If you mean was this a change since MacWorld, the answer is no. I'm not sure I'm following you...

Kevin

What you initially describe was going to a sub-menu that had the choice of local or shared media. Wasn't it? Then you said you would have to reconnect to that shared subset each time you selected shared content. My gripe was that this would take about five minutes each time if I constantly had to reconnect to shared media.

Niether of those seem to be the case. We had that discussion after mac world.

Ah, by submenu I meant from the list on the right hand side of the main menu (i.e. Movies -> Shared Movies).

The time to connect should be shorter in each of these since we're loading a subset of the shared library.

None of that design had changed.

Why! The front-end was fine, and now they have changed it to something that looks basic. No rentals in the UK, what a surprise.......didn't expect much as the TV content in the UK iTunes is poor too.

I am sure this will sound like a dumb question so sorry...

I do not know much about the AppleTV, but does this mean there is some kind of wireless device inside that is wifi capable to be able to download movies with out connecting to a computer?
Has everyone known it was wireless capable before the rental agreement?

Yes and Yes.

Yeah, it's always had wireless in, you can sync over wireless. This is just different software using the wireless.

New Start up Movie

Hi Apple TV (2) owners,

Can someone please get me the new Start up movie in full HD quality. It must be residing somewhere in your Apple TV 2. Possibly in /System/Library/CoreServices/ of Apple TV;)

I had managed to get the earlier one in full resolution [1280 x 720]. Desperate to get this too...

Thanks in advance...

I'd suggest reading the tech specs. The Apple TV includes wifi and ethernet for connecting to your network. You don't need a computer to rent movies. If you have a computer running iTunes on your network, you can push content from that computer to Apple TV or stream it. Pretty sweet setup.

Movie rental experience

So, after updating to 2.0, I decided to rent a movie. I picked "Die Hard with a Vengeance" in HD. I figured an action movie would be a good first rental. After all, with tons of explosions and frenetic camera work, a movie like "Die Hard" would betray any encoding issues.

WOW! I'm super impressed. Not only did the movie look and sound AMAZING, but the entire experience was flawless, from browsing to downloading to viewing. Image quality far exceeded my expectations, as did audio. There were no download or buffering issues, no stutter, no lag, nothing. The movie played perfectly.

As soon as Apple increases its catalog (a lot), goodbye Netflix!!!

How long did your download take? Did you get to start watching instantly? My download seems really slow... I am on an ethernet connection, not sure if that makes a difference...

yikes ... what happened here?

Anybody know how to go back to the version of Apple TV before 2.0? (I know about factory reset -- don't want to do that if I can avoid). I "upgraded" and I've decided that I like the old version more .. constantly having to re-sync with my host machine under "Shared Movies", "Shared Music", etc. is a pain in the a**! Also, the new interface, while I can appreciate how much work went into it, is just not as clean and intuitive. I can see faint text bar lines on the screen now that never appeared in the previous version. Maybe worth putting up with if the rental library was halfways decent (it will get MUCH better, I know .. but for now). Apple TV is a fantastic product and I loved the old "it". Help!

I got an email last night saying that .Mac members can share their content via AppleTV......now we're talking !
Amazing upgrade, will be looking to buy one now.

You can't avoid it if that's what you want to do. It looks like that's what you need to do anyway, since something is clearly broken--if you're not dead set on rolling back, try resetting all settings through the setup menu and disabling all syncing with a computer. Unplug the AppleTV for a while and set it back up. You'll still have version 2.0, of course.

Sounds like a failed update to me. I haven't had any content issues whatsoever or problems syncing. Constant re-syncing certainly is not an intended function.

If you're describing what I think you are, those were indeed there in the previous software (the horizontal "shadow" lines that span the width of the screen with the cursor move).

I was frustrated by this at first. But reading the threads at Apple showed that Apple did a smart thing here, although a bit cryptic on the description.

"Select Custom Sync and DO NOT check Show Only the synced items on my Apple TV.

With this method everything will show in My Movies/Music and so on. Stuff not synced on the ATV will still appear and stream automatically.

So no constant reloading of media library."

Great update to AppleTV, poor content (at the moment) in the UK and trailers take forever to start.

Can't help but feel that this upgrade is pure and simply to earn Apple more money.

I mean the features we really wanted such as Music Video Playlists, Better Photo Browsing still aren't there.

I don't think they want us to have our own media on the Apple TV ;-)

Great intro video though...

Can Apple TV output to airport express over airtunes? I don't think this question has been answered yet. My airport express is in a different room (not near a TV), connected to a receiver that distributes audio to the whole house. I'd like to control the distributed audio from my living room TV.
Firstly, thank you Apple, bravo on the update (just wish I could use it in the UK!)

Secondly, I've had an epiphany regarding your issue Thrillsmills (because I'm in the same situation)...

....Set up AirTunes in iTunes but select "Multiple Speakers" from the dropdown menu, from this choose BOTH the Apple TV + AirPort Express, now when you play your movie from the TV, just mute the TV and turn up the audio amp/distributor :)

I have no way of testing this, and can only assume that the :apple:TV streams the audio from iTunes, in which case the above method should work.

If it doesn't you could always use AirFoil and send it to the AirPort Express that way..

Thing is... Apple TV wasn't really selling that well as a device just for viewing your own media because it's only us geeks that will sit down and spend months ripping our DVD catalogues. In fact, let's be honest, the market for media streamers as a whole isn't exactly huge and they've been around for years.

What Apple need to do in order to ensure that Apple TV has a future is establish a bigger market for it and the concept of it being your video rental store is actually a very good one. Hopefully it'll do the trick, some momentum will be gained and Apple can put some of the functionality you've listed above in as another upgrade once the platforms future is secure.

Oh yeah, I completley agree! Would just have been nice to have some of those features this time round. I'm sure with time they will come. Viewing photos on this thing just isn't easy, cool or fun. It's better on my 5th Gen iPod.

Still I do love my AppleTV and will be putting a new 500gb 2.5" Hitachi disk in it soon. The 160gb I upgraded it to is starting to fill up :)

Remote

As mentioned before, nothing happens when I try to control AirTunes playback from my AppleTV, except the white led flashes when I press the remote. The song plays, the artwork shows but using the remote doesn't work.

Any ideas why that might be?

You need to go into iTunes Preferences, and allow remote control (on the Advanced tab I think?)
