Yes and Yes.

Kevin

You might notice I have not been falling over myself complaining about the late arrival of the update. I guess I'm just used to Apple trying to get one thing right (perfection) rather than doing fifteen things poorly in the same time (multitasking).

That being said, the wait is over and I want to say, as an admirer of Apple's design from the very start (Drinking the Kool Aid for 30 Years and Still Loving It!), thank you.

My view on this product is that if any other corporation had designed it, they would have abandoned it in search of short term profits the minute it performed dismally on initial release. However, I believe that the reason Apple is committed to this is because Steve Jobs himself really, truly believes this is more than just another product... that there's a kind of technological convergence on the horizon we've only seen in movies. That there are UI's and integration between devices we've dreamed of but... you know... When I saw how elegantly designed the iPhone is I said, "This is the first device that really truly makes me feel like I'm living in the 21st century."

That's how I feel about AppleTV. There are revisions yet to come but the fundamental CONCEPT is something breathtaking.

I'm a Financial Analyst in telecom and was just in a 2008 kickoff meeting this morning in which our regional VP talked heavily about where IP is going. You know, this is the first year that we admitted to ourselves that voice/Long Distance are going to be free and the real engine of revenue in the future is entirely in Data/IP.

I think that's what Apple and Jobs understand here... the same thing I did when I looked at my AppleTV and thought, "Why the hell doesn't my receiver, my DVD player, etc. speak IP?"

I think Steve was being very clever when he said that he hopes to see AppleTV become a fourth leg of the business. I think it's a great indication of Apple's future direction and why they're going to continue to dominate...

Not the least of which is owed to people like you whose eyes and ears have been focused on trying to understand not only what we want, but how and why we actually interact with technology, and then blow our minds with something elegant (or "insanely great" as Jobs used to say).

Kevin/imlucid... thanks.

Is it possible to not sync back my video purchases?

I'm trying to save space on my MBP so I deleted all the podcasts from iTunes and instead added all my Favorites to :apple:TV and I'll stream them as I want to watch them.

Are you sorting by "Date" instead of "Show"? Hit the right arrow on that menu...

Kevin

I've sorted it out now by removing and re-adding my Library to the :apple:TV. Not sure if the problem was something in the update or something I was doing stupid (but I'm sure I had it sorted by Show and nothing I did seemed to alter anything) but I'm happy again now, even if I do have to re-sync my content now (how fickle can I be :D)
Now that little hiccup is sorted, I can actually start enjoying it and from what I can see it looks impressive. Good work, Apple

Can someone educate me on what's so cool about it other than to charge me for entertainment that I already pay for with Cable/Satellite?

Well, in our house we LOVE having all our movies and TV shows available at your fingertips. (Mostly past seasons, we also have a 750GB DirecTV HR20 for current shows.) No DVD's to mess around with. We found that we watch more stuff we own this way that we ever did before. It's hard to explain until you use it for all your media... didn't think we'd use it as much as we do. Plus, we also love the photo viewer with music.

Any particular reason you're only considering LCD? I don't think there's a finer looking TV than the Panasonic plasmas.

I've got a 1080p Panny Plasma and its awesome but if you have to have the best, you've got to get a Pioneer Kuro.

If your viewing distance is far enough, I'd suggest rocking a 50 inch 720p Kuro. They can be found for under $2000 which is a great deal. 5080HD is the model number, reviews are absolutely incredible. If you've got some extra dough I'd suggest the 5010FD which is their 1080p model (future proofing purposes).

On the Panny front, I'd wait till April as their new lineup of models are coming out. The replacement (800 series) for the already impressive 700u series might actually be comprable to the blacks on the Kuro. If glare is an issue and you want that 1080p flavor, the PZ77u model is a great solution offering many of the Plasma benefits with the glare-reduction of an LCD.

All things considered equal, the BEST LCD still can't touch the BEST Plasma...that's not opinion, its fact.

But what about viewing angle? the room it would reside in is adjacent to the kitchen, and i'd be watching TV from straight on, and also at about 45 degrees when standing in the kitchen. That's why i asked about LCDs, they have the best viewing angle, yes?

I honestly am not sure about that. I'm a bit of a theatrical purist in the sense that I like to sit dead center due to the way soundtracks tend to be mixed... by an engineer sitting dead center in front of the screen!

I would check them both out and decide for yourself whether viewing angle matters more than picture.

The bootup (new) animation after the update switched my receiver from Dolby Prologic II to Dolby Digital.

I tried a few Movie Trailers and they all were still in Pro Logic

Relative to 1080p, the hardware is apparently still capped at 720p. For those who seem to think that it is now a 1080p device, it is apparently only able to upscale (720p) to 1080i or 1080p. It was always able to upscale to 1080i, so the 1080p option is a new choice. But make no mistake: that is definitely different than being able to playback a 1080i or 1080p signal.

I'm checking Handbrake 6 channel AAC now files now.

Can anyone confirm or unconfirm for me whether or not this update messes with your restore partition? If I dont like Take2 I'd like to go back to 1.0 ;)

Being the typical impatient guy i have a few questions before i go home later today, appreciate any answers of those lucky enough to be home already:

- how do sources work now? When you select my movies do you have to select a source? What if it is only connected to one computer? Do you still need to select a source?
- Did you try renting a movie? Approximately how long did it take before you can start watching? For DVD or HD quality?
- People are talking about apple tv showing up in the speaker list to stream from itunes. Can you stream to multiple apple tv's at once? That would be great for parties.
- Is the movie selection the same as the itunes movie selection? If not does it have more or less?
- Approximately how many high def movies are available for rental?
- is the fastforward and rewind performance improved?

Thanks,
Peter

Kevin,

Do you know if this update helped to resolve the "pausing" issue during playback for movie with higher bitrates? (>3500). That has been my only complaint about AppleTV since day 1 (I bought when they were 1st announced).

If so, do you know what was done to help remedy the problem?

No, it's not. The reason is most likely because of expsense. they will update the Express to 'N' soon enough... and when they do, I will buy two of them.

Do you have any basis for this or pure speculation? I just bought an Express (for the reason of segmenting my N network from my B/G for speed increases on my iMac and AppleTV).

Has Anyone Tried the USB Port?!?!

On the apple webpage they removed the "(for service and diagnostics)" comment on the USB 2.0 again. Please take a look at this. External storage anyone?

Took 15 Minutes To Update

So far so good. It took about 15 minutes to update. The intro is kinda cool.

Here's some pictures:

Thanks, keep us updated! Dying to know if Handbrake encoded files will be 5.1 :)

has anyone purchased an HD rental directly from the :apple:tv yet?
how long did it take to download? how long did you have to wait before you could start viewing?

airport express replacement???

I'd love one of these but the only way I can justify it is if it can replace my current airport express. Now that it supports AirTunes that is a big plus! But can anyone tell me if it supports the following features: 1) USB Printer sharing. 2) network sharing (acting an Ethernet to WLAN bridge).

And before you say it, I know that the Airport Extreme is intended for both of these features.... but the Apple TV seems to have the hardware to support both of these things, so I am just hoping!

On another topic, what LCD hi-def TV would anyone here, recommend to go with an appleTV?

I have owned pretty much every kind of HDTV. IMO, a 1080p flat panel LCD will be your best choice, unless of course you have a large theater room in which you would want a front projector.
