Well, if it's DOA you can still return it and buy a new one. You just can't "exchange" without losing your ability to purchase AppleCare+ for some reason.

I completely agree that the policy makes no sense and I wondered if the in-store employee was wrong. That's why I asked online Customer Support if it was true.
We’ll given a couple of people have said they’ve been able to purchase it on a replacement iPad I’d suggest the employee and CS are both wrong.

Every 12.9” iPad owned has been swapped at least once after the first year. Apple Care is worth it and better that it’s a subscription now.

Maybe, but it's also possible there was a recent policy change. Either way, I'm more inclined to believe two company representatives contacted within the last 48 hours than random people on the internet who may have accomplished this who knows when.

I think either way I'm just going to return my device and order a new one. I can't do an exchange because the iPad Pro isn't in stock anywhere.

The replacement was shipped 27th May for delivery on 28th. AC+ was bought on the replacement on 28th so proof it can be done

if you aren't exchanging for a brand new product, than maybe? If you are, than my understanding is that the applecare+ purchase option exists in settings for brand new activated apps. Hard for me to believe that they are smart enough to know hwat's an exchange vs a brand new purchase considering many purchases comes from outside of apple.com.

If you are exchanging it for a refurb device? Maybe.

Very interesting. Can I ask, did you setup the replacement through Customer Service online? Did they require you send back the previous device before mailing the replacement? That's another aspect they told me, which I wasn't thrilled about.

Yh it was sorted out by a CS manager as an advance replacement. Meaning they shipped a brand new one out before I had to return the original. The original is still sat on the table waiting to be collected to be returned back to Apple but obviously it was bank holiday weekend in UK so delayed the return.

My iPad is a portable device to go out and about with, and around the house and yard, it moves a lot. It also is new tech with the M1 processor and in the case of the 12.9” screen tech. So AC+ covers accidents, and makes hardware problems just easier to deal with. Example: I had issues with my old iPP 10.5” and didn't have AC - white spot, and touch issues - and it was a month past the standard 1-year guarantee (thought I could get away with the cost savings ). When I took it in to show these problems, the service rep. said that if I had AC it wouldn't be a problem, they would just give me a new unit, but it was a problem because APPLE didn't officially acknowledge the spot problem even if they can see it!, or the obvious touch problems this model has (they did give me a new unit for the touch issue which was demonstrated as a ‘one time favour’, and because of Coronavirus and the APPLE Store being close I hadn’t been able to take it in). Just a hassle. So, for the $100+ for my new iPad Pro ($50+ less than the 12.9”) it's definitely worth it for peace of mind. And, I can extend it another year with monthly payments after the 2-years which is great since it will probably still be with me. AC+ I think of as just part of the cost of doing ‘business’ with an iPad purchase.
