Hello guys,

the new display looks amazing but I can't afford it nor I need such a beast. However, do you think the tech will trickle down and Apple will release another display that is more for prosumers and doesn't have all the greatest but its more affordable? Or is this Apple telling us that we only do PRO displays now and others need to get an iMac if they want Apple's design.

Also, how long do you think it will take before the screen is discounted? $6999 with the coating and stand is crazy but if the price drops to $2999 I might consider getting one.
Is 2-3 years feasible or just wishful thinking?

Given the proposed quality of the Display, they know that as a product it will sell very well, dispite many of us laughing at the cost of the stand. Best bet would be to look out for it on Sale on Amazon or BestBuy where you might get it for $6K.

I don't think I want to buy it unless it drops to under $3k in the next few years. Apple priced me out on this.
However, really wonder if we can expect another display from Apple for wider audience?

From what I recall it appears this display in order to maintain its brightness levels heats up considerably in operation (said to include two builtin fans!) and probably eats a lot of power, way more than the usual. To me it looks like a speciality item and not something you'd want to run as replacement of regular computer monitors.

I suppose some tech will eventually trickle down into your average computer display.

I’m sure as micro LED, oled and HDR1000 displays continue to proliferate in the market over the next few years you’ll have plenty of attractive, non-Apple options.

I don’t think the display is going to see big discounts. Maybe a follow up 3-4 years from now will be a little cheaper.

No one knows if Apple will release another display, but there are plenty of other options out there. Including the Ultrafine series which Apple sells themselves in store.

It would be nice if LG released a new 5k or 6k Ultrafine.

the ultrafine was crap when released. Have they fixed all the issues? Safe to get now?
I was hoping to have Apple display if I'm completely honest but this PRO one is overkill and out of my reach (logic wise)

Then you need to look elsewhere. The Pro Display XDR is just not for you.

You can get 5K monitors using the same panel as the Ultrafine (LM270QQ2) for around $450 on taobao.

Of course its not for me, its too expensive. I would rather invest those $6999 into better Mac Pro config.
However, I will still need a good screen so what is a good quality screen these days, please?
The ultrafine was a disaster (27") but now there is new 24" is that better? I would still prefer 27" minimum (ideally 30-32) as I used to have the old 30" ACD and that screen was perfect. 24" is what I have at work (2x) but seems to be a bit small. :)
So, any suggestions, please?
Quality is important for me

I think the message is that Apple doesn't really want to be directly in the display business. Apple hasn't sold more than one model at a time "display" ( really display docking station) since 2010 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Cinema_Display). And frankly, the time most of the time period 2004-2010 time frame the only two displays wasn't all the more in number. At end of run the 30" was a comatose 6 year old model.

Since Apple is only doing one they are simply just selecting to do the "one" that hardly any other vendor is doing at the moment. Once the mainstream tech catches up to this they could very well drop back to zero again if the 3rd party monitor market is healthy enough.

Most likely wishful thinking. Apple just isn't going to make very many of these. That's one contributing reason why the price is so high. The run rate is going to be low. So when they folks stop buying Apple will just slow the production down. The notion that Apple is going to crank the production line at a high rate and have a warehouses full of these they have to sell at fire sale prices to get rid of probably won't happen at all.

IMHO, what may get is an iMac Pro with a 6k screen and a "normal" backlight. This particular backlight system is probably never going to be "affordable" ( the cost will remain high). Quite highly likely that nobody else ever adopts it. So since it is restricted to a low number of monitors it never gets dramatically less expensive. Apple may later move to something else from a more mainstream technology implementer, but as long as they are doing their own super high end, almost completely customer backlight it will remain quite expensive.

I don't think Apple is every going to do more than one "Display" at a time. They may keep this "outsourced" relationship going on with LG ( or move to someone else who is willing to put up with Apple's 'back seat driving' the spec on a display without their name on it. )

I'd be surprised if BestBuy even sells these in their stores ( same for most mainstream 3rd party Apple Authorized sellers. ). They don't carry $10-30K reference monitors either. Likewise Amazon ( as in "ships and sold by Amazon").

Some 3rd party resllers that overlap in the high end video business (e.g., B H photo , etc. ) may do this.

If Apple was smart they might have a system set up so 3rd parties could set up a "ship to " and/or "just in time" ordering mechanism where folks could pair up a Mac Pro order with a XDR without the retailer having to stock and inventory the latter.

Apple will probably 'blow' $3-4M putting these on display in all (or vast majority) of the Apple stores just for relatively ineffective 'show' , but again I'd be surprised if they were stocked in most locations. ( near a few stores where folks spend money like drunken sailors perhaps but 100's of stores without. )

Same for most of the Mac Pro line up now also. Most sane 3rd party vendors aren't going to stock those at some random strip mall in a mainstream location. If someone wants to order one they'll have it shipped in, but "joe schmoe " walking in off the street to buy one just isn't going to happen much at all.

If the display has been a 'bust' 3-4 years from now Apple will probably just stop selling it. Period. As for dramatically lowering the price. ...

https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/mac-pro

Apple is STILL selling the old as dirt Mac Pro 2013 at the same price point.

What may happen is some folks buy them and them dump them in 3-4 years as chase the then newest tech porn 'shiny' that they can't live without. There is always a few of those folks out there.

In about 4 years I'd expect Apple to churn out another "un-obtainium" monitor with equal "Buck Rogers" tech specs because XDR just isn't enough. More colors , more pixels and more , more, more. More likely, the curent one will be discontinued/superseded rather than discounted.

No one knows if Apple will release another display, but there are plenty of other options out there. Including the Ultrafine series which Apple sells themselves in store.

It would be nice if LG released a new 5k or 6k Ultrafine.

The latter probably depends upon where Apple is going with the iMac displays. The 5k model is coupled to the iMac as most other monitor vendors have dropped that size. Likewise it seems to look like only Apple has asked for this 6K display ( I haven't seen it pop up in the "what panels are folks working on lists at places like tftcentral.co.uk ) . So if it is never attached to a much higher volume product ( e.g., iMac Pro or something else) then it is unlikely LG would want to ship one.

With DisplayPort 2.0 and HDMI > 2.1 and the upcoming push to TVs onto 8K the rest of the monitor market doesn't look like it is going to track to 6k. 4K -> 8K is probably the path most are going to get on.

If that display is as good as they say it is and since you can feed it clean video signal from an SDI via a MacBook Pro, then that monitor will be sold by the thousands by professional filmmakers needed to correctly monitor HDR on shooting locations.

MBP 2019 15" and probably MBP 2018 15" ( particularly with the Vega 16/20 option ) probably should work. The mobile Vega GPUs that Apple is using are pruned down version of the same Vega foundation Apple is using in the upscale MPX modules ( similar display driver subsystem). Just need to couple the latest TB v3 controller to it.

Single digit thousands is relatively very low volume for Apple's Mac line up products.

The MBP withoutt a discrete GPU? No. Previous years MBP might work in a 8-bit color mode but that would help much for HDR. ( may have a GPU capable of DPv1.4 but the TB controller can't pass that through. )

[ also this is likely yet another context where the stand probably wouldn't be used as it not a mainstream desktop setup context. ]

I think Apple only wants to sell displays in markets where they can be competitive. And for the reference display market... this is certainly making a go of being competitive.

As the years went on Apple got less and less competitive in the consumer display market. They still made nice stuff but it just wasn't selling as well. And their consumer displays stopped being price competitive.

If these sell at a reasonable share of the reference monitor market (which is a pretty small market) I think they'll keep making them. And it's a nice way to try and convince people who need reference monitors to buy a Mac Pro.

The whispers were that the Ultrafine 5k was actually an Apple display, but Apple just didn't want to manufacture or deal with the consumer display market, so they handed it over to LG. I could see them maybe doing something similar with an Ultrafine 6k. They're probably sourcing their 6k panel from LG anyway, so just have LG do the rest. That even keeps the Apple branding away if people start asking questions about why one monitor has a stand and the other doesn't come with one.

I'm always irritated that Apple never supplied a display for its MacMinis. (That's also the reason why I'm still on the road with a late 2012 and their old 24-inch (best for me) Cinema Display).
Technically Apple could have integrated its Face-ID and first rudimentary gesture control into its own monitor a long time ago in order to distinguish itself from the standard monitor market not only by acceptable design.

Somehow, when I love my Mac, I want to recognize it as such. And I usually look at the display, and I don't like the bulkheads of LG etc.. Maybe a bit snobbish. :) But not the only one.

I think we’ll see a more affordable display come along with the iMac and MBP refresh. It will probably look like whatever the next iMac will look like and have the same resolution.

As soon as someone releases a standalone display driver with DP1.4 I will probably buy either some 27" LM270QQ2 (LG 5K panels) or 31.5" LM315QU1 (8K LG panel).

The current solutions are still DP1.2 and requires 2 DP cables for 5K, unfortunately. I'm not sure if MacOS supports Display Stream Compression (DSC) or how to enable it.

What's wrong with these?

Same monitor surface and chunky rounded bezel as the iMac 5K. That assembled component probably comes from the same factory. I use the iiyama with my Mac mini.

Yeah, those are awful displays. 6-bit + dithering.
For more serious photo/video editors perhaps. The overall fidelity (sharpness, contrast, brightness and so on) is wonderful, and the color reproduction is more than good enough for me doing software development and general use. Over the years, I've owned several monitors whose color looks obviously deficient and this isn't one of them.

Yes, an 8 bit display should certainly be “good enough” for someone doing coding, given a lot of people were complaining that the new display is overkill for coding. BUT, people are thinking of it in terms of “why am I stuck with an 8bit display, when an iMac has a 10bit display”.

Garbage, or unaffordable - the endemic choice for the Apple ecosystem.

6 bit color is just.... really not good. It’s literally 90s era monitor color accuracy. I’d have to do the math but I think that’s basically the old school “Thousand of Colors” fidelity?

Definitely not the same panel as the iMac. Not even close.

What panel is it then? According to the panel database, there have only ever been four 5120x2880 panels in existence: the LG QQ1, LG QQ2, a Samsung, and a Sharp (discontinued):

http://www.panelook.com/modelsearch...ow=2650&inch_high=2750&resolution_pixels=8780

The other specs listed on iiyama's site (brightness, contrast ratio, viewable area, ...) match the specs of the LG QQ1 panel exactly. That was the panel used in the 5K iMac:

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+Retina+5K+Display+Teardown/30260#s70955

Then there's the fact that the iiyama has the same seamless black surface/bezel, which even has the peephole for the FaceTime camera despite there being no camera behind it!
