Hey guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I usually get answers by browsing, but this appears to be an isolated issue:

Our apple tv and only flat screen are in our country house, which only has extremely slow dial-up...pretty much impossible to download the update from there. We have DSL in our apartment but I would have to navigate through the menus blindly in order to get to the update...not very practical and likely only to work after multiple tries. I'm downloading the dmg update file on my mbp as we speak...anyone know of a way I can point the apple tv to my laptop as the update server? If not...any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I realize the main purpose of this update is rentals which require highspeed...but frankly my biggest issue for a looooong time (since I updated iPhoto) has been lack of support for iPhoto events. This update is the answer to my little prayer. :)

Unplug your Apple TV..Take it to your apartment with the dsl and plug it in.you don't need a computer to update it.

It did that to me when I first installed the update. If you navigate to the top of the list of shows and click the right button, it should organize by Show instead of Date (once organized by show it will separate the seasons of your shows seasons).

To clarify, did you mean the Apple TV update or Front Row update? I may not have been clear in my original message. In Front Row, after the last update, I do have it sorted by show. What happens is each season is displayed separately, thus giving me 9 separate South Park listings. Before I update my Apple TV, I definitely want to make sure this doesn't happen.

I don't recommend LCD at all. I'm a Trinitron CRT guy myself (absolutely nothing beats them on color, clarity and contrast) but seeing as how Sony discontinued WEGA HDTV CRT's, I would strongly suggest you look at the Sony SXRD series... particularly the XBR SXRD if you have the dough.

The SXRD is a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) projection set. It is not a flat panel, but a projection TV like DLP. However, unlike DLP, it uses an array of liquid crystals instead of micromirrors to directly generate the projection image. This allows supporting resolutions well above 1080p so that the image at 1080p is itself quite stunning.

I still find the 70" SXRD XBR inferior to the now-discontinued Trinitron WEGA HD, but it is the damned closest I have ever seen. And judging from how vastly better my Trinitron image of even upscaled SD appears off AppleTV, you would be very likely not to set foot in a movie theater ever again.*

I have a 50 in XRB unit and it is excellent. Cost about a $1000 less than the equivalent 46 in LCD. It is only 14 in deep.

That's okay, I was talking about my apple tv (it switched from sort by show before the update to sort by date afterwards).

I think you misunderstand...or maybe I misunderstand I dunno...

In order for me to update I'd need to navigate the apple tv menus...and I don't have a flat screen tv to do that in the apt. That's why I asked if it would be possible to go through the computer since I can download the dmg file at the apt. and take it to the country house.

I had posted this as a new thread, but saw all the activity on this one.

If you are watching the rental and the 24hrs expires, it allows you to finish the movie, fast forward, etc.

Once you try to leave the movie it ask if you would like to continue watching movie or immediately delete movie. For those who were not sure about the 24hrs being long enough, you could just leave the movie paused and finish the next day I guess. Haven't tried the pause over night thing, but I skipped back to chapter one and the kids are watching movie again.

I simply don't agree.

Watching ripped dvds is a HUGE use for this thing, tons of people are doing it already and tons more will as the device gets more popular. At this point I think most people don't expect apple to provide a ripping solution, but the box should at least be able to sort user content well.

I agree I have 400+ ripped dvds that I stream from an iMac with library(s) on external LaCie 2 TB drive.

Same sorting/searching/grouping capability should be available for all media (Music, Music Vids, Podcasts, Vid Podcasts, TV shows, Movies, etc.) regardless of where they reside (AppleTV or Remote Mac) and where/how they were obtained (ripped, purchased, downloaded, streamed live over the web),

Odd...

I can stream My photos from any Mac on my wifi network except the Mac that is synched to AppleTV & contains large iTunes and iPhoto libraries on external HDDs. I must synch/download the photos to AppleTV to view them

Everything else streams fine, tho!

I was just flipping through some of the music videos and realized that they look pretty cool up there on the TV. If video playlists were supported, maybe I'd actually buy some. It'd be cool to just have them playing while I'm cooking or something.

Power Outage - First Test

I started to download 300, and 2 minutes into watching I lost power .... I have battery backup for internet etc, but not on the appletv at the time ( note to self )

I;ll see what happens when the power comes back ....

You can actually stream from the Mac that is synced if you also set it up as a streaming computer.

Effects after power cut ...

Seems nothing bad happened, movie continued to download .. everything "Perfect"

Your AppleTV will download the update without your having to prompt it to, which is what he tried to say. Plugging it into a fast connection, say, overnight, will allow it to download the update. When you get back to the country house, it will ask you if you want to install the update.

Oooh for real? I thought you'd have to prompt it to download as well as install. Sweet! Thanks guys. That's great news. :)

I believe it automatically checks weekly for updates. Not sure what day it is set to though.

Yeah that's true. When I checked for updates on dial-up if I remember correctly it gave the option to download now or save for later...something along those lines. I tried and I know it doesn't do partial downloads like software update on the mac, because when my dial-up disconnected after some 30 mins it restarted from the beginning. (The whole thing would've been a 32 hour download if the connection never dropped btw...lol.)

Do you think the download would automatically restart a week from when I last tried? Or is the day set? I can't really take the apple tv away for an entire week...

Hi Everyone - first post!
I've been lurkin' and learnin' here for years but now I have to ask!

(BTW - my username was supposed to be Pheasant Plucker but it's been truncated. Is this site running on DOS? :) )

This should work. I just streamed music to my Airport Express in the Office and my Apple TV in the living room simultaneously. And they're in sync, i.e. there is no delay between the audio in the office and the audio in the living room. And I control the audio in both rooms from the living room with the remote. Now, if Apple drops the price of the Airport Express (to let's say $69?) I'll buy a few more and get music in the whole house.

I agree. I managed to use the "Multiple speakers" option to stream music to our family room Airport Express and also (in sync.) to the aTV in our home theater room. Sound is all good. However I cannot get the aTV to know which track is playing or to pick up the album art. Is this to be expected?

Apple You're Not Listening

I know us Apple product users have a ton of loyal programmers out there looking for an opportunity to make a name for themselves. Here is an opportunity. Apple is losing its vision. I want to begin of list of hacks that we as AppleTV owners would like create in order to make the AppleTV what it needs to be to gain real world exposure.

#1 What the hell is going to happen to all the movie I already own am i suppose to dump them and buy new ones from the apple store - to that i say, FU Apple.

- We need to be able to manage our current content
- Include PG-13 - R system so we can tie the parental feature in with our current content.
- Current content needs to be categories so UI doesn't load 300 MPG4 in one instance

#2. NetFlix rental content - It would be freaking awesome if i could connect my Netflix subscription to watch movies on AppleTV or apple needs to come up with a similar solution.

#3. Bring movie out of the theatre quicker than DVD and put them on my AppleTV or skip the theatre all together

#4. when are going to allow people to freely write code for IPhone, AppleTV and etc.

#5. Takes to long to connect to my shared Apple Library

#6. I want to play games on it. – emulators would be nice

#7. USB should be able to be used for - keyboards, cameras, etc..

#8. I want to browse the internet, google maps or earth would be nice

#9. Basically i want to make this a product i want to use everyday instead of now and then.

If you are out there listen apple we are talking are you listening?
Don't be another Microsoft or Vista failure.

Pretty demanding aren't you? You want a box that does everything and anything connected to your tv. Your solution: plug in a Mac Mini.

He forgot to complain about the price. Why doesn't Apple also give the box away free with all of his features? They just aren't listening :p

Yes, I've been ripping all of my Netflix movies for sometime and keeping a big library....but I just cancelled my Netflix membership in the hopes that the rental service will satisfy me. I'm making the assumption that the library on iTunes will be comparable to Netflix at some point. Just seems easier to rent/buy via iTunes. And.....Apple just negated the need to buy a Blu-Ray player with HD content. Just hoping they will eventually allow for purchasing of HD stuff as well.

So, not nearly as much ripping in my future. :D

how about a feature where the ATV makes the hollywood writers come up with better movies? that would definitely boost sales. LOL.

however...

I do think that apple will eventually give these away, or almost. with a netflix subscription plan, and library, and a free unit, like DVR, this would take over.
I see it!

When people talk about Apple giving away something like the AppleTV so they can sell the content they're forgetting one thing: Apple makes very little money on the content. The content is how apple sells the hardware, not the other way around. Also, owning some apple hardware can make you want to own other apple hardware. Apple is not in the habit of giving hardware away and hoping they'll make it back by providing you the content.
