I follow the patents and the ring has a lot of utility:
• patents indicate haptics, allowing XR to provide feedback
• more precise hand tracking in XR
• several patents indicate you can use multiple rings on both hands for various experiences. This somewhat implies a reasonable price (my guess is $99)
• it doesn't have a screen, the outer shell just rotates, there's a few patents on various ways to make that happen while being waterproof, and you can 'click' the ring (again a couple different mechanisms are being proposed). The patents all also talk about a 'jewel' component which appears to be removable. This may be how people can customize the appearance. There's a small air bladder on the side of the ring to stop the inner ring from spinning, and probably to get better health readings via compression.
• like the article says, NFC, notification haptic, sleep stuff, etc
• the main use case in the patents is for controlling other devices. Essentially, Apple is leveraging the accessibility tabbing logic to allow you to scroll to any interactive UX component. Kinda like the scroll wheel of old.
• Some patents mention that the scrolling resistance of the ring can be dynamically modified, as a form of feedback. This could have gaming applications, where the game can convey resistance to scrolling.

Extra:
• The patents for the Apple AR Glasses case indicates that the lid of the case could charge 2 small devices at the same time. Currently, the AirPods is the only small device with wireless charging. This strongly implies the glasses and the ring might launch together or close in time due to the ring's AR applications.

The only thing I wonder is what will the outside material be? None of the patents mention this. Glass/plastic/aluminum/silicone all seem too fragile for something that will contact many surfaces, but Apple's probably going to insist on making it white.

Hi there,

I never post, I don't have any social media, I don't blog, I don't comment, etc.

But I do appreciate you whom do - the comment section helps shed light on aspects that maybe the editors missed, or may have deeper insights on what this technology might do.

Unfortunately, out of all the comments here, only 3 were constructive / interesting (use it for payments, maybe instead of Apple Watch).

The rest mostly felt like some type of complaint. I feel most of you like me, grew up on Apple machines, since the 80s, and that you have a strong brand loyalty. I feel that many of you feel "betrayed" / heartbroken by some of Apple's direction. That' understandable - but these comment sections are feeling more and more like a complaint-section for people with lovers quarrels. It's just not fun to weed through all of this. I rarely step into this section anymore because of this echo-chamber of negativity. Please reflect on this. It's not fun for yourselves, for the rest of us, and is utterly futile. For that I suggest the editors launch macfury.com to address the needs for such complaints.

We all know that Apple seeks profits wherever they can, that they make errors, and so fourth, but compared to some of the other companies out there, they are good enough for us to be continuously using their products, and coming back to MacRumors to see if there is anything in our tech landscape that may change for the better.

With that, this was my first and last comment on a blog post ever. For the two people that may read it - make of it - whatever you want.

Farewell,
A dude that likes humans

Or....

Apple could just invest in making Siri not suck.

Or fixing 10 year old audio bugs with their computer OS.

Just saying.

I do wonder what their software strategy is... they don't seem overly fussed. It would be great to see a big re-launch of Apple Music, for it not to just be a sea of unused white space with tiny text, for it to not feel like a web-window (which his what is is really). For it to be a centre-piece of the apple experience (like when cover-flow was pushed).

Rabbit-hole consumer product development. Where does this end, Apple? Maybe smart Apple sneakers marketed as "iSneak? How'bout smart "iUndies"? Or, a smart belt that measures and reports waistlines called "iBelt" and would be accompanied with an Apple face mask marketed as "iBelch".

Hear me out - Apple has patents for using smart rings as VR/AR controllers. Rings packed with sensors and haptic feedback would give Apple Vision Pro much more precise input, potentially for games as well as things like typing on that Vision Pro keyboard that doesn't quite work right now without the feedback. IMAGINE: Wearing rings in a VR or Mixed reality game... you could pick stuff up with your hands, or point them in the shape of a gun in a shooting game etc.

My precious... shareholder value ring

BTW: What is it with AI and extra fingers?
Wauw! Excellent prompting there😉. As a tech nerd I want to see and try those ‘smart’ rings. No idea if the average consumer is interested, or if this is superfluous when you’re wearing an Apple Watch already. But I want to try🤓

As someone who wears an Apple Watch mainly for the notifications, but doesn’t particularly like wearing watches, I’d be interested in a smart ring that can provide haptic alerts. But I’m not totally sure I’d want to totally give up the Watch screen which I find useful for glancing at time, weather, and notifications including alarm clocks and timers. More ideal for me would actually be a smart band—more minimalist than a watch but should still be able to provide all the functions I need.

I wonder if the ring will have Siri with a speaker?

Apple watch do enough for humans...no need for a garbage ring...remember, for men the watch is the only "jewelry" allowed

Give it to your girl Apple Add a built in air tag so you can track him or her if they are unfaithful 🤣

The cRing will measure special statistics never measured before to determine performance.
