save the ipad mini or alot of people won't be happy. :(
In the end, Apple isn't concerned with whether or not people are "happy", but where their money is going. If Apple discontinues the Mini, where will Mini fans go? There really aren't any viable 8" alternatives other than the Amazon Kindle Fire 8" (which is a bit locked down). That means that Apple expects Mini fans to either buy a larger iPhone or a larger iPad.

I'd like to think that Apple understands the importance of the Mini and produces an update soon.

So I guess today’s the day the mini 4 gets removed from the store.

Was a great form factor, hopefully Apple can get back to it sooner rather than later :(

I don't think they will update the mini with the iPhone's getting larger, there is rumoured to be a 6.5" iPhone this year and i think people are buying larger phone's instead of smaller tablets like the mini.

It isn't expensive enough…

Apple at this point would prefer to get people to buy a plus size iPhone and fill the same role all for a much higher average selling price.

Higher the price and stick a pro tag on. I and many others here would still buy it. All people want from the 'Pro' tag is pencil support and they just throw that away with this cheap ipad.

Apple listened to everything I requested in my original post.

Except the mini size.

Still waiting to see the details, but it sounds like a 2017 iPad with pencil support added, and price lowered. Same non laminated display, same cameras, touch id first generation.

I guess Apple needs to redefine Pro when it comes to iPad. Really IPad should be amended to always include pencil.

edited because as pointed out below, the processor updated from A9 to A10.

The 2017 iPad had an A9 processor

So let me get this straight...the new 9.7” ipad can use the apple pencil, but the mini 4 cannot. The new 9.7” has an a10 processor while the mini 4 still uses an a8. And finally the new 9.7” ipad base model only costs $329($299 for students) while the mini 4 base model costs $399? Lol. Right now all mini ipad users are screaming to the sky “Damn you Apple! Why have you foresaken meeeeee!!!”

Well, i guess our last hope is a miracle announcement of an ipad mini pro at WWDC in June alongside the new 10.5” & 12.9” ipad pros.

If nothing new for the ipad mini is announced at WWDC, that would be 3 yrs withhout an update and pretty much the end of the mini for good. Perhaps the rumors about a larger 6.5” iphone x plus coming in September will truly be the final nail in the coffin for our beloved iPad mini. Sigh.

I think you're correct here, this goes one of two ways: A "mini pro" device is announced at the refresh (probably with reduced bezels, maybe no home button) or the size is cut entirely. With everyone noticing the shrinking gap in features between the current Pro line and today's release, IF Apple has a mini pro in the works they would avoid releasing a cheaper update right now, as it would cannibalize future sales.

I'm actually more optimistic than I was before this morning's announcement.

It was clear that the announcement was going to be education-focused. The Mini was never part of that market. What is encouraging is that Apple produced an entry-level iPad with an A10 processor and support for the Pencil BUT NOT the smart connector.

This is exactly what I've been saying Apple should do with the Mini. This new iPad can be considered an "iPad Plus".

I think that there's a better chance (better than before this morning's announcement) that such a Mini Plus will be coming later this year.

You are right, there doesn't seem to be many options for smaller tablets. What ever happened to the Google Nexus 7? I thought that was going to do much better, especially with the low pricetag.

The nexus 7 had the perfect width for a handheld tablet. I always wished for a 4-4.5” width small tablet from Apple. Can also fit in a back pocket when needed.

Personally, I absolutely love the iPad Mini size and think it’s better than the Nexus 7 that I had. It’s perfectly sized for both function and portability, for me at least.

It’s big enough for me to be using right now on my recliner at home but small enough to fit into a cargo pocket and use in customer’s houses.

I would pay just as much for a Mini as a full size iPad, so I am not sure why Apple would discontinue it.

If they aren't going to do anything else with it, at least put in a new processor and keep everything else the same so we can at least purchase something that's fast again and will last many more years.

I just told my brother yesterday that if they don't update it then I'll be buying the new $429 iPad. I LOVE the size of the mini since I use it for reading, but I don't see the mini 2 working well on iOS 12 and I can't bring myself to pay $550+ tax for a 128gb mini 4.

The new iPad is $329, no?

I will probably end up getting that too, even though I would happily spend more on a new Mini.

Hah, came here looking to voice my despair over no new mini coming out and I find this thread right at the top :p

IMO the Mini format with pencil support would be the ultimate notebook. I hesitate to bring along a full size iPad to school but the Mini would feel just right. It's also the optimal gaming format for any games that require quick dragging across the screen, for which the regular iPad is just too big.

Hoping to see this before long. Can't believe the format isn't more popular.
