who cares what cheap usb cable logitech ships it with, I can use any cable from anyone.

Apple has a design requirement to not use PVC. maybe you don't care about using PVC. Apple does. so that's why it's on the bottom. that way users don't need to worry about which cable to bring. they just bring the ubiquitous lightning cable.

Apple's bonehead decisions are some of the funniest in the tech industry. The charging port on the bottom is easily one of the dumbest in all of tech history.... but when it's the company that's worth more than 3 trillion effing dollars, you have to stand in AWE at how stupid everyone involved was on the apple mouse to not see the obvious problem.
it would be dumber to put the charge port on the front which would destroy lightning cables even faster because the cables don't use durable but toxic PVC material. and how would that be better than just taking along AA batteries for the first gen mouse?

apple designers know better.

ELI5: why would Apple’s cable material choice dictate the charging port location be on the bottom?

I would be absolutely shocked if Apple moves the port on the Magic Mouse.

Am I in the minority that I much prefer a trackpad with Mac OS? Windows a mouse is a must, but I love the Mac trackpad.

Windows and Mac are kind of opposites on this. Mouse has its uses on Mac but it’s made for the trackpad and Apple makes the best one there is.

Windows is ok with touchpad but was never really designed for it at the core like MacOS is, but mice work better there and are more widely supported.

Coming from Windows I’ve always found mice to feel weird on the Mac, but the trackpad is one of the main reasons I never looked back. It was like a revelation.

I bet $100 that this will happen:

  • New Magic Mouse: everything the same, still charge from the bottom, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Keyboard: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Trackpad: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
What do I care about my assumptions? I think it’s fine. I charge my Magic Mouse like once every two months, I couldn’t care less since charging takes like an hour.
Still though, I use my Lightning touchpad wired because it just works better. I want the mouse to be a wired mouse except when I want it wireless.

If they really properly fix it, all three of these are an instant buy for me. Maybe not the trackpad actually since my current one is fine. But if it’s vastly improved that one is becoming the backup.

I thought I did already?

I established that ubiquitous nature of Apple's official lightning cable benefits the user since they're everywhere, so it's just as or even more available than AA batteries.

However, the cable does not use what everyone else uses: PVC. Apple's use of non-PVC materials = less durable, but better for health/environment.

For devices that won't move while charging (iPhone/Keyboard/Trackpad), it's fine to have a port that sticks out because it generally won't move.

For device that could possibly move while charging, Apple doesn't want the user to move the device while it's charging or else it'll damage the cable. So they put the port where the user is forced to not use the device while it's charging. They added quick charge so it's still better than swapping out AA batteries.

Imagine having one of the largest and most talented engineered in the world just to release the same products with a change of port to usbc. Just image that… Steve would flip!

Imaging having one of the largest and, well, most largest mult-national governments in the world force the release of whole new product lines just to change the port to USB-C. In the name of reducing waste, no less. Imagine that...

All of these devices should pair with more than one other devices, especially at their price points (Apple's always been a ripoff). Logitech MX Keys keyboard lets u pair between 3 different devices and switch between all with ONE keystroke (F1, F2 and F3).... tbh, that's the better keyboard anyway so nobody should be buying Apple's own keyboard.
And they are backlit with usb c.

The plug at the bottom renders the mouse useless until it charges. It has been one of my pet peeves about the magic mouse since day one. Please fix it.

Au contrarie, mon fraire, that makes these devices ALL NEW, with the FASTEST, MOST VERSATILE port Apple has ever released in a peripheral device. The pipeline is STRONGER THAN EVER!
Au contraire mon frère. I mean, props for trying some French I guess, but…

And I’m in the “yes the usb port positioning was fairly stupid but omg please don’t mess with this mouse apart from possibly moving the port because it‘s ergonomically the best design in the world” camp.

Why are people so incredibly obsessed with the way the Magic Mouse charges? "Why is the port on the bottom it's so stupid", "we need wireless charging".

First of all. Most designers with good taste understand why the charging port is on the bottom. This is a product that needs like 3 charges per year of just a couple of minutes. Why in the world would the charging port be put where you can see it? It would look awful.

Second, wireless charging would imo make it uselessly more expensive.

I have full confidence they will keep the charging port on the bottom. Because I know Apple has taste.
With such low power needs it could likely have passive solar charging and just always be charged. Seems like a small solar square could be added tastefully.

Been using the Magic Mouse now for about a month. Simply because iPadOS makes every other mouse scroll really weird.
The trackpad and gesture features are amazing. The charge port at the bottom is not an issue at all.

Complaints
- Biggest IMO: Is that it is not very precise.
- Ergonomic wise, it’s terrible. But I’m a claw type of user, so it‘s not too terrible for me personally.
- Clicking requires a lot more force than a normal mouse.

Anyway, I’ve ordered this thing from Temu, and as Tim would say; I can’t wait for me to try it out.

Nine years later, it finally dawned on Apple that the charging port was in the wrong spot.

Oh wait, nevermind, they're just swapping it for USB-C.
I will never for the life of me understand why everyone cares so much about this. It's stupid.

EDIT: to be clear, I'm talking about the location of the charging port.
