Yes, you can, and it works. I have one set up in our kitchen that way.

did you need to do anything special to get it to work ?

Here's what I did.

1) in :apple:TV settings I changed the display to 720p , went back to main screen, held the play/pause button for about 10 seconds to have the :apple:TV sleep.

2) connected HDMI end of the HDMI to DVI Cable (Phillips brand) to the
:apple:TV, and connected the DVI end to my monitor
Viewsonic - Model VX2235wm
http://viewsonic.com/products/lcddisplays/xseries/vx2235wm/
widescreen, resolution up to 1680x1050 (50 - 60 hz)

3) turned on the monitor & :apple:TV

No go.

I also tried running the HDMI cable into my receiver, then the HDMI to DVI cable from the receivers HDMI out port, to the monitors DVI

Thanks !

Great, but does it have the "Radio" tuner like in iTunes?

The streaming of internet radio is FROM iTunes - the update lets you chose your AppleTV as a AirTunes destination.

This is what airtunes is incase your getting confused with streaming content to the AppleTV:

http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/airtunes.html

Edit to say maybe Im the one confused here... looks like you can put one radio station into its own play list and select it from the AppleTV in your shared content.

I have the AT&T Pro Package and I believe that is what it is putting out in my house.

Syncing the Apple TV only took about 10 minutes with about 20gb of content.

I have an Airport Base Station so I also have an N network. I don't know what the problem is.

It's hard to say exactly what your connection speed is based on the information you provided. Syncing the Apple TV has nothing to do with your internet connection. Neither does an N network. Both are only related to the speed of your local network. If you want to test your internet connection speed, check someplace like Speedtest.net. I generally get around 11000 kbps.

Chris

Music Playlists: Nested folders now supported

Another discovery:

Nested folders in playlists now display correctly in Music.

i.e.

Year
1950's
1960's
1980's

Favorite Artists
Feist
U2
Michael Jackson

... and so on :D

At that rate, it will take you about 15 hours to finish downloading - it probably doesn't let you start watching until it thinks you can finish the movie without an interruption. If it didn't, you could start watching and not be done downloading before the 24 hours expires.

Oh, thats nice of the Apple TV to let me know when I have time to watch the movie.

How does the Apple TV know when I can watch the movie without interruption? Does it go off my iCal schedule?

If my internet connection and my type of router has nothing to do with how long it takes my Apple TV to sync and rent content, then what does?

I'm being serious.

Are you serious???

It won't allow you to start playback until it will take less time to complete the download than it will to watch the movie based on your current download speed.
BTW, this has been one of the variables you could check/access in QuickTime since the very early days.

Your internet connection will effect rentals (higher the connection speed the faster your movie will download).

The internet has nothing to do with you transferring a file from a computer to the AppleTV - that would be your home network who's speed is dependent on your hardware and network set up regardless of your internet connection speed - you dont even need an internet connection to transfer files on a home network between computers and the AppleTV.

Cannot update!

I'm getting the following message when I check for update:

"There is no update available.
AppleTV can't check right now. Try again later"

Is anyone else getting this message? Are the apple servers are down? I am connected to the internet and can view trailers, etc. So its not a problem with my connection.

I am not sure what the problem could be on my end, but if others do not have the problem then it must not be on Apple's end.

I "hacked" my Apple TV to be able to install Perian on it. I am trying to figure out if that is related to this problem.

I'd like to take a quick opportunity to thank all participants on pages 8-16. The weather in Washington DC tonight made my normal 30 minute bus ride home 3+ hours. The updates in this thread helped keep me sane. Thanks.

Good news on the 5.1 front. If this works I'll need to go buy an ATV an likely an iMac too.

No, that's a farfetched idea.

Instead, it watches you with your Mac's iSight camera and notes your habits and schedule! ;)

Usually part of the hack is to disable the updates....

Go into your settings and make sure it's still connected to your router, I have run into this before. and if it is try reseting you modem

Yes it is STILL one huge list

Please someone tell me the "My Movies" section isn't just a huge long list of all the movies in iTunes. Is there any organization at all? Playlists, genres, years, etc?

- Yep, didn't do anything here. Got excited by the quicktime demo that I might actually be able to search by name and categories. Nope no search on non-Itunes store items.

- Didn't fix photos - still only slide shows. Can't believe they can't have it support photo catalogs like several generations of the ipod can provide.

- Broke any separation of My Movies lists between sync source and ATV Hard Disk. Now you either get all the movies available on the sync source in your list or you block all but those on your Hard Disk. Since Apple provides no clean way of separation of movie categories (huge monolithic list) this was one of the ways to break them up. I had kids movies on the ATV HD and PG-R would be found by changing source.
Kevin - A fix to this would be to change parental controls to only list the movies available with controls in place.

After Updating I'm not Seeing 1080p as an option just 1080i.
I'm connected Via HDMI on a 1080p Sony.

If I Buy a TV Show and it DL's to the ATV,
How Can I get it back to my Itunes Library?

will alias' to VIDEO_TS work?

Right now i rip dvd's onto an external hard drive and rename their VIDEO_TS folders to their appropriate names and store them on an external drive mounted through my Airport Extreme. I put alias' for these folders in my "Movies" folder on my macbook pro (with leopard) and they show up on "My movies" in front row 2 and i can play them like real dvd's with menu's and all.

Will i be able to do this on ATV take 2?

Also, do i really need to get the ATV with the bigger hard drive? i think i saw a hack website that installed a new one (i know i know, this question has been asked before). And $229 sound so much better than $329.

Thanks,

ACK.

Next time the appleTV runs a sync, it will end up on your computer.

No the files have to be a compatible H.264 or MPEG-4 file to play on the AppleTV.

http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html

Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats)

WIth 1.1 you could update the drive - no one has hacked Take Two that I know of yet to do this. I prefer to just buy a 500g USB drive and stream from iTunes - much easier and cheeper.

Dumping DVD in favor of HD isn't really an option with the aTV since you can't buy HD movies yet. Or were you being sarcastic? Telling someone they need to dump all their content and buy it again is a bit ridiculous, especially in response to a complaint about the menu system.

Not to mention that before long people will be ripping HD content, so your "fix" isn't really a fix.
My *dump* comment is to dump DVDs and to start buying blu-ray.
