Anyone else's Studio display brick itself after your laptop updated to Sonoma? I was going through other forums and it's happened on other updates to Ventura but just wondered if anyone has experienced this after any OS update and how did you fix it?
What is it doing? My issue wasn't after updating the Mac itself, but rather trying to update the software on the ASD itself. Mine would display a warning symbol and a URL for restore mode.

I got the logic board replaced at the Apple Store.

Did Apple disable the "fake HDR" that the ASD has after upgrading to Sonama?

I notice I can't see photos and videos in HDR anymore on mine. The checkbox to turn HDR on and off is missing when connected to the studio display. It's still there when I use the MBP's own display.

Wondering if everyone is seeing this or if I fudged up some setting that made it go away. It didn't look all that great sometimes, cranking up the backlight so you'd see a lot of bleed in dark areas of the picture, but I'd rather just be given the choice to have it on or not, rather than it be taken away.
ASD isn't HDR capable at all, so there should not be any option to turn it on. If you've seen it somewhere, that means that it was a bug and it was fixed.

But your MBP's display is HDR-capable, though. So there's an option to turn it off.

Hi,

Can anyone with the tilt-adjustable stand give me the distance from their desk to the bottom of the monitor case please?

My Display will not go to sleep. If I put my Studio to sleep the display will just go off for a split second and come right back on and it will stay on 24/7. Under energy saver settings I have it set to go off after about 5 minutes and I only have the middle checkbox set under the Energy Saver settings. Is there something else I need to do? Thanks

I have been super satisfied with mine. Not cheap, but that's what 5K displays cost. Even Samsung's isn't much of a comparative bargain.
Same. I held off due to price but now I get the price. I come from a buggy LG 5K ultrafine and it's a huge difference. ASD is more vibrant and has near oled level viewing angles. People who say its the same panel have never used both.

I paid 1400 EUR for the basic tilt stand model. Way I see it, it's 1000 EUR for a high quality 5K panel plus another 400 for design, metal casing, awesome speakers and reliability. Completely fair in my opinion.

100%. I also noticed some wobble with my LG when I was typing sometimes.

I went from 2 x LG 2560x1440 (non-Retina) to an ASD and 1 x LG 2560x1440. Both are side-by and the difference in clarity and visibility is night and day.

Does anyone have two ASD side by side, one with standard glass and the other with nano?

If so, is there a marked difference in screen brightness or some other characteristic that could make it a jarring experience?

I got my nano-textured glass replaced recently due to an issue with a mark on the screen that started appearing out of nowhere and I believe they've improved the process of making the glass.

While I don't have a scientific way to measure this, I feel the viewing angles have improved, diffusion of light is even better, and the amount of "fuzziness" when looking at sharp text has reduced even further; So much to the point where I have to look very carefully to notice any.

I don't have 2 displays, but I am in a well lit room with 2 bright fluorescent tubes above me and I can get by comfortably with brightness up at 65% at night and around 75 - 80% during the day.

I'm very happy with the replacement and loving it even more.

You really like the ASD? Did you get the Standard glass or Nano-textured glass?
Standard.

The ASD picture quality is much better than the LG (not an UltraFine), sound and camera are both great for Zoom calls etc.

Having both side by side is interesting, much sharper and clearer with the ASD.

The picture quality is very underrated. MacRumors believe $900 gaming monitors are better, but I did actually test the 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro mini-LED display against computer displays and the 2 displays that came closest are the Pro XDR and Apple Studio Display.

And then the question comes, do you need HDR?

Since I have a home theatre setup at home, I really don't care about HDR on a computer screen. I use a computer screen for WFH and not for watching HDR movies (since I have a home theatre setup).

HDR is a good thing to play games in my case, but that's not a deal-breaker.

XDR displays have their specific backlight construction that makes HDR possible, but also they have a real black color - thanks to mini-LED technology. So true black color is what I'd like to see in ASDs.

That’s a great photo and setup, thanks for sending me the link!

How do you have the screens mounted/hung etc?

Thanks!

They are wall-mounted, on an Ergotron HX Dual:

There is a desk clamp version which I have also used.

Has anyone else had a nightmare of a time with repairs on a dead Studio Display? My display died back in September and Apple has been unable to fix it and unwilling to replace it. One day it went blank and stopped doing anything besides charging my laptop.

The first time I brought it to the store, they held onto it for a week and did a software revive. It worked great for about an hour and then died again.

The second time I bought it in, they kept it for four weeks while they put in a new display panel and logic board. Apple agreed to waive the costs, but it they hadn't, it would have cost $1400. It seemed ok for a couple of days until I needed to use the camera, which wouldn't turn on.

Before visit three, the phone support rep told me that the store would replace it for me, but when I took it in they refused and insisted that they had to do another repair instead. Now it's back for another 7-10 days minimum, even though it is clear that they have no idea how to fix it and already wasted five weeks trying. The bill for this second repair, which I am also not paying, is $1300.

Am I crazy for thinking that six weeks without a resolution is totally unacceptable? Is there some other level of support I should be trying to reach where the helpful people actually work? I've talked to so many different people between the phone and the store but nobody has been able to offer me anything besides waiting for yet another repair attempt.

Wow, that sucks. I had to have my logic board replaced because the ASD would get stuck when I tried to update the software. But the repair worked.

Have you dug into the details of your Applecare policy to see if it has any details about when/if you are supposed to get a complete replacement instead of repair?

I didn't buy AppleCare because I figured, it's a monitor, it never leaves my desk, when has a monitor ever stopped working? They did the repairs for free anyway, but it theoretically would have cost $1400.

The answer is they need to repair the hardware at least twice before they will replace it. Technically they only did one hardware repair.

Having gone through this I absolutely plan to sell the monitor when I get it back. Ideally they'll screw up again so I have a new in the box unit to sell. Even with AppleCare there is no way I would want to own a monitor that might die in the future and cost as much for a repair as a new one costs. A monitor should be a 10 year purchase and this aint it.

Sorry to hear this. I'm with you that I would fully expect a monitor to last 10+ years. Honestly I've never had one break. I returned one Dell because it kept flashing on and off but it did this day one.

FWIW - if you are looking for a high performance alternative to the ASD, I'd strongly suggest the Dell 6K. Now that it works correctly with macOS, I'm all in on it. I love mine. I'd rather have a 32" ASD, but that doesn't exist and likely wouldn't interest you!!

Yikes.
I'm glad I got AppleCare for mine. Probably will end up being unnecessary, but had I not bought it, I'd of course need it. Since I have it, the displays will never break.

Same here. In fact I have dual Studio Displays with AppleCare+ on both.

I'm not proud of my thought process, but when I considered just having AppleCare on one of them (as unlikely for both to go bad), I literally thought "that didn't turn out too well when they decided to insure only one of the twin towers".
