Hi guys, sorry to bother you, but I still have some doubts and need you to confirm me that I've correctly understood how I should do.

Well, I got a 2014 Mac Mini mid "common" model, with a bad HDD and no PCIe SSD connector: my intention would be adding a 128GB PCIe SSD for running sotwares, OS etc, and replacing the common HDD with a 2.5" 2TB 5200 RPM hdd for movies, storages etc.

Now my questions:

1) It seems that there's no way to find (worldwide) a damn TR6 Torx Screwdriver with the hole in the center, but only an also rare but more common T6 Torx (like this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K82OHBI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8 ). What do you suggest me to do?

2) Does applecomponents.com delivers its products to Western Europe?

3) Will this object http://applecomponents.com/items/ca...-storage/0000006001?pn=1&cmp=0231&per_page=30 connect this SSD? http://www.ebay.it/itm/APPLE-OEM-12...?pt=US_Solid_State_Drives&hash=item259d9c484b

Thanks,
Thomas

Unfortunately no. Starts from T8 onwards...!

The one you linked to is the Security T6 you need (I know because I purchased it on Dec 16 for this purpose). Now how to get it outside of the USA is a question I can not answer. However, once you get a Security T6, you can also use it as a regular T6....

1., that would perhaps be the most cost effective way in the long run if you want PCIe on top of Sata SSD (Pcie will have a speed benefit, may or may not be humanly noticable)
The fusion drive is already made up of a 128GB pcie SSD and 1TB Sata HDD so not sure if you would benefit greatly from changing it to 256GB ?
The Evo SSD wont natively support TRIM if that bothers you ..

2. No idea lol

scoob,
But a Samsung 1tb SSD + a Pcie 128gb SSD would have speed benefits from a OEM Fusion (1tb HDD 5400rpm + Pci 128gb SSD)? Or is not noticeable?
If not, better stay with fusion and sell samsung SSD?

tks for the help.

I can only guess.. It should be faster for stuff that hasn't been "shuffled" on to the PCIe.. The Fusions drive is to try and keep the OS and apps(most frequent?) and files on the Pcie, and use the HDD for less frequently accessed files. and the same for stuff that is on the pcie (OS, apps, frequent files)
I'd guess you'd see an improvement for deep storage file access. (Dependant on use, / how much you have)
If it was my choice , i'd probably stick the 1TB drive in a USB3.0 UASP enclosure , and just fusion the PCie and HDD, which would give you 2TB of fast storage.. plus a lot easier installation, other users thoughts welcome ? , or try both and let us know the results :)

You can use a Trim enabler, believe you need to disable driver signing.
I meant OS native trim support.

Scoob,
1) have you heard about this SSD that offers native trim support?
http://www.angelbird.com/en/prod/ssd-wrk-651/

I saw many reviews that really works and looks really good but also pricey.

2)Do you thinks it worths to have a native trim or a samsung oem garbage collector or any other gc of SSD will take care of problem?

3) And Im little worried why are only angelbird that offers a native trim support... Could they lose this ability in near future when apple release new ios upgrades ao they can detect a third party hardware or they have some kind with agreemente with angelbird?

Tks again

Hi to all,
great thread!

Did maybe somebody found this cable on http://173.192.108.132/ or similar chines site?

I hope they will make copy. I see that you can buy PCIe SSD quite cheap from them. Does anybody try this "chines" SSD?

It's no better than any other quality drive.
It just spoofs the OS by identifying itself in its firmware as a genuine Apple SSD.
If they were an American company Apple's lawyers would have shut them down already.

scoobdriver thanks for finding the pcie flex cable. i will be ordering one and using a 512gb ssd from a 2013 retina macbook pro

This is very similar to what I'd like to do, once the cost of these bigger PCIe SSDs come down. Something that perplexes me though is whether or not a four lane SSD will work in the mini's 2 lane socket?

Anybody know the size of the screw that holds the PCIe drive in place?

I'm in need of one to complete fully, it bothers me that it's loose for the future.

Not sure, but every screw inside my mid-range model was T6.

I used this set, which comes with a security T6 as well as a regular T6. It's my go-to computer/iPhone etc screwdriver set! I highly recommend it.

i went through 2 sets of random torx heads and they didn't work because they poorly drilled the hole wrong. a set from the company boxer was the one i found to work..they sell it at frys electronics in a set for 7.99

Thanks for your help guys, sorry if my question was misread, I am just looking for a screw now to complete/ocd my install.

The SSD upgrade is amazing by the way, easy to install too, one of the plus sides of the 2014 model.

Surely you can just get a PCIe to SATA adapter and whack two SATA SSD drives in there.

And last I checked the PCIE connector was a proprietary Apple connector so there wouldn't be just "any PCIE to SATA" adapter... (Not to mention the connector would have to convert the signal from PCIE to SATA)

I can confirm the Tekton screwdriver bit kits have T6 security. I popped the bottom open with the help of the 2830 kit, which is also included within the 2841 kit.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HYVG6I/

I'm thinking I'll probably just find an external enclosure instead though. It seems it's a bit of a deal getting into the machine for the 2.5" drive, and a missing cable for a proprietary PCIe card.

I ordered the 076-00040 assembly a week and a half ago from AppleComponents.com. It's now on backorder and they don't know when they'll get it in. They're being reasonably cool about it, but in the mean time I'm sitting on an eBay SSD I can't test before the return policy expires.
