Admittedly this is likely an oversight on Apple’s part given it isn’t mentioned on their website but hoping this bit of text on the Apple Store app means we might finally get it later on in the year:

I had an odd thing when trying to use Apple Pay at Homebase yesterday. My phone gave the usual chime but the terminal didn't show any payment. Nothing showed on the phone screen as paid either. I tried twice before giving up and using my card. The cashier said he'd never seen that happen before.

Any news that the Oyster card could come to Apple Pay - would be an advantage for season tickets etc? US cities have got transit cards in the Wallet after all...

I don’t understand why London Transport is so far behind. One would have thought that they would have introduced an electronic version of the Oyster card for the Wallet app. 🤔

Do you have an example of such implementation on any transport mode in any other country?

Oyster in wallet would be great. I’m still young enough to have a railcard so I’d like to link it to an oyster to get cheaper fares on the rare occasions I am down in London. Atm I just use Apple Pay because I don’t want to carry an extra physical card around with me.

Chicago and Portland already have this implemented. Somewhere on the net I read that New York wants to bring its new Metrocard to mobile wallets too. Apparently it's based on the RFID tech that TfL developed for Oyster, so it should be possible...

Also can't imagine that it's in TfLs interest to pay even more fees to the major US card networks and UK & foreign banks when they could get customers to just use their own card.

Do not know how an Oyster card works, but is this any good? I have now got my Nectar card in my Apple wallet and it work fine. You can get this app in the App Store. Not sure about Android. 311A178D-56BC-463F-A63C-D7184D3EC373.png

That's only helpful for QR or barcode based loyalty cards for example. Oyster card will require direct implementation by Apple/TfL and access via the NFC chip.

How do you load up "their own card" with credit to use? Can't imagine it is in TfLs interest to pay fees to the major US card networks and UK & foreign banks AND have major backend/infrastructure costs. ;)

In China, Beijing and Shanghai metro cards are available in the wallet app. I used the Shanghai one, it's pretty fancy, you get the entry/exit station listed along with maps of the journeys. They have the same thing in most of the big android phone wallets, samsung huawei xiaomi etc too.

However, my local metro has gone the TFL way instead. Instead of working towards transit card integration, they've enabled contactless payments through unionpay quickpass (the contactless standard) and made it work with the extra layers of security apple pay and the like have. I know that the transit card is both owned and operated by another company on their behalf. I wonder if this was a reason behind it. What's the situation with TfL/Oyster?

A one off top-up is (this is just my assumption) better, whilst also maintaining control over the entire further payment process of season tickets, single fares etc. They could also introduce direct debit, as similar transit networks in other countries do this as well.

I'm just saying: I think it is in TfLs interest to not be completely dependent on payment networks for their entire travel & payment process.

No real need for them now, not with payments caps for it.
Only advantage would be to children or people who get free/discounted travel.

I tweeted the Tyne and Wear Metro a few months ago about them implementing Apple Pay at their gates, and Apple Express, they said they are working on it.

Well not really, because it’s tied to your device... also prefer to not have my account charged with little amounts all the time. A transit card by TfL for Apple Wallet makes sense.

I know Samsung Pay came out with the 'Transport Card' option a fair while ago and I wondered if it was similar to Apple's "Express Transit" offering which it seemingly is.

I appreciate Apple restrict access to the NFC chip but if it seemingly 'just works' with Samsung Pay I can't understand why it is a work in progress with TfL and Apple?

Does sound that way.

Samsung said it was "exclusive functionality". I'd not read that before. Perhaps it's contractual, similar to the rumoured apple pay octopus launch in HK; samsung have had that for years.

That's an entirely separate thing to oyster on apple pay/mobile wallets though.

TfL has been phasing out (or discouraging, at least) Oyster for a while, in favour of payment with contactless bank cards or Apple Pay.

Problems with Oyster (from TfL’s perspective) include the high cost of administering the system, crowds and queues at stations with people topping up cards, and big liabilities on their balance sheet for balances on old, inactive cards (which never expire!).

The only good reason to have an Oyster card now days is if you have a monthly or annual pass, are a child, or qualify for certain discounts that aren’t available on contactless.

For these cases, it would certainly be nice to have a digital Oyster card, but it’s only a small percentage of TfL customers that fit into these categories.
