This is what Apple does best, take an existing idea and build on it to make it better and more useful. There are already wireless earbud cases with displays on them. But Apple's going to take that idea to the next level.

Would be cool if something like this could just be your phone as well - for those times where you want simple functionality but not the distraction of a large screen (and for kids).
In other words, you want AirPods with GPS + Cellular? Which means you'll need a(nother) cellular service plan for it just like you do for an Apple Watch. At that point, why not just get an Apple Watch with GPS + Celluar?

And what is the point in this? If it came out in the iPod days over 10yrs ago it may have been a nice little device but with watches and phones it makes no sense whatsoever and it would be more battery drain that could be used for charging the earphones.

Rather than a touch screen you have to look at, I would prefer tactile buttons. The swipe gestures on AirPods Pro 2 are just too difficult and inconsistent to rely on.
Yeah, not exactly the trajectory Apple is on, looking at the iPhone 15, unfortunately.

What if this were just laying out the groundwork for an AR/MR headset to overlay a virtual touchscreen on the surface of the AirPods case and other devices, rather than including the screen on the hardware? The cost of adding a display doesn't make sense if 99% of the time it will be in your pocket.

„Sorry you can’t charge your AirPods because your screen is damaged”.

It’s really stupid idea. People have phones, have watches to control music, have voice assistant for it or even control in AirPods with Siri.

I don’t see a screen on such bulky thing

iPod with built in headphones actually sounds like a great idea, especially if it can also do tracking for workouts.

would cannibalise the single useful function of the Apple Watch though ...

Slowly, we're bringing the magic of iPod back... all we need is a clickwheel XD
I came here to say that. All we need is a little chip storing the most-played 1000 songs automatically and then you only need your AirPods for a jog.

We’re too lazy to use our watches to control playback now, then?

Cool cool cool.

A dusty old A9/A10, along with a 32GB drive and 2GB ram would do fine for that :3 It also would only cost Apple a few dimes or so for each one

They can't even make a device that has a proper charging port for the buds (that doesn't oxidate). Why they don't focus on things that matter?

Why? Although a small LED display for battery levels would be cool. But still totally unnecessary.
