8 was the same as 7 and now this, the watch isn’t slow, they can’t even think of new ideas, give the series 9 the extra brightness or something
Let me tell you 7 was the 6. An S9 makes zero difference even on a newer nm. I expect Apple is pulling a forced upgrade with WatchOS10 making all previous gens a bit slower for no reason, except to "force upgrade".
They were testing the waters again with their making the screen green like on iPhone with an update few months ago on the Watch.

To do what? I'm not arguing against a better processor, but what does the current processor not do, or do too slowly?

Granted, I use my series 6 as a fitness watch 99% of the time, and a smartwatch the other 1%, but it's just as fast as the day I bought it. I've scratched the hell out of the screen, though..
It does everything very slowly. It doesn't sound like you actually use it. Try doing anything on the phone that you can also do on the watch, and compare. There is no comparison.

I typically upgrade every 2-3 years, and I have a Series 6 which works well but the battery is down to 84% now. I'm strongly considering a Series 9 because the updates over 3 model years make it seem worthwhile to upgrade. I'll have to take a look, once it comes out next month.
I'm in the exact boat as you. I usually upgrade every 2 years however the Series 8 didn't really do anything for me.

My Series 6 is currently at 81% battery health so once that hits 80% I'll get the battery swapped out (and from everything I've read, you just get a new/refurbished Watch) and then sell it to cover a little of the cost of a Series 9.

Apple is the king of milking designs/features before making any meaningful upgrades to the devices...

I mean I do think it needs a better processor if only for battery life since new processors tend to get more efficent but I don't see any real slowness or issues running WatchOS 9 on my Ultra or my family's Series 7&8 watches which all use the same basic processor that had been in place since the Series 6. What is in need of more processor speed in the watch?
If you "don't see it" then I don't know what to tell you. The watch is ridiculously slow. Sit in one place and issue a command on iPhone, then the same on the watch, and see the huge difference.

Still on a Series 3 and I can't for the life me justify the need to upgrade. Maybe ECG yeah, but outside of that the Series 3 seems to be working just fine. I even see people with the latest Pro iPhones still sporting a Series 3.

the watch needs more battery life. the ultra isn't a revelation because it lasts "multiple days" (in fact if you workout / use it a lot it often won't survive 2 days) but because it lasts ONE day, all 24 hours, almost without exception. The Series watches do not. They last a day in the sense of 18 or so hours but if you forget to charge at night it will often be dead by morning the next day etc. Improving battery life to make it so even the Series watches never present a concern for surviving a full 24 hours even with a good amount of GPS or cellular use should be a big priority... competing watches (with downsides I admit) from companies like Garmin have managed to between 3 and in some cases 14 days!!! of battery life even with AMOLED screens like the Apple Watch.
And there it is. No. The watch doesn't need more battery life just because you can't be responsible enough to charge at night.

At most, the watch needs efficiency improvements so that heavy tasks like workouts don't use as much power. That comes from using a newer and better performing chip...like the article says.

Wonder if we'll ever see what S7** was rumored to be

or if scrapped / was never real in first place
This was definitely them getting their wires crossed with the Ultra, or they just all got fooled completely by fake leaks. There is no way Apple completely scrapped and redesigned the S7 under two months before launch like the rumors claimed.

Boo that's a shame :(
I'm still rocking the Series 4 and have been waiting out on a new design.

I think the only thing that would sway me would a *much* better battery, not sure we'll see that though..
I just “upgraded” from a Series 4 to a Series 8 because my Series 4s glass broke and it wasn’t worth fixing.

I notice literally zero difference. The larger screen is really hard to notice (completely different from the upgrade from Series 1 to Series 4) and the faster processor is barely noticeable.

The new sensors are beyond useless.

Always on display is mostly annoying and I have turned it off. At least this is a real upgrade for people that like it.

The only thing thing I didn’t know I was missing is the battery life bits that’s mainly cause my Series 4 was down to 71% health.

I would keep the 4 if I were you. I am actually a bit sad about mine because it was a cool feeling to have had it on my wrist every day for almost 5 years 🥲

They need to focus back on design. Make it a bit thinner with a more elegant design. Looks too gadgety. Keep the ultra for the techies.

I'm interested in the Ultra, and I'm not a techie. I just want the extra GPS accuracy, battery life for my long trail runs and the metal lip around the screen. I've trashed the screen on my s6 from rock climbing/bouldering.

I might buy the Ultra 2, as long as they keep the silver option. I don't know, though, this s6 just keeps ticking, and I don't care about having the newest models of anything.

Still very happy with my Apple Watch Series 4. I just got a new battery. Every year, I think the new model will convince me to upgrade, but so far I’ve been unimpressed with the new features.
So many people seem locked into that series 4. I didn’t even find the Apple Watch that compelling until the series 5 came out with the always on display. That was the biggest game changer change the watch has ever gotten

These three years of incremental updates (Series 7 to 9) seem to indicate that next year's Series X will be a big upgrade. I think the 10-year anniversary Apple Watch Series will feature new designs and major new features, pretty much like the iPhone X was a major upgrade compared to the iPhone 6 through 7 era designs. The MacBook Air also got a major redesign in 2018, 10 years after its initial release.

A performance boost is a welcome improvement. Nothing else really need to be improved.

A performance boost? In what way can they boos the performance from the series 8 besides making it go maybe a 1/10th of a second faster? They can't do much with battery outside of very marginal improvements due to the size of the battery they are limited to. Just curious on what a watch that is already blazing fast can improve on performance wise?

My wife has a series 4 which she’s happy about except for the battery life. Was waiting on an updated chip for better performance and the oximeter sensor introduced in series 8. Series 9 should be exactly what she needs.
