You're trying way to hard to disprove something initially declared to be a fun rumor on a rumor site forum. And btw, almost everything you said so far was wrong. Retailers inventory has historically been indicators to a product refresh. The store links you created are NOT for new/available products. And using big words doesn't make someone sound like an expert.

This is incorrect.

Years ago I worked at both Circuit City and Best Buy and we'd see fake model numbers pop up all the time for stuff, and then disappear later.

What these are are inventory spots for a speculated item. It doesn't mean the item will come out, but if it does there is a spot for it already. I can't tell you how many times I've seen new camera models, computer models, tv models, etc pop up in inventory but sadly never actually arrive.

Well Apple has had code in their software for a 3.1 ATV since last fall..Still say something is coming out momentarily

What year? Apples partnership with Best Buy is a lot more controlled than it was prior to the "Apple Store within a Store" initiative.

This was 12 yearish ago. I wasn't stating Apple products specifically, just products in general. It happens all the time regardless of brand.

1999? So am I really "incorrect" or are you outdated? (I'm kidding)

I'm not arguing, I'm just saying that RECENT history tells us that it means something and Ive managed to use these trends to sell my Time Capsule, iPad 1, several MacBooks, the iPod Touch and numerous generations of iPods at maximum dollar and it always worked out for me. And currently I just dumped my iPad 2's ($550ea), AppleTV2 ($96), Roku ($76) and my Time Capsule is now up for sale.

Maybe this one instance updates won't happen but I'm not sweating it. It just seems like the right time for a refresh.

yes, it's gone

I went to Best Buy with my mom to get her an Apple TV this weekend, thinking they'd surely have them in stock. Gone from ALL regional best buy stores. Update is imminent!

I'm not saying here might not be an update, but Best Buy's inventory isn't necessarily the indicator I would use (in bold no less). An update is "imminent" if you have an elastic definition of imminent. Like the next 18 months. Remind me I said this if they announce a new ATV on. Tuesday. :)

I've been watching this thread for a few days. I honestly don't know why anyone feels the need to say "This isn't a good sign of an update".

  1. Even if this way the only sign, and its not, this is a RUMORS website, people speculate on rumor website, MacRumors, Canon Rumors.. thats what people do.
  2. For the last 2 years that I've been on this site, lack of inventory HAS been a decent indicator. I hasn't been perfect but there absolutely HAS some correlation. Not 100% but again, it's been a decent indicator.
  3. For a "rumor" website why work so hard to prove some one else wrong, we all know that this is peculation, if you think that it's wrong, just move on with your day. Only time will tell.

what features will it have? Will it be an actual tv?

If, and that's a big if, there's a new aTV announcement alongside the iPad3, it's because the aTV fits into some part of the iPad3 ecosystem. There's really only three main points of overlap: iOS, AirPlay, and 1080P.

(the first two probably count as one, unless the hypothetical new AirPlay feature requires dedicated onboard hardware).

1080p & hulu

Hulu is my only complaint about AppleTV. But I guess what I'd ideally want to see is a limited app store for channels. ABC.app, TNT.app, HBOGo etc. Even if they would charge a SMALL fee per month, an a la carte menu of channels we actually watch through AppleTV could be a lot cheaper than most of our $60-120 cable bills.

This. This is what could really make the apple TV for me. I've never pulled the trigger on one, and the AirPlay in Mountain Lion is probably the thing that's going to make me get it, but if it had apps, that is what would make aTV legendary.

Along with that, I'd really like more sports options, but with the complicated rights contracts make some of them difficult. But seriously, if they could get college football and basketball on the aTV, how awesome would that be?

My gripe with Apple TV too, lack of Hulu. I hope a software update or Apple TV 3 will have Hulu.

They just showed up on the refurb store. I just pulled the trigger for my second unit. Starting to have a bit of buyers remorse, but if a new one comes out at the same price point, I'll have to evaluate the features to see if I should buy. Hulu and 1080p won't do it for me. Apps might though.

Not my problem nor my argument. You'd have to have that argument with whomever wrote that article; presumably Arn or Erik.

My argument is that MR uses the same information that the OP used to speculate on the future of Apple product refreshes.

I think the only one getting excited over anything is you. No one who has posted in this thread, thus far, seems to give a damn about purchasing the latest Apple TV product. Only that one may be introduced in the near future.

This story from today's front page reminded me of this thread:

Best Buy Preparing for iPad Updates With $50 Price Cut, Inventory Cuts

Potentially signaling its belief that the launch of the iPad 3 is imminent, Best Buy is now offering $50 discounts across the entire line of iPad 2 models, with pricing now beginning at $449.99 for the 16 GB Wi-Fi model.

There is definitely something going on.

I went to Apple.com to check out the Apple TV..

Here's what I got.

They are showing "In Stock" at my Apple Stores in my city. I got one this past weekend. It was a lot on the shelves. But next week, they will probably announce ATV3. I'm debating if I will take my ATV2 back that I got a few days ago. The only thing I'm worried about is, it taking months to be jailbroken. I will probably stick with my ATV2 and wait on the ATV3 JB in a few months, then sell my ATV2 and use that towards the new one. I have no interest in a Non-JB ATV.

Edit: Two stores near me say, "Available Mar 2."
