Very confusing.

Why Calgary?

A more sensible location would be Vancouver or Montreal. Just feels better to me. They're more cultured, savvy cities, so I assume there are more Mac users there. :)

calgarys got a big scene like that...
starbucks are poppin up everywhere.
stephen ave here is prime mac user spotting area.

CALGARY!!!! WTF!!!

OK maybe I am a little biased against Calgary, how about Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver first...more population that like macs...

Actually I don't want an Apple Store in Vancouver it would just take away business from the mac sellers who have been around 15 years struggling through the years and they would just get screwed by not being an Apple Labelled store.

Well, I agree that the stores that are here already, are pretty kind of slightly ok....But, I still want an Apple Store in Vancouver ASAP!!

I don't really care about the current resellers bottom line.....

Yeah, before your panties get too much into a bunch, please realize that Toronto already has two Apple Stores, one in Yorkdale and one in Eaton Centre: http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/

P.S. And just cuz they have more population, doesn't necessarily mean more that like Macs...

Ugh, when is Vancouver finally going to get one? I've been impatiently waiting for a quite a while, Googling every month or so to see if there's any more speculation on it. I'm not terribly impressed with any Vancouver dealers.

MacStation is nice, but it's still not an Applestore....

I have faith that soon we will get one....

The reason Calgary is getting a store vs Vancouver or other cities

Greetings,

For a few months my girlfriend worked at Cadillac Fairview - the firm which owns all of the retail malls across Canada in which Apple is setting up stores. (to-date at least). She provided me with an interesting perspective on why Apple has chosen Chinook Center in Calgary.

The reason Calgary is getting a store before other cities is Chinook Mall has become the BEST mall in Canada from a retail perspective. It is THE most sought-after location in all of Canada because it has the highest retail traffic of all the malls that Cadillac Fairview owns.

I know it does not make sense because Calgary's population is only 1 million - much smaller than Vancouver.

I believe the combination of Calgary's growing economy (the best in Canada - right now at least) coupled with a city full of well-paid white collar workers with lots of oil-stock options money driving a housing boom and general retail growth is the reason why Chinook Center is the prime spot for an Apple Store.

There are more head offices here in Calgary than any other city in Canada (even Toronto !). There used to be a time (way back in '89) when several large companies had Macs in their corporate enterprise (ESSO, TransAlta Utilities, TransCanada Pipeline, Gulf Canada). I think an Apple Store will do very well out here.

i think that sais it all.
its also the fastest growing city in canada at the moment,
so apple might see some potential.
i dont think it would hurt vancouver if they had on though.
i cant see it costing apple a lot to open one there.

Actually, a store in vancouver would probably cost a lot more than one in Calgary, simply because of the high real-estate costs.

Anyways, when Apple does open a store in Vancouver (hopefully soon), I hope it isn't a small store in a mall. The ideal place would be downtown, perhaps on on Granville @ Robson.

Agreed, That would be a great spot...cuz I could walk there !! yay!

I wonder how long we'll have to wait....doesn't Apple care that there is the booming film industry out here? All those people use Macs...

some day. :(

Actually, it is my pleasure to inform you that an Apple Store is opening in Montréal very soon, probably in September or October...I'm soooo excited, 'cause I'm probably gonna be there for college, and it'll be the first francophone Apple store, heh heh...there's more info on other threads elsewhere on MacRumors that I'm too lazy to locate for you

Alright, my friend says he read in the paper that the store will open next November. Anyone have some Calgary Heralds to back this up?

Location

Looks to me like a location has been picked for the new Apple store in Chinook. It looks like it will not be on the second floor, but instead on the main floor at the main entarance across from TD Canada Trust. Right now it is a Caban store, but they are finishing up a store closing sale. This location would be excellent for Apple as it is in a prime traffic flow area and has outside access with good visibility from a major road (Macloed Trail). I am looking forward to possibly being at the grand opening as an Apple staff member. Fingers crossed.

Store update

Driving past Chinook Centre today, I noticed that the outside awnings on the old Caban store (and future Apple store) have been taken down, and the inside gutted. The store is said to be opening in November and they appear to be on track.

Those pics posted previously are defintely not of Chinook. Here is the space in question, (ex Caban space). However it might be too soon to assume that Apple is taking this particular space, as Sephora is also opening a store in Chinook, and has similar space and profile requirements as Apple. Someone needs to go check it out next time they're at the mall, if they are demo-ing now the logo on the hoarding will be up ASAP.
