy their leather case. I'm dumbfounded if they don't sell them this year. It'll upset stockholders I would assume.
I'd assume stockholders aren't nearly as concerned over individual products—whatever they may be—as they are concerned with the overall profitability and growth prospects of their investment.

If they don't sell them, then they've determined that that micro-level decision over a particular product serves that macro-level interest of increasing shareholder value (which, as a public company, they are legally obligated to maximize).

Whether they're right that (potentially) killing off leather cases helps stockholders? Only time will tell.

I run a leather company part time, my suppliers are my source.
the old my dad works for Microsoft source, got it

Basically every source on leather says the same thing, it is a byproduct of the meat industry. But "your suppliers" claim meat is the byproduct. Ignoring the fact, that it is suspect how only "your suppliers" think so, logically it makes no sense to breed animals for leather.

You might be right, but how would you know that accessories alone are "significant"?

In Apple's earnings reports, "Wearables, Home, and Accessories" are all grouped together—how would you know how much of that is from "accessories" alone, and furthermore cases, and even further, specifically the leather case line?

You're so confident in your projection that I'm guessing it's not based on anecdotal inference?
