To me, the big takeaway isn’t glasses. It’s that Apple is getting serious about the smart home.
That part reads more like conjecture from Gurman, based on the upcoming tabletop device. More like something Apple needs to do in Gurman’s opinion. I wouldn’t expect too much.

Sure. I'm thinking of the initial photo taken.

As long as it's in my (iCloud) Photos, I'm fairly sure it's not going to end up in some form of profiling and/or commercial use.

With stuff saved in Meta apps (or Google, for that matter), I'm not so sure...

Very true. I was looking at from the other side, where someone can use the photo/video stream to id people and collect data without their knowledge, despite any privacy protections Apple or others may (or may not) have. It's nothing new and glasses can make it a lot less obvious.

While the same surveillance/recognition capability exists today with phones, glasses will allow it to be less obvious. Someone holing a phone and filming is pretty recognizable, while with glasses you may never notice and be able to move away. It's not a question of permission, but of capability.
Glasses manufacturers already take care to have a bright LED indicator when recording video or taking a photo. Once such glasses become widespread, people will become sensitive to it.

It also has interesting legal implications, for example how do privacy laws and data protection laws apply in situations like this, where you are simply aggregating publicly information?
Not any different from how they apply when you are recording in public now. Hidden “clothing button” style cameras have existed for a while.

Just for fun lets remember that some technology we cant envisage so to say this or that cant be real is true today but who knows.

However, again for fun you think AirPods or other in ear buds could have a forward facing camera? Love to see how silly those look :) - also the 'hair' point remains - someone with long hair blocks both side and forward facing cameras its all the same.

And yes, iPhone into a restroom is a social, and in many cases, legal taboo. You don't take a phone into the showers and start filming people - phones in locker rooms are very much supposed to be left in bags for this very concern. Adding a camera to another device be it glasses, headphones, a watch or a pin or a ring.... the Principal will apply to ALL of them into the future.
Just for humor: You wear earbuds in the showers? Wearing it in locker rooms sounds weird enough. Wow.

erm... we aren't talking about me.
We are talking about people with nefarious intentions who want to sneak recording equipment into locker rooms.
They exist.
Lets not make it too easy for them.

I want AirPods Pro with TouchID. Siri always want me to authenticate when I’m often asking something personal.

I mean, how dare you look at me and take my picture or record me without my permission? Privacy seems to have meant more to people 10 years ago.
We've adjusted to changing practical realities. I have a past history of working in an inpatient mental health hospital; when I started, one would NOT have entered the workplace with an obvious camera or video camera. Once iPhones and other smart phones came out, pretty much all staff had that capability on their person much of the time. There was a time companies could use monitoring software to police against much social media use at work, because the work systems where what people used to access the Internet (granted, a lot of workers did it, and mass firings aren't always practical, but employers had more control); then smart phones with data plans and the option to hotspot made private Internet access on demand open to most people, at work or in public.

If I want to take a photo of someone today covertly, and I don't need portrait quality, it's doable. There are compact cameras with high power telephoto capability (in excess of 1,000 mm); get one with a flip out adjustable read LCD, so you can hold it down and act like you're 'fiddling' with it, rather than hold it to your face obviously pointing it. Snap your photo.

The potential issues didn't go away, but expectations gave in to reality. As another poster mentioned, 'doxing' is a big issue - someone surreptitiously recording you in private conversation, then online publishing the video in an unflattering manner could get you fired, vilified, etc..., even if you didn't do anything wrong. Run afoul of an easily triggered 'cancel culture' contingent, and you could go viral before you know you're famous.

If AirPods can have cameras, I must rather that the Apple Watch first have FaceID capabilities before AirPods having cameras.

2027 means 2029. 5 years from now
With all of Apples patents we should be seeing better hardware sooner
Companies not the same

Nothing some paint won't fix or shorting out an led.

True, but such new tools add a new wrinkle, IMHO, in terms of data collection, analysis, data privacy laws, etc. The concept isn't new, but technology is greatly enhancing its capabilities.

Run afoul of an easily triggered 'cancel culture' contingent, and you could go viral before you know you're famous.

And given the current climate, the "easily triggered 'cancel culture' contingent" is found across a wide spectrum of beliefs, political views, etc. Doxing could become more of a problem.

Whenever I hear smart glasses the first thing I remember Google Glass which was released to the public in 2014, not to mention the lighthearted nick name wearers of Google's smart glasses received.
Exactly, what happened remember the stories about ppl getting cursed out in Cali bc the glasses had cameras and the stories about 3rd party apps that did live facial recognition in the streets? All Google had to do was wait 10 years and then it would be ok to come out with them? I just don’t understand how this is what everyone seems to want! The spa near me ppl were saying an employee was wearing what appeared to be the Meta Ray-Ban’s in the men’s locker room. And now those reports where Meta doesn’t have to say what it does with the images captured by the glasses. Smh

AR glasses will definitely be more widely adopted. Wonder how Apple will price its AR glasses.

I'm all for Gurman's product rumors, but I can't stand his Apple commentary of late.

In this particular newsletter, he first writes:

"Apple blew billions on a car project that it shut down earlier this year, and the company’s Vision Pro hasn’t yet proved that a face-worn technology can be a hit.”

But then later in the same newsletter goes on to say:

"The company has a stable base of revenue, at nearly $400 billion a year, but Apple can’t coast forever."

Well which one is it, Mark? Is Apple coasting or is Apple blowing billions on trying to find/create new product categories?

’to coast’ = To travel forward using only momentum (As opposed to growing)

I don’t see any contradiction in his statement.

If spending countless billions and taking risks in search of new product categories counts as coasting to you, what would not count as such?

Must be fun to be Mark.

Make up any old Tutt and say its a few years away with no repercussions or people picking him up on when its total fantasy.

Cameras in AirPods? really?
Has he thought about this Nostradamus level prediction?
How does this work for people with long hair? Those cameras are going to have a great view.
Privacy? Apple's main thing is privacy. Cameras in AirPods that you can wear to the gym and have on in the changing rooms/showers? Really?

This is one of the 'Gurman grains of salt' predictions that we get a lot of.
Surely the AR glasses with cameras is worse? Besides these devices exist already, ray bans for example

yes, absolutely so - as with the AI pin thing too.

Products are creeping onto the Market that pose significant privacy concerns and are open to misuse.

Arguably, in the changing room scenario, walking around with some AR glasses on tapping them or whatever to take a photo will be somewhat conspicuous and probably just as obvious as walking around with a phone taking pics.

The ‘coasting’ statement refers to revenue, not spending.
Besides, I am neither agreeing with it nor defending it, I am just stating that the two statements made by Gurman are not contradictory and therefore could both be true at the same time, if you believe them to be.

I’m hoping Apple will block people from taking videos and pics with the AR glasses in hardware, since they are all about privacy fingers crossed

I don't see how or why they would.

A device with a camera attached will probably have photograph or image capture capabilities regardless.

I believe they don't restrict in any way taking pictures using the Vision Pro - and although thats somewhat of an obvious device to be wearing in a locker room..... it's going to rely on regulations in individual establishments. For example phones are usually 'banned' from locker rooms although everyone has them in pockets or bags or lockers they are not really allowed to take them out and use them because of the risk to other customers privacy (although many will flout this 'rule')

If it’s blocked in hardware they absolutely can, it’s like a webcam’s recording light, this can’t be circumvented even when hacked. I believe this is a feature on newer iPhones

I bought a Pair of the Ray Ban Meta yesterday, I wanted something on the apple Eco system, But there wasn't anything. They were a little Pricey with the transitions lenses, But since my Healthcare provider paid for over half, I went ahead. They Paid $250 towards the glasses and Half the cost of the lenses, and they were on sale for $279. lenses $135, To be Honest with you , I would rather give my money to apple, and get a Product I know is safe, and plays well with my other stuff. But I did find Meta vision on the app store, they should arrive in a week.

I actually Hope apple makes them work Together the air pods 3 would be better sound then a set of glasses would, and you get to off load processing power, the i phone could do most of the heavy lifting, and the glasses having off loading most of the work, could maybe last all day. The only down side, is yo are shelling out for three products, But an upside for apple, is they would encourage sells, and reduce cost of individual systems. and redundant components and parts.
They nay even be able to have a package deal you could put on your apple card , and make it interest free for 18, or 24 months. And you could upgrade individual Components as they improve and come out at different times.
