Hello, first,i´ve been cheking the thread,my technical english is not enought to understand everything you post...so,and i hope i´m not doing bad, that´s my question.

I have macpro 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon---5 GB 667 MHz DDR2 ---1,1 2006 MP11 005D B08

Do i need to do something to install ATI 5770 or 5870?
I mean...if i buy it,mac version of course,do i need to do something to use the videocard with all of his features...

In case i can´t,can anyone tell me what video card, from 512 Mb to 1 GB,can i use with that model?

Thanks.

Welcome!

The 5770 runs perfectly in the 1,1 Mac Pro but we don't know yet about the 5870. We (at least 1,1 owners) are waiting to see if it will run with the most common form of BIOS (005D B08). We hope to find this out very soon.

Here's the hardware info for my new 5870 (in an early '09 Mac Pro):

ATI Radeon HD 5870:

Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 5870
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)

I have my 5870 running in my Mac Pro 1,1, and I did nothing special to do it. I originally had a 5770 also (easy as pie to get working), so I can confirm both cards can work in the 1,1 Mac Pro. Here's my hardware overview info:

MDP audio out works in Windows XP using the latest ATI HDMI Audio Driver, but I cannot for the life of me get MDP audio working in OS X. I'm guessing that the 2010 Mac Pros come with a special preloaded 10.6.4 containing the drivers necessary, but I'm surprised that the 10.6.5 update does not contain said driver(s). Anyvody that knows how to get MDP audio working outside a 2010 Mac Pro without using a 2010 Mac Pro OS X install, I'm all ears.

Squishy Tia you're my hero! I saw your post on OWC and commented on it! Thank you for letting us know. This is great news!! :D

 ...i´ve buy one this morning,running,100 %,well,on 10.5 5770 even don´t reproduce movies,10.6................................OK,everything goes fine:cool:

Just for clarification, The HD 5770 works in the mac pro 1,1 with bootrom version MP11.005D.B00, correct? (the first post does not state if the 5770 works, only the 5870 and I could not find via search anyone actually confirmed this)

I just got my 5870 in from Apple as well and it's working perfectly on my MacPro1,1 w/MP11.005C.B08.

What we need now is a method of getting MDP audio out working on non-2010 Mac Pros. I know it works on these cards (5770/5870) because I had it working in Boot Camp as noted in my aboce post.

 what the!!!

Don´t work, well,i just tested it with one game,but...5 minutes playing and the card has started to do weird things, maybe i´ll try de 5870...really don´t know, once i had this problem and it was with an ATI videocard,4870 in windows, maybe ATI is doing the same as Microsoft, they sell untested products..

I´ll try tomorrow and will post.

You're going to have to be a bit more descriptive than that if you want help. Not much we can do with a "it's broke! fix it!!" kind of statement. ;)

Fantastic news that the 5870 works in the 1,1 mac pro.

BUT!!!! does it run any faster than than the 5770 - specifically (for me) in windows?? Anyone got any comparison stats yet? Barefeats (using their strange BIOS) said it gave no performance benefits over the 5770 but I think they only ran it under OSX.

Hello Sqishy and all.

Better than a thousand words:

On 10.5 Video Card is recogniced by system but don´t reproduce movies...Vlc and system player at least..games,a few games i proved don´t run,STALKER,shadow of chernobyl and call of pripyat

On 10.6,Ok videos and i played fore a while, more than 10-20 minutes thought, really don´t take care about time but i was playing more than 5 minutes, just Call of pripyat, both games are ported from windows...all ok untill i turn on some advanced effects and put everything at high...

After that,reinstalled the game but...

Well those are the pics

I´ve readed ATI cards have problems on 10.6,don´t know but i´ve readed it somewhere

I had an ATI card that gave me the same problem, was on windows but was the same problem, buy it, install it and soon to be playing breaks, I changed it because it was a faulty set

I´m testing a few more games and will post if the problem was videocard or just the games...

Probably i will try 5870,as i know runs on my system

Thanks

It should in theory. But I'd love to know the same thing as well. Anyone have any stats?

The pictures show the issue, but what OS are you using right now, and how much RAM do you have?

Snow leopard, must be some option,i mean,i´ve been testing and playing and think is one option called SSDO or something like that...can play maximum but some options can´t be used at hight option...well,i´m adding textures mods and things like that, but is that SSDA or don´t remember now...a few more options in advanced can´t be used

What version of Snow Leopard are you using? There are five different updates PLUS a Graphics Update.

Got system updated so is latest 10.6.5,don´t know what graphic update you mean but i supossed is updated too cause i usually install every software updated...well,don´t use quicktime or itunes(i know ,i´m weirdo but is my way);)

Totally updated, latest updated installing now, java and safari, left some updated uninstalled cause dont use ilife,or wireless(in this mac got a few more) or iphone compatibility(i only use mac computers but no others products...

OFF TOPIC,don´t answer, please, lets keep moderators stay calm:well,i pad could be the future if S.Jobs and Team know a very basic premise...low down a little bite prices in normal equipment and very high price for upgraded ones...i saw, time ago,my friend shooting samplers, loops and making lives with iphone so ipad and a bigger screen could be,no should be,no,will be the future of computers, just a little tweaks and some connective ports, dvd drive and that´s all...is the only product from apple i think sometimes to buy it.

And please apple team, don´t make people buy unnecessary things, just sell computers with the things they need dont make us buy a mini display port,or don´t sell macs with 256 Mb videocards waiting users to buy a new mac cause they want just a new video card and things like that...

Well,to be true,i talked soooooo good about macs a few years ago,now a days i really doubt if they cost what we pay for them...always with little treats to sell old macs and making people want a new one in a year or two...a good mounted windows pc is nearly equal a mac...

My last pc was in my hands for seven years and was totally working when i give it as a present to my neightbourgh

It seems that the games you are having problems with on Advanced Settings are WINE enabled games. These games require DirectX for advanced settings, which do not port over in WINE well, if at all (depending on the game in question). In this case, it's a basic case of YMMV. Mac specific games should not display these anomolies.

5870

Bought a ATI Radeon 5870 from the Apple store on 12 Nov and received it on 16 Nov. I bought it for my Mac Pro 1.1, 2007. Installed it that night. Hardest thing was getting the old graphic card out - what a pain! Putting the 5870 was quick and easy though - thankfully!

I turned it on and it runs beautifully and quietly.

This is actually very well known. The likely explanation is that because the 5870 is a PCI Express 2.0 card, and the Mac Pro 1,1 only has PCI Express 1.0, that the 1,1 Mac Pros simply don't have the available bandwidth to push the 5870.

Barefeats was suggesting that all 1,1 Mac Pro owners pick up the 5770 as there is no real difference because of the bus limitations.

Then barefeats prove once again they are clueless. Bus limitations affect performance by 1-2%. 5870 can barely saturate 2.5gt/s. Check benchmarks.

what you mean with YMMV,i´m playing with the same settings as i did with nvidia 1900 and runs without problems, not the best graphics in the world but running...i´m testing what settings make those things thats why i ask you about YMMV

Tomorrow i hope can test it with last Modern Warfare, original and mac native
