Yeah, I don't buy this. This would render all current Apple USB-C cables useless with the iPhone 15. And it's also against the new EU legislation. (Any USB-C cable must work)

Maybe they'll allow device to device pairing with this. I.e. USB-C speakers or headphones that connect to the iPhone.

This article will turn out to be false... the whole point of the change is to comply with the EU law. And the point of the EU law, is to use your old cables and chargers... not have to go and buy new ones. Surprised macrumors running with this crap.

Unapproved USB-C cables would still function for non-fast charging, so I don't know if the EU ruling would be satisfied.
But still this really sounds like a clickbaity rumour.

Easy. "Mr Apple, our EU customs authorities have confiscated your shipment of 50 million iPhones, as they were not compliant with the USB-C standard. The contraband is being destroyed as we speak. That will be a 20 billion Euro fine for the fraudulent CE marks."
I wish Apple would just develop the portless iPhone. I use wireless CarPlay via a dongle from Amazon and only charge wirelessly. Going portless would push the auto industry as well as third party designers to push their product designs. We are ready for the next iteration and can stop hanging back in the time of cords.

Here you go. Apple will limit output to a highly compressed form and probably incorporate DRM so that users can’t output video from their iPhone to a TV through USB-C to HDMI.

Still won’t even get to output in 4K despite this year’s iPhone probably having 8K video LMAO.

God they’re worthless.

You should be able to plug a USB-C to HDMI into your iPhone and TV and watch any video apps on your TV in IDENTICAL quality to how it’s streamed to a TV. 4K, HDR, and not blocking Netflix or other apps.

This way users could plug their iPhone into any TV anywhere and get perfect quality as long as they had cellular connectivity. No Wi-Fi needed. I have unlimited data like many do and this would mean you don’t even necessarily need to purchase a Wi-Fi service at all.

Hahaha... "hanging back"... "cords"... great post mate

Would get around the EU law (a regular USB-C cable would charge at 5 W, but an MFI cable is required for faster and/or data transfer and accessories), but it would also be a massive middle finger to the customers. Apple's sell to the average consumer is simplicity. As soon as they start making only certain cables work whilst others (that look exactly the same) not work that simplicity starts to fall apart.

Also, If Apple did this, then I wonder if technically they wouldn't be able to call it USB-C USB as it wouldn't conform to the standards.

Hmm...
iPhone 15 - usb 2.0
iPhone 15 pro - usb 3.0
iPhone 15 ultra - thunderbolt transfer speeds? 🤔
If 15 ultra gets thunderbolt, I’m pretty sure that it will have M3 (might be underclocked) and can be hooked up on a display and use stage manager

It's stupid from an engineering perspective, it's limiting for the user, it's the opposite of environmentally friendly and it's only serving their greed. Hope the EU will update that law, so we don't need to buy more useless cables.
Some marketing people don't know how to create value so they intentionally extract it in order to sell an expensive option that has it. Immoral and hopefully illegal one day.

You can just give away your Lightning cables when you resell or donate your old iDevice.
Or would you make the same argument for the old iPod connector?
You can do, but it does mean buying new stuff that you otherwise wouldn’t need. And like I said, for no actual benefit.

I doubt it. The don’t do this in the iPads like the article points out.
I think this might be a good point.

It would be a terrible move to implement this in the iPhone.
Bad point. Apple makes bad moves all the time.

this would kind of defeat the entire purpose of having usb-c.
Yes. Sounds like Apple.

Are they so eager to get an extra 30 from every customer?
Yes. Of course. Where have you been?
