I like putting myself into Apple's hands with tech, and don't care if another manufacturer is doing something newer or better. I trust Apple to deliver to me what I need right now, and implement tech to the best of their abilities. That's the value for me.

That said, even with discounts, this monitor is still chronically, ridiculously expensive for what it is. It needs to be half the price. It raises interesting questions about Apple's pricing model when it comes to genuinely pro hardware. It seems somebody's decided high price, low volume is a way forward with things like the Mac Pro and, I guess, this. It's very odd considering Apple is a mass manufacturer.
I was never okay with the original price, and I like a good deal just as much as everyone else, but saying this monitor needs to be half price is not realistic just based on the materials and build quality alone. Half the price would put this monitor in the same category as all the other 4K (sometimes 1080p) monitors flooding the market, and I think this is a step above. Also remember there are not many 5K monitors out there at any price.

I think this monitor should have original come out at $1200 max with height adjustment included.

That’s your opinion. I 100% disagree with your take.
What's incorrect about it? You want it to be more expensive?

Samsung has a comparable 5K monitor which is in the $700-800 range when on sale. Sure, it doesn't have Apple's branding, but the display panel is the same.

The worst part of the Apple Display is the outrageous extra charge you've gotta pay for the tilt and height adjustment. That should be standard and I don't know how charging $300 more for that is remotely justified.

It doesn't make sense that you can buy an entire computer (iMac) with the monitor built in for less than this monitor which is only a monitor. Sure the screen is a bit smaller on the iMac, but it's a glaring inconsistency and just proof that the Apple Studio Display is massively overpriced.

I like the display, but somehow doesn't have the black levels of my far thinner macbook. The speakers sound good, but can never compete with the forward facing speakers that most of us will be pairing this with.

It just sucks that it can’t do at least 75hz. Just because you’re looking at photos doesn’t mean you also aren’t using the rest of the computer - scrolling text, moving windows around etc.

Makes absolutely *no difference* to me. If that's important to you there are many other brands that offer that.

It’s not overpriced. 5k monitors are generally in the same price range. They all seem overpriced because they don’t benefit from the mass production that’s made 4k displays extremely cheap. We’ve seen 4k panels drop in price due to huge supply, but that won’t happen with 5k, so they’ll always be more expensive.

Yes, you have the Apple tax for the over-engineered stand and mediocre webcam. Still, the fact that the Apple Studio Display just works when you plug it in, without needing settings, adapters, or a clunky gaming design, makes it great for anyone who wants a crisp display with native Mac resolution.

5K or not, a 60hz single input display should be about $1k max in 2024 (almost 2025)

This is basically a retooled panel from nearly 10 years ago

Yeah probably but it's still the best panel anyone seems to be able to come up with.

TBF by the time you add a wonky thunderbolt dock/charger, stand which isn't a wobbly POS and a mediocre webcam and some reasonable speakers to a cheaper monitor, you're down money on the Studio Display anyway and your desk looks like a snake pit.

Anyway they are really cheap. Check out how much reference / editing monitors cost. Equivalent 4k one with OLED will set you back at least $20k and an IPS one $10k.

You used to be able to get a whole iMac with this monitor for that price.

And you had to throw the monitor away every time you bought a new iMac. You have no idea how terrible it was watching 50x 27" 5k iMacs shovelled into a truck a few months back. They were taken away and shredded. If it was studio displays, it'd just have been the attached mac mini that was shredded.

The Studio Display is an expensive mid-tier monitor but it's also something that I will use for 10+ years so I don't mind the investment in quality. I would love to buy a 2nd one at a discount BUT I won't because of the webcam inside. It's absolutely atrocious they built a great display with a garbage camera. The LG UltraFine 5k has a much better camera.

The webcam works better than I look :)

I'm seeing the Samsung Viewfinity S9 on sale right now through Amazon for $599!
I have both displays. While the ASD is better (especially the overall build quality, the lack of power brick and the speakers) at twice the price it is a stretch.

The Ultrafine was an excellent display. It didn’t deserve the hate. I used mine for years before I upgraded to the Studio. I do feel like the picture on the LG was sharper, which might be do to the lack of a cover glass. I don’t regret upgrading, but for the time the LG was one of the best monitors out there.

Samsung has a 5K monitor with the exact same panel for far less money, so why buy this exact one if not for the Apple logo?

I wrote one of them ;)
It has its faults, but at that price it is a good deal as the panel itself is very good. Again I have one of each.

BTW - just went back up..

Show me a comparable display under $1k. Don’t say Samsung because they don’t have one that’s actually in the same league.

The Samsung monitor is trash. Garbage speakers, finicky stand. I bet the panel isn’t the same either.
The panel is the same. And yes, the speakers may be garbage, but the Apple ones aren't that much better. In fact, that goes for pretty much every display or laptop speakers. I wouldn't ever use them besides for a short video every now and then.

Problem with this beautiful display is that there is not enough competition in the 5K display space.

I agree the price is very high but apple gets away with it because of the lack of enough alternatives.

I would like to see Mini LED and 120 hz at this price point. And a better camera
