about the alias' VIDEO_TS post above

To clarify.

I know that the ATV can't connect to a network drive, but with my MBP powered on upstairs, with the VIDEO_TS alias' from the network drive mounted to the MBP that is connected/streaming to the ATV.

get it?

Thanks,

If my internet connection and my type of router has nothing to do with how long it takes my Apple TV to sync and rent content, then what does?

I'm being serious.

Your internet connection and type of router do have to do with your connections speed. However, that wasn't the information you provided. Syncing your Apple TV is done over the local network. The 802.11n connection is also over your local network (which explains why you were able to sync so quickly). It's your connection to the outside world that determines your internet connection speed (and, consequently, how long it takes a movie to download to your Apple TV). The "router type" information that would give some insight into connection speed is just whether or not it's a cable modem. The fact it's "AT&T" would indicate it is.

If you go to Speedtest.net and check your connection speed, that will give you the information you are looking for.

thanks for the video_ts answer...

No the files have to be a compatible H.264 or MPEG-4 file to play on the AppleTV.

http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html

Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats)

WIth 1.1 you could update the drive - no one has hacked Take Two that I know of yet to do this. I prefer to just buy a 500g USB drive and stream from iTunes - much easier and cheeper.

Dang... that's too bad, I thought that was sooo cool about front row.

Man, i think i really just want a Mac Mini as a media center and connect dvi-to-hdmi.

But as of yet you can't do all that fancy rental stuff... or rent HD via computer itunes, hmmm.

damnit i want both. I wish ATV was just a little more independent.

ARGH>>>>>

Advice?

Ok...here's my setup and what i want to do:

Currently have a 24"iMac w/750 Gig harddrive and an AEBS.

I want to get an :apple:TV and keep all my video content on my iMac and just stream everything.

I want to get a 1T Time Capsule (when they come out) for backup. I'm ASSUMING you won't be able to use Time Capsule as a NAS, so I'll probably get a firewire external HD for my audio/video (which should be streamable to my :apple:TV)

I want to keep my iMac's internal drive as free as possible, hence the external HD for audio/video. The Time Capsule would be for backups only.

With this set up, I see no reason to get the 160gig :apple:TV, so the 40gig version would be just fine.

Am I missing something or is this a good setup with expandability in mind (i.e. I'm not painting myself into a corner in some way)??

Thanks for any input.....I've been waiting for this update to finally get my :apple:TV and I think the time has come.:D

Has anyone else ran the software update again ?

Only i did and found another update ? lot smaller/faster but definitely a second update after take 2 !!!!

why did they mess with the way you stream content from a computer?

okay.. here's my rant...

i like the update, but why did they have to change the way you select a iTunes computer from which to stream content?

It's repetitive, and irritating now.. before, you just had to select your computer once, and the content would just be available, no matter what area you were in (photos, videos, music).. Now, you have to select your source every time... it doesn't make sense..

And now you can't select streamed music as your bg music for photo slideshows.. it only allows you to select music that is synced to your atv..

I hated syncing my content to the atv because it was too slow, and the hard drive was too small.. streaming worked really well for me.. why did they have to screw with something that was already working well? UGGGH..

Yep I get it - the answer is still that it will only accept streams and or syncs of those two file types for video. Does not matter how you link to it - the file must be MPEG-4 or h.264 and at the specs it supports.

US ATV works in Japan

So if i buy an apple tv, and use my american credit card with my american address they will not let me rent a movie because i'm in Canada?

I'm in Japan with my US purchased ATV and was just able to purchase a movie rental from the US iTunes store (via ATV) using my US registered Apple ID. Given that I don't think there is any IP based filtering.

I suppose they could have the purchased country embeded in the ATV and are now using that to block.

try restarting your appletv. i had the same error and that fixed it. downloading now.

I'm getting the following message when I check for update:

"There is no update available.
AppleTV can't check right now. Try again later"

Is anyone else getting this message? Are the apple servers are down? I am connected to the internet and can view trailers, etc. So its not a problem with my connection.

I am not sure what the problem could be on my end, but if others do not have the problem then it must not be on Apple's end.

I "hacked" my Apple TV to be able to install Perian on it. I am trying to figure out if that is related to this problem.

Well, I rented my first movie and must say I was impressed. It went incredibly smoothly, I started watching it just seconds after the download started...picture quality was incredible.

However, I was just streaming some music to it, and after playing one song it locked up...had to power cycle it. Hopefully this is just a fluke.

can you connect an external HD to the USB of AppleTV and increase your storage?
That's a much larger and cheaper solution than buy the 160gig AppleTV

And aren't there monthly subscriptions in that model?

Not that I have seen - but to be honest I dont use it - I dont have my phone hooked up and have to call ahead to order anything. It was just easier to go to Blockbuster on the way home and get what I really wanted.

Doesn't aTV have a setting that switches it to a letterbox mode for 480 tv's?
No. If your TV has a letterboxing mode, you can use that, though.
did you need to do anything special to get it to work ? [...]
Viewsonic - Model VX2235wm
http://viewsonic.com/products/lcddisplays/xseries/vx2235wm/
widescreen, resolution up to 1680x1050 (50 - 60 hz)
Your monitor doesn't support any of the AppleTV's resolutions according to the user guide. Also, you should generally turn off your devices (not sleep them) when connecting HDMI (or any digital) cables to minimize problems with detecting the input.

1280x720 or 1920x1080 are the resolutions you're looking for. Failing that, you could try 720x480 or 640x480, though it's not really worth it at that point on a computer monitor...and many LCDs don't go down that low anyway.

Internet radio works now!!

I can't search through internet radio like I can with iTunes and Squeezebox, etc. However, I have a playlist in iTunes that point to various favorite streams and AppleTV can play them now. I did not think it played them before! Great.

2.0 Busts HDMI to DVI cable

My apple TV was running fine at 1.1 on an HDMI-DVI converter cable. 2.0 busts this capability in all resolutions. I had to revert to component video to get it to work.

AirTunes and Resolution Clarification please!

Well, I rented my first movie and must say I was impressed. It went incredibly smoothly, I started watching it just seconds after the download started...picture quality was incredible.

However, I was just streaming some music to it, and after playing one song it locked up...had to power cycle it. Hopefully this is just a fluke.

I can't wait to try everything!

what's with the AirTunes? is that to or from the aTV? it seems reduntant, but cool none the less...can you stream audio to a airport express? the apple site also said something about streaming cover art and titles...to where?

Also, will 1080p only be truly that if the movie is encoded that way from the movie house?

Triangulating in on the HD rental data rate

In post #305 (p.13) I asked a straightforward question
affecting a purchase decision for Apple TV, but the
answers come hard.

Looking for the encoding bitrate of HD rental files, but
for reasons known only to Apple, this info is obscured.

One poster said they were running 10 mbps with no problem
buffering (OK, we know the max bitrate of Apple TV is 5 mbps,
so that makes sense); another poster said they had a
connection of ">4.5mbps" with little problem on Pirates,
but few are posting their connection speed, which is key.

Now, I'm assuming that Apple provides little info in the
HD rental process to provide either movie filesize or bitrate
info (say via the traditional QuickTime "Show movie properties"
or QT Pro "Show movie inpector"), so, Mr. Couch Potato
Apple Engineer, what is the avg. bitrate for HD rentals?

"It depends" is the answer obtained at MacWorld, but now
that we are public with the product, then it should not be
proprietary info and thus OK to reveal...
