Samsung has a 5K monitor with the exact same panel for far less money, so why buy this exact one if not for the Apple logo?

Read some of the Samsung 5K display reviews on Samsung's and Amazon's websites - they're pretty bad. No thanks. Apple's is a joy to use. It's about more than just the panel.

If you're not into photography and are not fussy about reference modes, color, and consistency, by all means purchase the Samsung display and save a lot of money!

I've also heard bad reviews about Apple's one. Does that mean it's bad as well?

Are those reviews from photographers who actually process image files daily?

I get it. You love your Samsung display and saved a lot of money. That's great! I'm happy for you!

I don't know why the ASD upsets so many people. I have two - pretty much the best monitors I have ever owned because of the improved quality of life issues.

It integrates beautifully with MacOS with no weird glitches like I get with other brands such as random wake-ups or disconnects. It also color matches my 14" MacBook Pro Display perfectly OUT OF THE BOX - I can't tell you how much time I waste futzing with other monitors and still not had them match (except maybe BenQ). Webcam is totally fine for Zoom/FT calls. And although not HDR, it I brighter than more HDR monitors out there.

I use it for productivity. If you're a gamer look elsewhere. This isn't for you.

The only issue I have ever had with it was that it was expensive, but after I swallowed that pill, it has been a stellar experience. They go for about $1,000 on the used market, so I picked up a second one a couple of months ago.

Now just because it was expensive doesn't make it poor value. The other 5K options don't compare and 4K vs 5K is noticeable with MacOS because of the way Apple renders the display image (they really ought to fix this because most people can't use 5K monitors).

Spot-on, on all counts.

When I purchased and received my ASD two years ago, I was concerned about the hassle of calibration using my colorimeter.

As it turned out, one of the built-in ASD profiles was dead on perfect. Whatever image I'm processing on screen in LR is what comes out of my Canon printer. First time, every time. No more futzing around with display calibrators or needing to make multiple prints to get it right.

"I don't know why the ASD upsets so many people."

People here love ragging on Apple. Every day of the week. For 20 years. My guess is it feels good and somehow feels empowering. That's something I'll never understand.

I don't have that display, so I'm not sure what you're on about. I'm just saying I've heard bad things about both.

But I get it: you love your ASD and don't mind spending too much money. That's great! I'm happy for you!

OK. You have no personal experience with either display, though you automatically pass negative judgement on Apple's, while not even understanding why photographers like it so much. All the while praising Samsung's.

Nope, don't love it being inanimate. But I'm stoked every time I use it for processing image files and making photographs.

100% agreed. I had two of the original 5K LGs for about 10 years and 60hz is just so painful.

No clue how people do it

I was visiting a relative last weekend and helping him on his Mac Studio + Studio Display

Felt "muddy" or something

Wouldn't trade it for my 120hz 4k OLED for anything

You really can't go back from high refresh rate (or OLED!! -- everything is GORGEOUS)

Sometimes I think Apple might as well exit the monitor business. Its products are seldom updated (the Pro Display is 5 years old, an eternity in this industry), too expensive, and badly rated for any type of geek usage (gaming, HDR, creation). It seems as though monitors are an afterthought for Apple, whose main focus is clearly elsewhere. Competitors offer much better value for money and come up with new, improved products all the time.

Apple is targeting their 32" 6K 1,000 nits high contrast Pro Display XDR to professionals. Not consumers for geek usage.

I agree
There was a time for them to be in it, but it's long since past

The way they put stuff out there and let it twist in the wind just totally sucks nowadays with how fast the tech moves

Is there another professional display that has moved beyond Apple's 32" 6K 1,000 nits high contrast Pro Display XDR for $5K?

If you could name a few that would be great.

It’s not overpriced. 5k monitors are generally in the same price range. They all seem overpriced because they don’t benefit from the mass production that’s made 4k displays extremely cheap. We’ve seen 4k panels drop in price due to huge supply, but that won’t happen with 5k, so they’ll always be more expensive.
You're not wrong, but I'd rather ask *why* a 5K display is needed.
  • editing 4K content + space for the UI - good reason
  • other uses but macOS still doesn't handle fractional scaling - less good reason
There is little competition for 5K monitors simply because no one else needs them. There just isn't enough demand in a Mac-only market to fill a niche market with many products. Apple could fix this problem by improving support for fractional scaling (not just 2x for Retina)...

For people spending a lot of time processing photographs in Lightroom or Photoshop, if you're picky about color and insist on consistency, there is no better display (unless you want to pay the $$$$ for the Pro Display XDR).

It certainly isn't for gamers or general computing. Sadly, many here will never take the time trying to understand the above and will complain till the cows come home.
Yep! It seems pros don't exist in the MR forums 🙃

I would tend to agree. I suspect most professionals are adults and act professionally, and not being into hurling Apple (or any other company) burns everyday.

The panel is the same. And yes, the speakers may be garbage, but the Apple ones aren't that much better. In fact, that goes for pretty much every display or laptop speakers. I wouldn't ever use them besides for a short video every now and then.
The speakers in the studio display are FAR better. It’s laughable how bad the Samsung ones are. Better external speakers are $100’s of dollars. Don’t forget your crappy plastic enclosure with crappy over molded stand that wiggles when you bump the table. The better quality may not be your thing, but you can’t claim it’s the same.

Still not worth it...
Stand with ZERO adjustments without paying extra (wtf??), subpar screen tech for this price range (IPS), 60hz instead of 120hz, bad response times, low HDR brightness

They should make the XDR 120hz and the Studio too but with 4K/5K res instead of 6K
