Maybe Apple is getting ready to be serious about gaming? They also added Game Mode after all.

Apple could be serious about gaming, but gamers aren't likely going to expend what apple asks, specially when console games get a pretty good hardware at a very acceptable pricing, or PC gamer get a pretty affordable and expandable computer for a good amount of money.

They probably said this about Apple computers for personal computing back in the day as well. If Apple can bring superior performance to the Mac via AS, I think it can happen. Will everyone jump ship and get a Mac? Probably not. If you can’t afford or justify a premium price, you just can’t.

The eGPU support stopped at AMD 6 series. I don't see this gaming stuff being successful on macs. Gamers like modding the bios, overclocking, upgrading rams and gpu, a flexibility that doesn't exist with macs. Still macs are great for productivity and editing not for serious gaming.
I think making generalizations about what gamers want is incorrect without proper sources although you did at least say “I think”. I could overclock my GPU/ CPU but it runs almost all my games at ultra settings already, plus I just want it to work reliably. If we’re speculating about gamers, I would say that most of them just want it to work reliably so they can play and can’t be bothered with the effort of modding and overclocking. The majority just want to sit down and play their games.
