I dont rent movies and I dont plan to....I have over 300+ movies...and a big long list...how nice...try to find a movie in that list...grrrr:mad:

Yeah, I was hoping to convert DVDs to high quality video with DD5.1 sound so I could have easy access but the new software is pretty useless for that.

Oh well, at least being able to 'surf' podcasts is a usable feature.

Sorry dude but get with the times. DVDs are 480p. Upconverted DVDs look like crap. You are satisfied watching that? Call me an HD snob but if it's not in HD I won't watch it. I bought the AppleTV for the purpose of renting HD content. I have a PS3 to watch blu-ray movies. Time to dump your 300 movie collection and upgrade to HD.

Dumping DVD in favor of HD isn't really an option with the aTV since you can't buy HD movies yet. Or were you being sarcastic? Telling someone they need to dump all their content and buy it again is a bit ridiculous, especially in response to a complaint about the menu system.

Not to mention that before long people will be ripping HD content, so your "fix" isn't really a fix.

I have heard Apple TV owners say in the past that if they embed the cover art into the movie(thru 3rd party software) that it would show up in the as a poster in the menu views. Is that no longer true?

no it still shows up...but the movie titles are still in list...there is no movie art browsing or coverflow or anything like that....

I can't wait to hook it back up to my slingbox. Now I just need a slingplayer on my iPHONE I'll keep my fingers crossed for the SDK to be a big hit for the people at Sling Media.

Pssst, not to derail the thread, but you shouldn't convince yourself this is actually legal. It sucks, but because DVD's have DRM, under the DMCA it is not legal to circumvent the DRM to copy them, or for any other reason, whether you own them or not. Ridiculous maybe, and no one's going to get prosecuted for it any time soon (unless they're sharing), but be advised that it's never actually legal for a consumer to copy a coprighted DVD (unless you're authorized by the copyright owner, of course).

This is not true... Kaleidescape makes a high end media server ($25K and up) that allows you to rip the DVDs you own and store them on HDD for instant access (what You can do with a Mac, large external HDD and AppleTV for 1/10 the price). They were sued by the DVD Copy Control Association.

Kaleidescape won!

Very quick update for me. Download took about 3 minutes then maybe another 10 to update the AppleTV.

I like the movie selection. Just hope they either add to or rotate it in a reasonable fashion. I can see the potential for this thing. It could become a very nice "Video on demand" device if the selection continues to grow.

Question: Can an :apple:TV be hooked up to a Computer DVi Monitor using a HDMI to DVI Cable ? If so I might buy 2 more of :apple:TV's (I have 1 AppleTV hooked up to a HD Television right now.)

Maybe. If your DVI Monitor has support for 720p, 1080i, or 1080p inputs then it should work.

Kevin

i don't have an apple tv but seeing at apple i was wondering why the movies are labeled with numbers from 1 to 9 in the interface. new remote comming?

I'm interested in the comments about the new intro video. For those of us without an AppleTV at the ready, could someone who's not afraid of getting their hands dirty post it?

Apple TV Movie Playlist

Yep. Too funny watching all the speculation about it running 10.5.2.

:D

Kevin

Hi Kevin. Is it possible, yet, to make movie or video playlists and/or loop or repeat a movie on Apple TV?

Thanks

So...
1. Satellite or cable for broadcast TV.
2. DVD / Blu-Ray Player for existing discs or store rentals.
3. Apple TV in case I want to buy a TV show that I could have recorded with a DVR for free.

It sure doesn't sound like a convergence device at all to me. It seems like Apple should give it away with a subscription for rentals or something. To pay nearly $300 for a device, then have to pay for all the content on it?

a) All your home movies & Pictures on your HDTV
b) Free, YouTube, Video Podcasts on Your HDTV
c) All the DVDs you own available without getting up to find one.....
d) TV shows or Movies you don't currently own or renting, available on demand.
e) All your music at your fingertips

It's a whole 'nother dimension-- you get to hear/watch what you want, when (and where) you want. You can start a movie, switch to another, say, for the kids, then later switch back and pick up where you left off. No, disappointment with scratched or broken media. No trips ($ for gas) to the vid store, or waiting for the mail.

It's convenience & control of your media experience.

I think it's kinda odd that people are complaining that they can't do easy ripping and encoding with their Apple TV. I don't think that's what this device is all about. It's about taking what you've BOUGHT or RENTED from the iTunes Store and playing it on your widescreen TV. If you're looking for anything else from this product, you're stepping outside the intended design of this product, and shouldn't be disappointed. There are other products out there you know...

Apple TV take 2 usage

quick question from a potential :apple:tv owner. How big are your dvd rips normally? and can the harddrive in it be upgraded? i have 200+ dvds and would want to sync them all to appleTV so i didn't need my macbook on to stream them.

For 200+ movies you would most likely use up around 440 GB of storage at a 2500 bit rate (you could use a lower bit rate, but on a 40" LCD I would not recommend it). As far as the HDD upgrade, the ATV uses a 2.5" laptop drive which currently goes up to 320GB, so would still have some movies left out. So Syncing would still be likely for some movies.

My suggestion is to play with the Smart playlist feature in Itunes and only sync up the latest unseen movies or TV shows. I currently have around 300 movies in my 1TB NAS and usually sync up at night when I stop watching the new stuff I get.

I simply don't agree.

Watching ripped dvds is a HUGE use for this thing, tons of people are doing it already and tons more will as the device gets more popular. At this point I think most people don't expect apple to provide a ripping solution, but the box should at least be able to sort user content well.

Yes, you can, and it works. I have one set up in our kitchen that way.

Airtunes

has anyone mentioned that airtunes is available on the apple tv take 2? i can now stream music from itunes to living room tv...

interesting considering i can already play it from the appletv.

or was that already there and i'm dumb?

Call me a little slow, but someone help me out and quantify what the differences are between the streaming on content that was available in AppleTV 1.0 and the addition of Airtunes. Is it not the same thing...? A little confused here...

I have always streamed my collection due the puny hard drive in the thing...

Smart playlists are your friend, absolutely. Between star rankings and least recently played/lowest playcount, it should be easy to keep lots of fresh content on there.

Kevin

went and got a cable, and unfortunately it didn't work. :(

Monitor: Viewsonic - Model VX2235wm

oh well, my wallet will be happier I guess.

I have a quick question, I know that they offer HD Movies, but are HD TV Shows available yet? Thanks in advance!
