Just as I got rid of my watch, they finally release the ability to pause the rings. It's not making me go back to Iphone, but that was impeccable timing.

absolutely not. the biggest areas Garmin still had over Apple Watch after the last two years of significant improvements was:

1) lack of turn by turn directions for hiking with maps (including the ability to upload them in advance)
2) training readiness estimates (that show when you are over or under training)
3) alerts for health changes (that show when body metrics show trends from the average)

This update corrects ALL of those areas. it also adds things users have begged for such as day of the week specific ring goals or the ability to outright pause ring goals for days where you are sick or in no way able to meet the goals (International travel etc.) without ruining streaks.

I suspect blood pressure monitoring on the Series 10 and Ultra 3 (added to the new Vitality app) and a paid AI based coaching app (perhaps included with a Fitness+ subscription) are going to be introduced in September at the new devices launch keynote.

Lol the biggest area Garmin had over Apple Watch is the battery life, period. I've had a Garmin Epix Pro 2 for over a year and the body battery measuring is gimmicky at best.

I have no issues charging my watch.

Ok, this looks like Apple is moving into Garmin-esque analytics with the data that phone/watch captures. Raw data is already captured, but what does all that raw data mean? Well...I have my doubts about how accurate/useful analytics such as "training load" really is. I do have third-party apps that tell me this and I have not been able to make much use of that data to affect my actual training. It was that way long before I started using Apple Watch; it began with Garmin Forerunner where increasingly the data was used by Garmin to tell various stories about my health and/or progress. But I couldn't really make sense of how then to use the data to affect my training, but most of all whether the analysis is actually accurate.

well it isn't a negative and I do trust Apple to both make it as accurate as possible and simple to understand as possible. there is a rumored paid AI based coaching program that builds upon this that likely will be part of the Fitness+ subscription coming this fall that will integrate with the Apple Watch. I suspect this will be demoed with the new Series 10 and Ultra 3 watches (which will add blood pressure monitoring to the new Vitality app) in September at the launch event.

How about Sleep Tracking improvements?
Still better on the Android side?

I suppose for me I'm waiting to see whether this is positive or negative. I do have apprehensions about AI-based coaching. My most recent experience is using a paid subscription of Welltory which is more of a general wellness application that is AI-based or let's say more accurately algorithmically based, which all these AIs are. It's suggestions and analysis were really not helpful overall.

Last year WatchOS got quite a meaningful update. You can't expect a full redesign every year.
.. it did? Other than a control redesign, which I HATE, what else changed in a "meaningful" way?

Training load data on any device should be viewed as a trend. It doesn't have to be perfect it just needs to show you progress or lack of it.
Sure, that makes sense. I see a positive trend in my data analysis, but other than that rather simple analysis, an analysis that I can make just by knowing my own body and how much effort I feel when doing the same workout or how well I am recovery, what more is there to be gained from training load data?

I suppose this is what I mean: it seems to me that for the average person, training load data is an analysis we can make on our own. The question is this then: "so what" now that my phone is giving me training load data. I can see the results for myself and know how I am doing.

I have no issues changing my watch.

You mean charging it? I don't either, but to say the biggest leg up that the Garmin watch has is features is complete BS. The Apple Watch has way more features right now than the Garmin watch, especially integration with the phone and the cellular connectivity. Its the battery life of Garmin watches that draws people to them that just crushes Apple right now.

I have always viewed Garmin as over price for what it does.

Tim's watch shows elevation - I can't find out how to do this on my Ultra 2. Is this a new WatchOS 11 feature?

Will we FINALLY be able to choose our own ringtones and notification sounds? After 9 years and 10 OS updates, it's getting beyond stupid still hearing everyone nearby with an Apple Watch getting rung and dinged with the same sounds.

Meanwhile, the longest move streak is still a mess.
Why can't they simply just add 1 day each time it was completed after the day before? I can have 2370 2 days ago, but 2365 yesterday.
I am sure quite a lot of us have experienced this.
YEP!!!!! Only seems to update properly when another metric is achieved.

This has been around since iOS5-ish.

I've had custom ringtones since iOS 2 but it required a workaround by renaming a music file.

No, the biggest area is in the presentation of data. Apple Watch data collects lots of data, and dumps it somewhere.

Garmin actually does something with it. I use both watches and prefer Garmin. I can see my past 7 days activity, runs, walks, cycles, all totalled in miles.

i forgot to mention, Garmin waits till a GPS lock before you start the run, Apple Watch just starts and misses part of the run (I believe Apple Watch Ultra acts like the Garmin, why though? Surely the normal AW can do this).

Next is the actually watch when doing an activity, The Apple Watch is a mess and useless when running. The Garmin is so much clearer to see when running. Everything I need is displayed in one screen. Again, the Apple Watch has more data collection, but it’s awful to use when running. I really wish it could be updated.

instead, Watch OS 11. Some gimmicks and more pride watch faces.

I agree with the higher end models, but you could say that for the ultra compared to the standard Apple Watches. Does it really justify the extra cost, over what little additional extras you get,

Garmin is the same with the Fenix and Epix, in comparison to the Venu and Vivosport.

Do you customize the running workout to show the stats you want to see while running?

No. I have tried. It just lines if test that I can barely read. It’s bad enough when not running, but when running, it’s awful.

It would be so much better, split the screen in 4, bigger font, and just show time, miles, HR and pace.
