Rabbit-hole consumer product development. Where does this end, Apple? Maybe smart Apple sneakers marketed as "iSneak? How'bout smart "iUndies"? Or, a smart belt that measures and reports waistlines called "iBelt" and would be accompanied with an Apple face mask marketed as "iBelch".
iBelt could be iSkinny or iFat.. maybe flashing LED or notification when wearer moves between the two. 😉

Sounds like another product for a gold "edition" version.

Personally, while small wearables sound like a nice idea, I wouldn't want to wear something on my fingers. Also, how would it work? Siri? 🤣 (just woke up to four homepods not responding to siri requests - that stupid thing now can't even tell the time)

How does this work for sizing. As a jeweller, the biggest problem for stocking rings is that sizes vary, obviously.

What I find odd is how it has been happening all along. Everything else has been improving but the hands remain dead giveaways to AI.
AI already showing disdain for puny 5 finger organics. Like being able to go to 11 on an amplifier because it’s one better than 10, 6-finger terminators are superior… and the future…

“Take any of my 6 fingers if you want to live”😉

I would be all for this (an Apple Ring). Currently I wear and Oura Ring and the Apple Watch. I have a streak of closing my rings 2,338 days currently and would like to be able to maintain this streak while moving back and forth between mechanical watches and the Apple Watch.

I also prefer the Oura Ring for sleep tracking as I find the Apple Watch (Ultra in my case) to be too annoying for sleep tracking both from a wear perspective and a charging perspective.

I may be one of the rare people who would buy both as it would give me more flexibility to wear what I want, when I want.

I've wanted this for quite some time, but the Oura subscription pricing turned me off. I wonder what Apple's pricing model for it would be
The Apple Watch does everything this would do, and doesn't have any subscriptions. So I imagine an Apple Ring wouldn't either.

Unless they have something completely out of left-field planned; it looks like the ring would essentially be an alternative TO the Apple Watch for folks who don't want to wear a smartwatch (or don't want to wear a watch at all). I'm sure it would pair to your phone, like the Apple watch, and just provide data that way.

I would likely purchase an Apple Ring. It certainly falls outside of the traditional product categories that I would expect Apple to get involved in, but that said, Apple of the past 10 years has become a different beast from the company it was when most of us on forums like this became fans in the 80s-00s.

Apple has long copied product categories from other companies—compare iPod to e.g., Creative Nomad; iPhone to Treo, Blackberry, and the Windows Mobile devices. I don't chastise Apple for entering a new category after competitors—but what made Apple products good when they did launch into new areas was the meticulous work to make it dramatically better and easier to use than what was on offer. There doesn't seem to me to be the scope to do that with ring wearables except, perhaps, integrating it with mixed reality products (as has been suggested by another commenter).

I have stopped wearing Apple Watch after two iterations. I only really used it for notifications and Apple Pay, and occasionally cared about the health data. The notifications became too intrusive for me, and I got a Tapster contactless payment ring which is handy for public transport and paying at pubs, supermarkets, etc. I like my Tapster ring, and without streams of notifications on my wrist I now check my phone less often and more purposefully. I may get a Fitbit or similar for some basic health data, but the cost will still be so much more reasonable than forking out for a new Apple Watch every few years as the battery degrades. I'm enjoying wearing some nice watches I had collected before getting a Pebble smartwatch in 2012 and latterly Apple Watch.

If Apple Ring came out, there's a real chance I would buy it. I would expect it to have the following features if I were to buy it:
  • health data on par with Oura
  • battery life of bare minimum 7 days, but really ought to be 14-28 days
  • Apple Pay
  • Haptic notifications
  • ≤ $300

Custom orders from the one and only Apple Store at a one and only one Apple price. 💰💰💰

And if- in time- your finger evolves to a different size, you toss the old ring and buy another… or maybe they will ”recycle” a “trade-in” for you for 1/100th of what you paid. 💰💰💰

HomeKit feels so half finished. The hub HomeKit app itself especially. IT should be 'Apple Beautiful', it should have an amazing visualisation of your home and all your connected appliances.
Oh, yes. Tim got so mightily excited about it. HomeKit in part is just broken for me. It might not be obvious to those that have only ever used HomeKit, but it is awful compared to Alexa. Alexa isn't perfect, but it seems to have better integration and more support for devices across the board.

It clearly doesn't matter to them that they've sold an idea, which people have invested in, and they have now thrown those who have invested in that idea into the sea to drown while everyone fawns over floating VR windows.

I can only imagine how the patent war will go with these rings… with an existing company with rings already on the market.

No thank you got my watch and I know many men that work with their hands that never wear rings. Even a watch is too much of a hassle lol a cringe ring is too much ? What next the apple earrings
I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there are many other men out there that you don't know.... and many that DON't work with their hands in fact. And DO wear rings.... GASP!

Apparently the Oura has a sizing kit you can order. I can imagine an Apple Store sizing experience. The inside of the ring might be slightly adjustable, too?

My concern would be the metal it was made of. Too many horror stories about not being able to cut titanium or tungsten rings off in an emergency.

In the TV series “A Murder at the End of the World” all of the guests at the hotel were issued a ring that gave them access to their rooms. Seemed like a much better way to not lose your room key…

At the time I thought “oh, Apple should make that!”

Hi there,

I never post, I don't have any social media, I don't blog, I don't comment, etc.

But I do appreciate you whom do - the comment section helps shed light on aspects that maybe the editors missed, or may have deeper insights on what this technology might do.

Unfortunately, out of all the comments here, only 3 were constructive / interesting (use it for payments, maybe instead of Apple Watch).

The rest mostly felt like some type of complaint. I feel most of you like me, grew up on Apple machines, since the 80s, and that you have a strong brand loyalty. I feel that many of you feel "betrayed" / heartbroken by some of Apple's direction. That' understandable - but these comment sections are feeling more and more like a complaint-section for people with lovers quarrels. It's just not fun to weed through all of this. I rarely step into this section anymore because of this echo-chamber of negativity. Please reflect on this. It's not fun for yourselves, for the rest of us, and is utterly futile. For that I suggest the editors launch macfury.com to address the needs for such complaints.

We all know that Apple seeks profits wherever they can, that they make errors, and so fourth, but compared to some of the other companies out there, they are good enough for us to be continuously using their products, and coming back to MacRumors to see if there is anything in our tech landscape that may change for the better.

With that, this was my first and last comment on a blog post ever. For the two people that may read it - make of it - whatever you want.

Farewell,
A dude that likes humans

Well said!
Our focus determines our reality - why not focus on positivity and optimism?!

I find these rings pointless, cost as much as a smart watch, try to sell them on the premises of luxury metals, yet with a minuscule battery that will die after 2 or 3 years, but I guess you can wear it as a piece of jewellery then. Still not impressed if Apple just copies the market here.

Tracking your health and activity is pointless? Personally, I find them rather valuable

I'm in the market for an Apple Ring because I can't wear watches. I tried Apple Watch a few times and I was always getting massive skin irritation right underneath the sensor after a few days. Would only go away after 1-2 weeks of not wearing the watch. Unfortunate but a ring could solve this potentially.
