This thing is DOA. Meta has all but given up on VR. Microsoft exited its HoloLens investment as well. Even Google just recently decided to cancel their entire Google Glasses project (remember that?).

Wallstreet investors now see VR as a huge negative on tech stocks. In 2021, releasing this thing would have probably boosted Apple's stock. In 2023, this will drag Apple's stock down.

People refer to the Apple Watch as a device that took a few generations to become popular. But we've had a century of demand for a wearable device on your wrist. The Watch had a huge market. VR has a tiny market in comparison. If Apple doesn't sell enough, I can easily see them canceling the project after 2-3 generations.
I'm not a heavy gamer, but use the meta quest pro to code, watch movies, draw and study with it daily for many hours. The experience blows the iPad and the mac out. you dont want to take it off.

as an apple fan, I will definatly get the gen two of the apple headset.

I wounder how apple will design the experience. on the meta quest pro, with ar mode, you do not notice that you are in a headset. the edges are rounded, so it feels more like having a thick framed glasses. without having the side blockers.

what is apple's approach will be very interesting.

They already do, events & sports!

Apple own NextVR!
If Apple put cameras and mics into race cars with Spatial Audio enabled, that would be sweet.

Concerts, award shows or any other event with a dedicated seat for picking up video and audio would fit well also.

I’m more interested in a discreet AR device though. If this is more for AR, then maybe will live in the medical space somehow. Or be an accessibility tool.

This product was Tim Cook’s initiative all along, as yesterday’s report explained in some detail. He was just hands-off about the actual product details, as he tends to be in general.
In an attempt to keep headset wearers engaged with the real world, the device will have an outward-facing display showing their eye movements and facial expressions.

I’m having trouble wrapping my head around this part. Is this live video of our eyes?

Yes, unless you accidentally strap it on the wrong part of your body.

This is a VR headset so will flop hard, only thing that is going to work is AR.

Apple watch was $350 this thing is $3000
Your Apple Watch post isn’t completely wrong though. Most iPhone users aren’t Watch users.

I, myself, own an Apple Watch 6 and I only wear it 10% of the days.

Battery life sucks. It’s uncomfortable on my wrist. It’s really not that useful on a daily basis.

The most useful thing is just notifications so I don’t have to pick up the phone.

You have a (rumored) $3000/month mortgage payment? 😲 Even if Apple sells it at cost; you have a $1500/month mortgage payment? How oversized of a house do you have?

uh what?

a 550k mortgage @ 5% interest; over 30 years is ~3k. That's pretty standard in many countries, even for a crappy shoebox apartment in a tier 2 city.

If 3k is high, then you must be lucky to live in a country with access to lower interest rates; or cheaper homes.

I wear my Apple 100% when I'm awake, love it. I can't really imagine not having it. I use it for phone and notifications more than my iPhone.

I also have a samsung watch, but I don't like it near as much. But if I didn't have my Apple Watch, I'd wear it.

Medical, hospital, surgeons, engineers, power plants, microbiology, botanic, security, AI..., Endless possibilities to be sold and used by the 1000'. Not just basement gamers: but the professional world is very much on need of instruments to advance their search and, or their “modus operandi”> The success is already assured. And Apple knows. Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet were nothing but boys’ toys
This is the real world of AR/VR it isn't really a home use device in its current form. but to use it as a medical device, and other related fields where precision is critical it is a bit of a wait and see situation. Will VR be a serious technology... the answer is undeniably yes. This is what Tim Cook is looking at. The capabilities in education alone are staggering... universities could operate with a limited physical presence offering educators from around the globe. The catch is cost. and how to implement such a system. it is just like online education when it started. then COVID thrust it down all the way to elementary schools. some will be bleeding edge adopters, but there needs to be problem it solves. If you can go to Harvard for $12K a year virtually VS $40K a year physically it solves a problem. (ok that is super over exaggerated.... but you get the idea.). playing SMB 1-1 in Central Park is not solving a problem.... kinda cool but not a problem and not something people will do on the regular.
