Design wise: iOS 9>>>iOS 6
Performance and smoothness wise: iOS 6>>>iOS 9
iOS6 was very fast on iPhone5.
Fairly fast on the 4s.
Quite slow and laggy on the 4 and 3gs.

iOS9 will be very fast on the 6s
It's fast on the 6
I don't know about the 5s
It's average...a bit laggy on the 5
It's very laggy on the 4s

I don't mind the change and love some of the new features. I don't see any major difference on battery life. What I do see is charging takes so much longer - ridiculously longer. Usually I throw my phone in airplane mode and get ready for work and it'll go from 50% to 100% in an hour. Now I realize it's the weekend and started at 25% but it's been charging for almost 3 hours and still not at 100%.

What really is awful is that my reception is terrible. My usual places where I have good reception are now just bad. I do my walks along a trail by my house and have plenty of service and will stream radio stations. I can't even get to NPR. And in our capital city yesterday phone was showing LTE but when trying to look something up, it was just spinning.

I have the Plus and am so looking forward to upgrading to the Plus S but will be disappointed if th operating system just doesn't work well. I'd much rather have the basics work and work well rather than add more features.

While I don't agree with OP's sentiment in any way, I will note that my iPhone 5 runs very hot on iOS 9 and eats battery like no tomorrow. I've gone from 50% to 35% in just a minute or so, and the iPhone is clearly much warmer.
I would get that battery checked out or replaced at an Apple store. Even with the processor and GPU going full throttle, there is no way it can chew up that much battery in a minute.

I have never liked their aqua and metal brush idiotic conception. Worse UIs ever, especialy Mac OS 10.3. However their current flat conception for UI is not good too. They does not have control over fonts and internationalisation.

Apple needs to rethink iOS updates, and release them when they're ready, and not according to the new iPhone releases. All it causes is rushing.

Exactly.
Guys, do you remember iOS 7.0 ?
So remember iOS 7.1 and the big improvement that it brought.

I couldn't get through this entire thread without laughing.

Look, if you want an OS that never changes because it doesn't get updated, go get an Android phone.

But it is better to not update, if it changes to worse, see calendar icon on Monday (in my language). Total mess!

Not true. The performance is perfect on the 4S and it's pretty good on the 3GS as well. I have both devices still on iOS 6 so I am seeing it every day. I never owned an iPhone 4 but I'm guessing it's performance is somewhere in-between. iOS 6 is just a more optimised OS than the garbage they put out these days.

Well, NOT true is a strong word. :)
I respect your opinion but i don't consider iOS6 on a 3gs to be pretty good. In my opinion it's worse than a 5 on iOS9 (which has the same years as a 3gs had when iOS6 was launched). Also, according to many, 6 ran worse on a 4 than on a 3gs, because of the more "resoluted" retina display :)
Finally keep in mind that iOS6 slightly improved performance with updates. iOS9 is still at 9.0. Maybe it will get better, maybe not.

I'm usually not the one to complain about the new flat designs, but there's something about that iOS 6 book shelf design that just feels much warmer and more welcoming than the cold white background in iOS 7+
Agreed. I generally like post iOS7 redesigned stile, but ibooks is kinda cold and heartless. In general ibooks is not a very great app. And is the last Apple app to be a "black hole". Which is unforgivable

I respect you're opinion as well, but I really don't understand it. What is wrong the iPhone 3GS on iOS 6? Obviously it's not going to perform as well as later devices on that OS, but in my experience all the animations are smooth, and it rarely ever crashes. Maybe I should have said "it's pretty good for such an old device."

Well I've heard people say the iPhone 4 was fine on iOS 6, so there. :)

I have no plans to use iOS 9, so it makes no difference to me. I just came in here to defend iOS 6's honour.

Ahah :D fair enough.
Well, we all know experience varies from configuration to configuration and from person to person. I find iOS6 on 3gs a little bit on the slow side, but acceptable, especially for an old device. And that's good. What ruined iOS6 in my heart were the bugs of the first versions (like 6.0) which frustrated me a lot.
And also Apple maps in Italy were TERRIBLE back then. My whole town was behind a cloud -.- and it took some time to have google on the app store. :)

You may like woodish bookcases, but I do not like. Without option to choose: wood, glass, metal, …, or just flat/clean it is ugly and crazy. Wood-simulated case on portable digital device: it is just stupid.
