Man are they slow to do any updates ….
And then when they finally come, they are underwhelming

Apple seems to just do the bare minimum to keep the gravy train rolling down the tracks.

The company has grown to nearly a 3 trillion dollar value under his watch but he's a failure in your eyes. Says a lot about someone, not him though.

These things are great but it just shows you what a great tablet the iPad mini 6 is already.... if you can find a great deal... go for it as it has years left in it yet...

The mini has always been my go to tablet for media consumption... it's easier to hold for long periods, especially when using it for reading books.... it stows away super easy and it is a relatively powerful device given its size... plus it has loads of functionality (including flash light and camera)

For me as an iPad Mini 6 owner...

An upgrade to A16 would be underwhelming. A15 is pretty fast. A marginal increase wouldn't be worth it.
Jelly scroll doesn't bother me at the moment, so removing it is of no benefit to me.
Camera upgrade - meh, it's an iPad. Other than putting the selfie camera on the long side for Zoom calls, I don't see a need to improve the cameras.
Colours? I couldn't care less. It will be going in a case.

On the basis of those rumours, unless it also has more RAM and at least 128gigs storage at base level, I can't see myself upgrading to the 7.
The mini 6 is already a really competent little tablet, nothing else on the market comes close. iPad batteries usually last way longer than iPhone batteries in terms of longevity (Apple stat around 1000 charge cycles, on par with MacBooks) so you could easily get 6 to 7 years on a mini 6 before needing to upgrade.

But I do ever so like shiny new stuff!

I'm relieved to read the next gen ipad mini isn't expected to get an OLED display. I hope it means the price increase for the new device will be manageable.

Basically I want to not need an iPhone, let me pair an Apple Watch with an iPad mini...

Also, give the new iPad mini an M-series SoC, and allow the iPad mini to use Stage Manager & a second discrete screen when docked...

I think the A18 is more likely for the seventh generation iPad mini. It wouldn’t be worth it to upgrade to the A16. Because the node process used for the A17 Pro will be discontinued once production of the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max ends, that processor will no longer be available. The A18 will also allow console gaming like we currently have for the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

Some of these rumors suggest that there aren’t very many believable leaks coming out about the Mini 7.

I don’t believe for a single second that it’ll have an A16 chip. Not a chance. The Mini 6 came out in 2021 with a 2021 chip. Are we really supposed to fall for this misinformation about the 2024 Mini receiving a 2022 chip?

I remember the rumors about the Mini 5 were that it would get an A10. Well, guess what? It got the A12 instead. Find stronger sources if you’re going to produce a checklist of rumored specs about a product please. Or just leave the chip section blank until rumors are stronger.

I‘m amused MacRumors added that the A17 (which will only be used in the current iPhone 15 Pro models) or the M chip (which is too big for a Mini) are also a possibility. No, the A18 is the biggest possibility and it’s not even mentioned here.

I’d even go out on a limb and speculate that the Mini 7 will get 8 GB of RAM. I could easily be wrong, and it gets 6 GB RAM instead, but if Apple wants their latest mobile devices to be gaming powerhouses (like the iPhone 15 Pros), it would be smart to include a good amount of RAM.

A18 and 8 GB RAM might persuade me to upgrade my Mini 6, but more importantly, it could attract customers currently on lower tier/older iPads to upgrade, if they want to use it for more advanced gaming. Other than that, the current Mini is perfectly capable of doing most of what the next Mini will offer, most likely.

The 11th gen iPad will likely get the A16, btw, and Apple doesn’t give the base iPad and the newest Mini the same chip. Since the Mini doesn’t get annual upgrades, Apple keeps the specs more up-to-date with each new release.

A foldable iPad (or phone) is a problem waiting to happen, IMO, but hopefully Apple will wait until the tech is ready. I’m not fond of the current foldable phones. The screens don’t hold up well so far. My work phone is a foldable, and the screen looks like crap after a couple years, and makes a crinkly noise whenever I fold it.

I look forward to stronger Mini rumors surfacing throughout the year.

A18 in early months might be reserved for Pro iPhone models - they usually have a chip shortage especially during a process shrink.

Don’t you think the A17 pro might live on in the regular iPhone 16? That’s the sequencing that’s started with the 14 over the 13.

Unless apple produce a (non pro) A17 cpu on the smaller process node and with a compromise number of graphics cores to keep yield high you might logically expect apple to keep it in production for a number of years as the regular iPhone 16 goes down the range.

If Apple keep the mini as an Air type product, with middling specs to keep it under the Pro then there would be no surprise with USB-C, IPS and jelly scrolling in one form or another.

Rotate the display controller to reduce jelly and throw in an A17 if launched before the next iPhone refresh i would say.

But my theory is that iPad Pro goes up market and they need something as an entry level product under the pro line which is going to get slightly bigger screens. Give more pro features to the mini and justify price increase to become new baseline pro.

It would become a more portable premium iPad. Maybe something to go gaming with which isn’t an expensive iPhone? Or something that could be taken out as a camera or editing that’s not as bulky as other iPads yet not as tiny as an iPhone?

What if we see one with the dual camera rig that is rumoured for iPhones later in the year? As with LIDAR it might be there to give developers a chance to try out 3D video for Vision Pro…

The Regular iPad and air already match the 11” for size just about so what uniqueness would an under spec mini give aside from awkward pricing?

I agree with your post overall, but will add a slightly different tack: The current rumors make much more sense if Apple also releases a Mini Pro with specs closer to what you are describing. I could see a marginal spec bump for the regular Mini and a larger leap for a Pro model, with the higher price point included. They use that tactic up and down their other product lines.

So, maybe we’re missing some Mini Pro rumors. This is probably just wishful thinking on my part, but one can dream.

Take my money! I bought a 64GB wifi-only mini 6, and I love it - except not enough storage and no cellular communications 🤣

But it's so close to the mini 7 release, it's not worth trading on a properly-equipped 6.

Great article! Lots of good hints about both the upcoming mini 7 and beyond. And I appreciated how the author made it very clear these were all rumors and speculation. I know one should expect that on a rumor site, but it seems a lot of people forget about that and argue about a device before it's released.
100%! They’d been slipping on this recently, so it’s nice to see they’ve listened to feedback and adjusted their writing.

The current iPad mini (sixth generation) got the same A15 as the iPhone 13 in 2021. They were both released at the same time (September 2021). So it’s quite possible that the seventh generation iPad mini will get the same “regular” A18 as the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus while the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will get the A18 Pro.

Apple really hasn't given me a reason to upgrade beyond my 2017 iPad Pro 2nd gen 10.5". For what I use it for, occasionally looking something up while watching tv if my phone isnt nearby, or to watch a ball game while in the back yard, iPad OS is still a limiting factor for me, on of the bigger ones is not being able to use a browser engine other than Safari and not being able to use a proper adblocker.

I'm guessing that Apple will probably discontinue OS updates for it this year, so maybe I will upgrade to a refurbished unit from a few years ago.

Really looking forward to this. As a pilot, my iPad mini 5 is with me on every flight - holding all the charts and approach plates. The mini is the only iPad that mounts cleanly on the aircraft yoke.
