There's some free video file converter I got somewhere that converts those to mp4 files. Maybe someone will post what it's called and you can convert AVI files.

ya its called quicktime hehe. You can open and export to mov. Even the new pc version of quicktime does it now.

What Apple need to do in order to ensure that Apple TV has a future is establish a bigger market for it and the concept of it being your video rental store is actually a very good one.

If it was *just* your video store in a box it would be successful, but it *also* has all that media streaming crap which no-one on this board will say a word against, but which average folk are put off by.

Why are average folk put off by this? How is more functions in a device like this a bad thing?

Take 2 is pretty good

Had fun with my Take 2 upgrade last night. Rented a movie and within a minute it was ready to play (I have 2Mbs cable service). Being able to get music on the TV is cool, although I like the iPhone music browser better. Renting movies is awesome; I can't wait until they get more movies online (their goal should be to have more movies than Netflix).

The main "easy software upgrade" that they really need to add is Internet Radio! Especially if you like international music (more than just Spanish music), you can't get everything you want off of iTunes.

I thought various users said internet radio now works in Take 2?!

HD Rental

I rented my first HD movie from the Apple Store. Pirates...At Worlds End. It took all night to download, but that is because my DSL connection at the moment sucks. 10meg connection getting a 2-5meg connection at best. Weather is messing up the phone lines in the middle of no-where Wisconsin.

Tonight I will be watching the movie and see how it is.

My other movies (my own DVD collection) are MP4 and encoded with AAC audio. I bring up in QT the movie properties and it says it is AAC 5.1, but when played on :apple:TV through the optic port my receive plays it as normal (2 channel sound). So I don't know if my encoding is wrong or what, or mp4s are not designed currently to handle 5.1 sound in AAC.

I don't feel like reencoding all my movies, but if I can get the 5.1 sound out of it, it might be worth it.

Any insight on how to encode with 5.1 from DVD would be great. I know this might be the wrong thread to post in. I am in a Windows environment and currently using DVDFab and meGUI w/NeroAAC codecs.

As it stands it's too much like trying to turn the TV in to a computer. People's TV is their relaxation device and they don't want anyone trying to take that away from them by turning it in to a computer.

To be successful, it needs to be unashamedly a blob out device: no hierarchical menus, no thought required. Just flick the on-switch and it goes directly to a list of movies to rent. Click one, click again to pay, and then put the remote down and sit back and watch. Anything more complicated than that and people will see it as nerds trying to complicate their relaxation time.

Pages of discussion without answering the basic question --
what is the bitrate for HD rentals?

If closer to 5 mbps than 3 mbps, many DSL users will
be frustrated by long progressive download times, unless
they are close enough to the central office to receive 6 mbps.
E.g. if you only have 3 mbps, it will take an hour to start
watching a two-hour film encoded at 4.5 mbps...

Yes, we know this is somewhat content-dependent, but
720x480 SD anamorphic stuff is already known to be encoded
at 1.5 mbps with little variation. So, let's assume 2.35:1
aspect ratio for cinema -- simpler yet, what is the filesize
for Apple/Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean?

1.73 GB

I rented 300 last night in HD. I have 7 MB Cox Cable, pretty good download speeds even at peak, which it was when I downloaded it. It took 4 minutes for it to buffer enough to watch. Not bad at all! Hell it took me longer to grab snacks and the Wife. It was also quicker then running to Blockbuster and I did not have to change out of my comfy PJs. Oh also I won't have to run back to Blockbuster and pay the darn late fees cause I ALWAYS forget to return the movies.

Side note... is it me or is 300 REALLY boring. About an hour and a half into the 3 hour movie both my wife and I were falling asleep.

That's good news if it's really that simple.

Hopefully the HB guys will add the functionality to go straight to MOV. Worst case, someone can probably create a simple droplet app/script to do it.

here you go. save as application in applescript. This will take any .xxx file and save a .mov version of it in the source folder. just drop a bunch of movies on it.

on open input_movies
with timeout of 360000 seconds
repeat with this_movie in input_movies
set my_file to (this_movie as text)
tell application "QuickTime Player"
close every document
open this_movie
set save_location to text 1 thru -5 of (this_movie as text) & ".mov"
save self contained document 1 in save_location
end tell
end repeat
end timeout
tell application "QuickTime Player"
quit
end tell
end open

You really have oversimplified "the public". If that were the case, nobody would be using a DVR (TIVO or otherwise). Nothing is that simple in any of their menus. Heck, a DVD isn't that simple with all the adds, setup, etc. and people have not stopped buying those.

The HandBrake team is trying to add proper support, using the Apple intro movie as an example of how it should be done (.m4v file with main video, stereo AAC, AC3). It'll take a longer to figure out, but will be worth it in the end.

I was frustrated by this at first. But reading the threads at Apple showed that Apple did a smart thing here, although a bit cryptic on the description.

"Select Custom Sync and DO NOT check Show Only the synced items on my Apple TV.

With this method everything will show in My Movies/Music and so on. Stuff not synced on the ATV will still appear and stream automatically.

So no constant reloading of media library."

yes I found that ... and finally understood how it 'syncs' with one machine but has other libraries as shared, I didn't understand how that worked until I connected to one and saw an extra .. shared music .. icon in the list.

This is all fine but is there actually any documentation about this? AppleTV itself came with an original slim manual .. it seems that with the update we're just expected to figure it out. Same with 10.5.2 yesterday, I'm not sure I'm really ever going to figure out what it does.

/agree

Also have you ever tried to do any multimedia stuff with an Xbox360? Many menus. Yes the UI is good but it still take a lot to navigate..... and many people own those.

I don't own apple tv but I do have a question.

Yesterday I rented a movie through my laptop and started watching it. I wasn't able to finish the movie and ended up hitting pause and left everything on.

Will I be able to watch this past the 24 hour block that they allocate?

According to Macworld, you will. As long as you paused the movie and left everything untouched.

Love it but... Can't believe they didn't include music video playlists! :(

Yeah, "Music Videos" needs to be a whole separate category/subcategory in iTunes and AppleTV-- something like:

Music
Music Videos
Movies
TV Shows
Podcasts:
--Music
--Music Videos

Too bad they didn't add more screen savers or options. they did take out the apple logo screen saver though

I would love to see options for screen savers that can take RSS feeds, CNN headline news, stock quotes, weather, etc. I want to power a TV in my kitchen that could be used to show me useful information when not being used to play videos.

Even cooler if these could kick right in when I'm just playing music.

TV Shows

Does this update screw up the TV Show lists like the last Front Row updated did? In case you don't know what I'm talking about, will it show the same TV series for each season you have?

I can't tell you about the new Apple TV update... but I HATE how it does that in Front Row. You can't tell what season you're looking at unless you use the Album Art! Not cool.

In my opinion, each season should be a sub-menu inside of the 'show'.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how do I delete podcasts I downloaded directly on the :apple: TV?

I now have duplicates in my "My Podcasts" menu.

Can someone educate me on what's so cool about it other than to charge me for entertainment that I already pay for with Cable/Satellite?
No one can educate you on "what's so cool about it" because there really isn't anything "cool" about it, in and of itself. The AppleTV is just an accessory so how you watch video/photos will determine whether or not you purchase an AppleTV.

It did that to me when I first installed the update. If you navigate to the top of the list of shows and click the right button, it should organize by Show instead of Date (once organized by show it will separate the seasons of your shows seasons).
