I can also hear that noise, but only at the back of my ASD. Sitting in front I don't hear it.
Could it also depend on how much power the MacBook is drawing?
@KandiMountain let us know what Apple tells you. I am also based in Germany.
Spent the whole day in chats & calls with Apple Support, still going on… I‘ve been told „it‘s normal“, I was asked to bring it to an Apple Store to check out, then finally was allowed to upload a video and was asked again to bring it to a store to repair, until they finally realized I bought it directly from Apple and am within the 14 days after purchase, so exchange might be an option. I was forwarded to the colleagues managing exchanges only to learn they aren‘t working today and the call was ended. ?‍?

Hoping I don’t have to start over completely with the next person I speak with tomorrow…

Don’t get the Apple studio display. There is a major fault with the power supply. I’ve been through 3 of them all with the same issues. Loud buzzing sound coming from the top of the monitor when the brightness is below 2/3rds full. Video link supplied:

I think Apple is aware of the issue and it appears they have pulled all the stock in Australia. I can’t find it anywhere.
Thankfully mine does NOT have this issue. Hope you get it taken care of.

Hey mate.

So when I got my hands on the 3rd screen with the same issue I went through apple care and jumped through all the support hoops they had. I ended up speaking to someone at the apple headquarters in Austin Texas USA (6am in the morning sydney time) and all they could do for me was to take it into my closest apple store and send the monitor away to be pulled apart and investigated. Apple couldn't guarantee when they would be able to replace the monitor or even be able to fix the monitor. So I decided to take the monitor back to Harvey Norman (Australian shop), get my money back and now Im using the LG ultra fine 5K Monitor for Mac, which has zero problems.

This is very upsetting, Apple knows there is a problem with the 240v 50hz version of the monitor. Every single apple store in NSW has Zero stock. They have all been pulled, and I feel sorry for anyone who has bought this monitor. If I was you I would take it back and get your money back and wait till apple fix this issue.
This buzzing problem isn’t limited to Australian displays - it’s also present in 120V, 60 Hz USA models.

This buzz is not normal. Apple put inadequately sized filter capacitors In the power supply of the studio display, and combined with the pulse-width modulated fan control circuit allows RF electrical line noise to interfere and cause an audible buzz in the fans. It is a design flaw that will require a redesign of the electronics. This will not be a quick fix.

I have not noticed this. Perhaps it is an issue with specific models, or specific setups (e.g. use of UPS)?

I will be returning mine because in the end I prefer the iMac 24" in my space (I was undecided earlier this week). But for the record, no buzzing of any kind here, or noise for that matter. US stock, ordered at the event, received on release day. 15.4.

Does this kind of thing harm the longevity of the display or is it just a noise nuisance issue?

Mine only buzzed when my house AC was running. If the AC was off, the display was quiet. But I can't reasonably remove the AC in my house, and no other electronics buzz when the AC is on.

any idea if this will happen with a window unit AC in the same room as the display?

FWIW, I have two wine refrigerators on the same circuit breaker as my ASD and have not noticed it. I can’t easily connect it to the same circuit breaker as my window A/C heat unit (and I’d be using heat this week).

Looks to me that this buzzing could be caused by DC offset. If that is the case, an Emotiva CMX-2 could easily fix this issue as it has a DC offset eliminator filter. DC offset is mostly caused by dimmers, fluorescent fixtures, Brother Laser printers and small appliances in the same circuit as the equipment showing humming or buzzing noise.

I just did a normal system software upgrade of monitor to "firmware" 15.4 and the monitor bricked itself for over 15 minutes with this on the screen:

See https://support.apple.com/display/restore

Reset everything and waited for a while ... the MacBook kept trying and eventually the upgrade succeeded.

I know there are two fans in the display. Can you hear the fans running in a very quiet room?
I only hear them a bit when I put my ear directly at the top of the display, and even then it‘s rather the sound of air moving than actual fan noise – bit hard to describe, but definitely waaaay more silent than my 2018 MBP fans, and it doesn‘t bother me at all (though I‘m usually pretty sensitive with sounds). I‘ve heard reports of louder fans though, so maybe again a matter of luck…

Exactly my experience.

While I´m waiting for mine, I started to think it´s a lot of money for... a display.

I´m using a 4K Dell for graphic design and is really good, to be honest I miss my old iMac 5K screen.

Maybe the LG 5K is a good idea, it´s on stores again here for 1200€ (vs 2200€ for the ASD with height adjustment stand). I don´t care about speakers or webcam, the ones on the MBP are OK for my use. Do I care about the aluminium body and overall look of the ASD? well, yes, but worth it 1000€ over the LG that gives me the 5K resolution? mmm I don´t know...

Soo, finally reached After Sales Support. They offered to send me a return label and to prioritize my replacement (regular orders are now scheduled for end of June(!)). Getting the replacement first apparently is only an option for computers, not displays. Now I‘m torn – I need a display for my daily work and there’s no guarantee the new one will really arrive soon and, more importantly, that the issue will be fixed (and it doesn‘t have other issues)… ?
