I saved the ac3 stream as a separate file and after that I opened both the mp4 and the ac3 file in Quicktime Pro. I copied the AC3 and pasted it to the mp4 file. I then saved the file as mov (do not export - just save as)

Any audio/video sync probs? Like if you go to the end of the movie is it still in sync?

I purchased a tv show from the Apple TV and it is not back-syncing to my mac. Is it supposed to? If not, it makes more sense to purchase content from the mac and sync to Apple TV, rather than purchasing directly from the Apple TV.
If this has been discussed already...sorry. The thread is now too long to read through.

has anyone purchased an HD rental directly from the :apple:tv yet?
how long did it take to download? how long did you have to wait before you could start viewing?

I rented Pirates of the Carribean 2 hours ago, but don't plan on watching it until later tonight. So its been 2 hours and it has downloaded 92% so far. I don't know whether this is the normal time it will take for HD movies, or due to speed of Wireless G Router, or just the fact that everyone and their grandma are playing with ATV as we speak and messing up the servers!

Items purchased on ATV should be synced back to iTunes the next time a sync is performed.

Can anyone tell me if the apple TV now supports composite? I've only got one component input on my TV which I use for my DTV receiver.

It used to be by plugging a composite cable into the green component output you could get a black and white image, but there were hacks to get it in color. Any chance Apple officially support it now?

And on a related note, if not, any suggestions for a cheap component selector? They all seem to be $00s?

No, this was a software update not a hardware update - you would need to change the hardware to support composite.

I don't think that's true. The hacks for using composite just involved a software change to allow it to output full color over composite via the green component plug. So it doesn't require a hardware change - it just requires Apple to open the door!

Be interesting to see the two industries of distribution and content go at each other - just as people are claiming DVD's are dead the cable companies are saying they are going to start charging more for people using high bandwidths.

Betcha they don't say that in FIOS markets ;)

The best take 2 feature ....

Over 1 1/2 hours into Lord of the Rings with a bit rate > 4500 mbps and a size > 7 GB and the "pausing" issue has not occurred!

That is the best update they could have included!!!

what I see so far

I really think the first level menu is pretty lame..

I don't see what they are buying giving us the 2 tiers.

My bigger disappointment (so far) is that it appears that the most of the menu choices are targeted to the store content with my local shares at the bottom of each menu.

Since I have 600+ dvd ripped (and about 200 more to go) I was hoping that they were going to make the user experience for local content better. This doesn't seem to be the case.

That's sad, it's not a good direction to go and really makes the box have more of a marketing slant ( 6 out of 7 menu selections deal with store content ), not good.

Once you leave the first level menu it looks like the old menus so apparently they didn't carry the redesign very far for legacy stuff.

If anyone finds out how to get 'Local Content' (i.e. stuff on my mac mini) to show up in the other menus (eg. Genres) it would really change my mind.

I do buy content but not in the volume of the dvd collection I already had.

( what's up with Avatar Season 3? The iTunes store is like 3 episodes behind ).

I guess I'm not the targeted audience for this device at this time..

that's sad.

Got One.

In the last hour, I have read this post, gone to the Apple Store, got home, set it up and upgraded. So in 10 minutes of playing around (while I am streaming AirTunes) is that it is very impressive. Setup was unbelievably easy and I have watched a couple of trailers which look awesome. Still syncing, which looks like it is going to take a while, so I am excited to fully play around after syncing is completed. Bonus: wife got it for me for Valentine's.

newer movies?

Interesting that "The Brave One" is available for rent on Apple TV store, but not yet available through iTunes. It would really be great if they could start releasing movies the same day the DVD comes out. Hopefully this will start to happen over the next few months... love the new Apple TV.

Ok, now that the excitement's over, Take 2 looks great,

BUT -

When are Apple gonna get the finger out and sort out Movies, whether they be for Purchase or Rental for us Apple TV users in the UK.

We pay a premium for Apple products over here, but get nowhere near the service back that users in the US get.

I am over the moon with the Apple TV update, its just what the product has needed, but i wuld be much, much happier if Apple would sort out movies for us in the UK, Rest of Europe, Canada, etc, etc.

Another discovery I hadn't seen mentioned -

Streaming Radio Stations now work!!!!!

Just put them into a playlist - I'm listening to one from Live365 now.

From what I understand, 1080i works in the UI, not on movie playback,.. but does it work with photos? Also is the Handbrake program used on a standard DVD or does the DVD files need to be converted with MacTheRipper first?

Does this mean my DVD library can sit on an external USB drive, connected to my MacPro - and I can access it from my living room with :apple:TV ??

summarized and added notes to the main story that were mentioned in the discussion thread.
https://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/12/apple-releases-apple-tv-take-2-update/

- New startup video when booting Apple TV
- Apple TV can now be used with AirTunes, replicating Airport Express behavior. Will also stream Title, and Album cover. You can also control the iTunes music via the Apple TV (with the remote).
- Login to Youtube now supported, with subscriptions and favorites
- Fastforward and rewind performance has been improved
- You still need a TV that can accept Component or HDMI
- Anecdotal reports of better decoding performance.

1, The Mac version of Handbrake works from your standard DVD. Windows version requires a decryptor.
2. As long as you have an Itunes library for your media on your external (but attached) drive you should have no trouble. On a Mac hold down the option key while launching Itunes to create an additional library.

Party Mode (multiple airtunes)

One of my favorite new features is the airtunes streaming - you can stream to multiple apple tvs, the album art comes up on all the screens, and the sound is time aligned as well.

You can encode direct from the DVD with Handbrake. No need to rip unless you want to queue up several movies at a time for encoding.

Yes, as long as our Mac Pro is on and iTunes is running. I have a Drobo that holds my iTunes Library connected to an old PowerBook with iTunes running. My Apple TV syncs/streams with it just fine.

agree with this for what I've seen so far. locally stored movies still seem to be just one big flat list ,which is useless if you have lots. I'm surprised they didn't have some kind of album art browse mode, or let you browse by genre/title search or similar. I guess they just don't expect you to have lots of stuff unlike with music tracks.

Didn't Steve say something like "the whole thing is centered around the movie rental experience" in the keynote? Why are you surprised?

quick question from a potential :apple:tv owner. How big are your dvd rips normally? and can the harddrive in it be upgraded? i have 200+ dvds and would want to sync them all to appleTV so i didn't need my macbook on to stream them.
